What Jaxon Said

POV: CallumI didn't ask.I stared at my phone for a while after that last message and then I put it face down on the table and I made a decision.Let it exist in the not-knowing.Because whatever he'd said to Petra, he'd said it honestly. He'd told me that. And honestly from Jaxon Whitfield, given everything I knew about what honestly cost him, was already more than I'd learned to expect from people who had something to protect.'You don't need the answer tonight. You can wait.'I was getting better at waiting.---Tuesday. Film study. The documentary camera was in the corner when we got there. Not intrusive. Petra had clearly briefed her crew on the specific art of making forty thousand dollars worth of equipment look like furniture. The camera operator was still, quiet, angled to catch the room without announcing himself. We both saw it.Neither of us said anything about it.We sat down and opened the tape and started working because that was what we did in this room and the camera

Derek

POV: CallumI pulled over two blocks from the complex.Side street. Quiet. I put the car in park and I stayed in my seat and I listened."I found your profile from the article," Derek said. "Simone Park's piece. I read it twice." A pause. "I've been thinking about calling for a few weeks."'Okay. Okay, just listen.'He talked carefully. The particular careful of someone who'd thought about what they wanted to say before they said it, who'd made decisions about what to include and what to leave out and was now executing those decisions in real time.He was twenty-two. Transferred to a school in the Midwest. Still played football, wide receiver, smaller program, different world than Crestfield. He told me about freshman year.About Jaxon first. And I noticed how he did it, how precise he was about it, the specific care he took to draw a clean line around what Jaxon was and wasn't responsible for."Jaxon was never anything but decent to me," he said. "I want to be clear about that. Whate

It Wasn't Your Fault

POV: JaxonI let him in.Didn't say anything. Just stepped back from the door and let him through and closed it behind him and stood in my own hallway for a second while my face did things I wasn't managing.'Derek Paulson.'The name had landed like something physical. Like pressure behind my sternum. Like something I'd been bracing against for three years without knowing I was bracing.I couldn't manage the couch.I don't know how to explain that exactly. The couch felt like something that required a performance of okay and I wasn't okay and I was done pretending about that tonight of all nights. So I sat on the floor.Cross-legged. Back against the coffee table. Elbows on my knees.Callum sat across from me without question.'Of course he did.'He told me everything. Derek's voice, Derek's words, the careful way Derek had drawn a line around what was Jaxon and what was Richard. The conversation Richard had had with him. The eighteen years old and alone and no armor part.I listened

Asking

POV: CallumNobody had ever asked me like that before.I sat on Jaxon's floor at one in the morning and registered it. The specific shape of what he'd done. Not I want to do this thing. Not I've decided. Not here's what's happening and here's your role in it.I want something that involves you and I'm asking if that's okay.I'd been consulted before. Informed. Occasionally warned. Never asked. Not with that quality of actually waiting for the answer like the answer was going to determine what happened next.'He meant it. He's sitting there and he means it.'I didn't answer him.Not because I didn't have an answer. Because the answer needed to be real when I gave it and giving it at one in the morning on his floor while Derek Paulson's voice was still in my ear and the weight of the evening was still in both of us felt like giving it under conditions that made it hard to trust."Let me think," I said.He nodded. Just that. He didn't ask how long or what I was thinking about or fill the

Other Story

POV: Callum and Jaxon (Alternating)'CALLUM'Petra said it quietly. The way you said things you'd practiced saying. Not rehearsed for performance, practiced for precision, so the person receiving it got the accurate version rather than your reaction to having to deliver it.An anonymous source. A rival outlet. A narrative pitched carefully, surgically, not explicitly naming anything but framing everything. The Whitfield-Reyes dynamic. A distraction. A liability. An internal team controversy that warranted examination.I listened to the whole thing with my hands in my lap and my face neutral.'Garrett. Or Richard. Or someone Richard is paying who isn't Briggs this time.'The language she described was familiar. Careful. The kind of language that lived in the specific territory between implication and allegation, where you could say everything you meant without being held to anything you'd said.I knew that language.I'd been on the receiving end of it since preseason.Petra said: "I ca

