Jimmy stood at the kitchen counter with a cup of black coffee already in his hand when the others started moving around the house.Jax came in first, gave a short nod, and poured his own cup. Lily-Rose followed a few minutes later, hair still damp from a quick shower. They moved around each other without trouble. No one brought up the night before. No one pushed anything.Breakfast was plain. Eggs, toast, leftover bacon. They ate without much talking. When the plates were cleared Jimmy leaned back in his chair.“I’m heading out to the north pasture after this. Fence posts need checking.”Jax looked up.“Want a hand?”“If you’re free.”“I am.”Lily-Rose glanced between them.“I’ll handle the feed orders and the calls. Should be quiet here.”Jimmy nodded. He finished his coffee and stood. Jax did the same. They headed out together. The screen door slapped shut behind them.Lily-Rose stood at the sink for a while after they left. She watched the two men walk toward the truck through the

Jax was already in the barn when Jimmy’s truck pulled out of the yard.He heard the engine fade down the road and kept working. Tools laid out on the bench. Socket in one hand. The morning air still cool enough that dust hung in the light from the high windows. He wasn’t thinking about the fence. He kept seeing Jimmy’s face from the talk at the table. The tight jaw. The way Jimmy had looked at him while laying down the new rules. Measuring. Deciding how much trust was left.Jax set the socket down harder than he meant to.He had never wanted to be the reason Jimmy felt small. That was the opposite of why he stayed. He liked what the three of them had. The heat. The honesty. But he had watched the jealousy build, and he had seen how the ropes and Tara pushed everything the wrong way.Part of him wanted to walk back into the house and ask straight out when they were going to try again. The bigger part knew that would only add weight. Jimmy needed the waiting to feel like his own choice.

The house was dark except for the kitchen light.Jimmy stood at the sink washing the last plate. Lily-Rose leaned against the counter beside him. Jax had gone to the spare room twenty minutes earlier. The quiet felt heavier than usual.Jimmy shut off the water and dried his hands.“I’ve been thinking about what I said on the porch.”Lily-Rose waited. He turned to face her.“I’m ready for one step. Not the full thing. Not like before. Just enough to see if the rules hold.”Her eyes stayed on his.“What does that look like?”“He comes in. He touches you. I watch. No comparing. No scores. If it starts feeling like a contest, we stop. Out loud. Right then.”Lily-Rose stepped closer.“And after?”“After, you’re mine. Fully. No leftover questions.”She nodded once.“Okay.”Jimmy walked down the hall and knocked on the spare room door. Jax opened it, shirt off, looking half-asleep.“You still in?” Jimmy asked.Jax met his eyes.“Yeah.”“Then come on. One step. My rules.”They went back to th

The dust hung in the air long after the truck was gone.Jimmy stood with his boots planted in the gravel. His shoulders were still set hard. The grease rag lay where it had fallen. He didn’t pick it up.Jax stayed a few steps away, arms loose at his sides, watching the empty road.Lily-Rose folded the dish towel once, tight, and kept it in her hand.Nobody spoke right away.Jimmy broke the quiet first.“How long were you with her?”Jax didn’t look away from the road.“On and off. Two years. Club life. It was rough. She liked it that way. I left when I got tired of the fighting and the rest of it. She didn’t take it well.”“She still wants you.”“Yeah.”Jimmy’s jaw worked once.“And she thinks this place is soft. That we’re soft.”Jax finally turned to face him.“She’s wrong. But she’s not the type to hear that. Kara takes what she wants or she tries to burn it down.”Lily-Rose stepped closer to Jimmy. Her voice stayed even.“She’s not taking you. And she’s not burning anything here.”

Jimmy checked the front gate twice before breakfast. The metal was cold under his palm. He tested each lock. Listened. The road stayed empty. No engine. No dust. He kept his hand on the top rail longer than he needed to, then turned and walked back to the house.Inside, Lily-Rose had coffee ready. Jax sat at the table, phone face-down beside his cup. Jimmy poured his own and stayed on his feet.“Anything new?”Jax slid the phone across the wood.“Came in an hour ago.”Jimmy picked it up. Read it once. His thumb pressed hard against the side of the phone until the plastic creaked. He set it down harder than he meant to.Lily-Rose read over his shoulder. Her fingers found the edge of the table and held on.Jax leaned back.“She’s poking.”Jimmy’s jaw worked once.“She’s not patient. She’s measuring.”Lily-Rose’s voice stayed even.“She’s trying to get under both of you.”Jax nodded.“It’s working a little.”Jimmy looked at him.“You still not answering?”“Blocked the number last night.”
