No RestMorning light came thin through the front glass.Jimmy was still standing there. His palms pressed hard against the cool surface. The glass felt smooth and cold under his skin. His shoulders sat high and locked. A tight band pulled across his chest with every breath. The small cuts on his hands stung sharp in the cool air.He pushed off the sill. The floorboards felt rough and cool under his bare feet. Each step scraped against the dry wood. He moved to the kitchen slow. Made coffee with stiff fingers. The ceramic cup warmed his palms when he poured. Hot liquid kissed the side of his hand and left a quick burn. He drank it black standing at the counter. The heat sank into his skin but did nothing for the cold that still clung to his ankles and the back of his neck.Lily-Rose came in and stopped when she saw his face.“You didn’t sleep.”“No.”She looked him over.“You stayed up all night.”Jimmy did not answer. He kept the cup between his palms. The heat pressed steady against

Jax finished his water and left the kitchen without another word.Boots moved down the hall. The spare room door shut.Lily-Rose stayed at the sink. She did not turn around.“You’re wearing yourself down to nothing.”Jimmy stood by the table. His hands hung at his sides.“I know what I’m doing.”“Do you?” She shut the water off and faced him. Dirt still marked her arms from the garden. “Because from where I’m standing it looks like you’re holding so tight you’re about to crack.”He stepped closer. The space between them shrank fast.“I told you. I’d rather break myself than watch it slip.”“And I’m telling you the slipping is already happening. Just not the way you think.”Jimmy’s eyes stayed hard on hers.“Come here.”“No. Talk to me first.”He closed the last step and took her by the waist. His grip was firm, fingers pressing into the soft flesh above her hips.“I’ve been talking for days. Now I need something solid.”Lily-Rose’s breath caught. She pushed at his chest once, not hard

The morning after the marks felt different under the skin.Lily-Rose moved through the kitchen with careful space around her. She poured coffee, set a cup near Jimmy without letting their fingers meet, and took her own to the far side of the counter. She did not lean into him. She did not rest against him the way she used to without thinking.Jimmy noticed. The absence landed harder than any argument.Jax finished his coffee, said he was taking the south line, and left with the same exact report he always gave now. The door shut behind him. The two of them were alone.Lily-Rose rinsed her cup. Water ran over her hands.“I’m going to the far garden rows today. They need weeding.”Jimmy watched her face.“You usually ask me to help with those.”“I can manage.”She dried her hands, picked up the basket, and walked out. No kiss on the cheek. No brush of her shoulder against his. Just the soft sound of the screen door and then her boots on the porch.Jimmy stood at the counter for a long t

Jimmy lay awake a long time. The sheet between him and Lily-Rose felt cool and smooth against his arm. He could sense the warm shape of her body a short way off, but nothing more. Her breathing stayed steady and slow. She faced the wall. She had not turned toward him.His body stayed stiff. Every time he moved, the small cuts on his hands rubbed the cloth and stung. He opened and closed his fingers once, then left them still. The mattress under him felt firm and slightly cool where his skin touched it.He listened. The spare room gave no sound. No one walked the hall. Only her slow breaths and a faint tick somewhere in the walls filled the room. A light breeze moved past the window and carried the dry smell of grass and dust into the bedroom. He rolled onto his back. The ceiling was pure black. He counted slow seconds and felt the same hard pull along the side of his neck that had lived there for days. One hand rested on his stomach. The skin there felt warm under his palm. He wanted

The wire jumped and cut him.Blood ran down Jimmy’s arm and mixed with the dust. He pressed his glove over the cut and hissed. His hands had been slow all morning. Too many nights with almost no sleep. The posts stood crooked. The wire ran uneven. Small mistakes kept coming. He held the wound until the blood slowed. Then he wiped it on his jeans and forced the wire back into place. Sweat stung his eyes. The cut burned every time he moved his fingers.Lily-Rose watched from the garden. She set her basket down, walked across the ground, and stopped a few steps away.“You’re bleeding.”“It’s nothing.”“It’s not nothing. You’re half asleep on your feet.”Jimmy kept his eyes on the post. He drove it in harder than it needed. The shock ran up his arms.“I said it’s nothing.”Lily-Rose did not step back.“You’re going to hurt yourself worse if you keep working like this.”He turned. His eyes were red. The cut still leaked under the glove.“I don’t need looking after.”“I’m not looking after