Four Hundred Shares

POV: CallumI read it.The whole thing. Start to finish. The engine idling, the lot emptying around us, Jaxon still in park with his hands on the wheel. It was careful.Professionally, surgically careful. The kind of piece that had been reviewed by someone before it went live, not for accuracy but for liability. Every sentence constructed to imply maximum and prove nothing. Every word chosen for what it suggested rather than what it stated.'Sources close to the program.''Questions about team cohesion.''A dynamic that has drawn internal concern.'No names on record. Nobody willing to be attached to a direct quote. Just the architecture of suggestion, the careful framing of the bar photo and the profile piece and the sideline moment from game one, all of it arranged not as a football story but as something else.A distraction narrative.A liability story.'There's that word again.'Distraction appeared four times.I counted.I put my phone face down on my knee. I looked at the windsh

Richard's Call

POV: JaxonI pulled over.Needed to. Couldn't be moving for this.I put the car in park on a side street I didn't recognize, some residential block that didn't matter, and I sat with my father's voice coming through the speakers and my hands in my lap and Callum absolutely still in the passenger seat.'Listen. Don't react. Listen first.'I knew every frequency of Richard Whitfield's voice.I'd been listening to it my whole life across enough different registers that I'd built something like a tuning system for it. The warm-genuine. The warm-performing. The measured-managing. The cold-underneath-warm that he deployed when something hadn't gone the way he'd arranged it to go.Tonight was something I hadn't heard before.Still measured. Still practiced. But underneath it, something careful in a different way. The specific careful of a man who was managing damage he hadn't authorized. Damage that had arrived on his watch without his direct instruction and now required handling. He explain

The Group chat

POV: CallumI saw it over his shoulder.Told you all.Three words from a suspended player who was still somehow in the chat, who'd been building toward this since the first week of preseason, who'd sent a letter under my door and posted a photo in a legacy sub-chat and apparently decided tonight was his victory lap.I took a breath.Took another one.'Don't react from here. Think.'I thought about the notebook under my mattress. Marisol's voice at seven in the morning saying you seem really tired. My mother at two jobs, twelve-hour shifts, coming home in scrubs with her feet hurting, and never, not once, not a single time in my entire life, letting anyone in a room see her flinch.'You are her son. Act like it.'I thought about Marcus from his recovery bed. You deserve something real.I picked up my phone.Opened the group chat.Typed. Didn't think about it. Didn't let my brain get into the construction and the wording and the calibration. Just said the true thing in the plainest lang

The Inquiry

POV: Callum I called at eight sharp. Dr. Vasquez picked up on the second ring and her voice had the particular quality of someone who'd been expecting the call and had prepared for it. Professional. Careful. The specific careful of someone who genuinely didn't want to be delivering what they were about to deliver. I sat in the chair across her desk thirty minutes later. She put the filing on the desk between us. Anonymous. Third party. New documentation, which turned out to be a letter. Submitted apparently during my recruitment period. My father's name on it. Representing a family connection to the university that didn't exist. Suggesting ties to a donor network that had no basis in fact. A letter I'd never seen. A letter I'd never authorized. A letter Daniel Reyes had apparently written out of the particular desperate pride of a man who wanted to believe he'd contributed to something he'd actually had no part in. I sat in the chair and I was very quiet for a moment. 'He did

Elena

POV: JaxonI called from the parking lot.Callum stayed in the car. Didn't ask why I needed to do it outside, just nodded when I said give me a few minutes and stayed there, which was the thing about him I kept encountering and kept not being fully prepared for.She picked up in two rings."Jax.""Hey, Mom. I need to tell you some things.""Okay," she said. Just that. The invitation of someone who had all the time available.I told her everything. The article. The inquiry. The donor review reopened with new documentation filed by an anonymous third party. The timeline. Four to six weeks. The brand associate and the rival outlet and the careful surgical language that had Richard's fingerprints on it even if his name wasn't attached. She listened the whole way through. No interruptions. No small sounds of acknowledgment. Just listening, the real kind, the kind that was actually receiving information rather than waiting for a gap to respond. When I finished she was quiet for exactly one
