The Finished Thing

POV: JaxonHe didn't plan to come here. That's the truth of it and it's worth being precise about because the distinction mattered, at least to him, at least in the specific way that the difference between deciding and arriving mattered when you'd spent your whole life making decisions before you finished understanding what they were.He was in his apartment. Guitar in his lap. The case open on the floor the way he'd been leaving it lately, like closing it required a level of finality he wasn't ready for. He was playing the unfinished thing for the third time that evening, slower than the second time, the way you played something when you were listening for what it still needed rather than what it already had.And then the last line arrived. Not from trying. From the specific quality of not trying, of having put the pen down in his head and stopped circling the thing and just played it, and somewhere in the second chorus the line appeared with the particular completeness of something

Richard In The Kitchen

POV: Jaxon I stood in my doorway for a moment. Just a moment. Long enough to know what I am looking at, the kitchen light on, my father at my table, a coffee cup he'd helped himself to from my cabinet, the printed pages in front of him. Long enough to feel the particular shift that happened in my body whenever Richard occupied a space I'd thought was mine, the tightening that lived somewhere between my shoulders and my jaw and had been there since I was old enough to understand what his presence in a room meant for the room. Then I came inside. I didn't sit down. Standing was a choice. Not dramatic, not performed. Just the practical decision of someone who needed to be able to leave quickly and didn't want to arrange their body into a posture that suggested they were settling in for something. Richard looked at the printed pages in front of him. "Someone sent me the advance copy," he said. "I wanted to see it before it ran." Someone at the athletic department. Someone wit

Marcus Knows Something

POV: JaxonMarcus's voice had the particular loose quality of someone whose pain management prescription had done its job and then kept going a little past the job.Not incoherent. Marcus was too sharp for a prescription to reach incoherent. Just unguarded in the specific way that came when the body was too comfortable to maintain all the usual social filters. The version of Marcus that existed when he wasn't performing being fine."The notebook," he said.I waited."Callum has this composition notebook. Black cover. He keeps it under the edge of his mattress, which I know because I helped him move in sophomore year and I saw where he put it and I've never mentioned it because it's obviously not meant for me." He paused. "I've seen him write in it at two in the morning when he thinks the apartment is asleep. He closes it fast if anyone comes near. Not fast like he's embarrassed. Fast like it's something structural. Like closing it is a reflex he built specifically so nobody would ever

The Profile Publishes

POV: CallumIt went live at six am.I know because I was already awake. I'd set an alarm I didn't need because my body had decided five forty five was the appropriate response to knowing something significant was happening at six and sleep past that point wasn't available regardless of what I told it.I made coffee. I sat at the kitchen table. I opened my phone.Simone Park's piece was at the top of everything.I read it once before I let myself react to it. That was the discipline. Read it completely, let the whole thing exist before you decide what it is, don't start forming opinions in the middle of a sentence and miss the sentence after it.She was good.I'd known she was good from the session, from the quality of her questions and the specific patience of her listening. Reading the piece confirmed it in a different way. The kind of good that made you feel the thing it was describing rather than just understand it, the difference between a map and actually standing somewhere. She

Third Game

POV: Callum and Jaxon (Alternating)'CALLUM'I clocked him before warmups.Second row behind the team bench, center field, the seat that announced itself by its position the way expensive things announced themselves, not loudly but with the particular confidence of something that didn't need to be loud. Richard Whitfield in a jacket that cost more than my monthly rent, sitting with the posture of a man who had been in stadiums his entire life and understood exactly what his presence in one communicated.I identified him the way I identified variables in every room I walked into. Not because he scared me. Because knowing where something was gave you options that not knowing didn't.I filed him. I kept moving.Warmups had the particular electric quality of a home game in October with a ranked opponent and a stadium that had been filling since two hours before kickoff. The crowd noise was already at a level that required raising your voice slightly to be heard at normal conversation dist

Marcus Fenn

POV: JaxonI shook his hand. That was the first performance of the evening and it set the tone for everything that followed. The handshake. The smile. The version of Jaxon Whitfield that existed specifically for rooms like this one, corridors and conference tables and locker room hallways where someone had decided a meeting was happening and the meeting required a particular version of me.I was good at producing that version.'Twenty minutes,' I told myself. 'Just get through twenty minutes.'Marcus Fenn talked the way my father's people always talked. Smoothly. Like the words had been arranged beforehand and the conversation was just the delivery mechanism. He talked about the brand, about their roster of athletes, about vision and alignment and the kind of partnership that lasted beyond a single contract cycle. He used the word legacy four times in the first five minutes, which told me he'd been briefed on what worked with a Whitfield. It worked. It was supposed to work.I listened

The Song

POV: CallumHis apartment. That was where we ended up, which I'd known before he suggested it because the evening had a direction and we were both following it without either of us having to say so out loud. No team. No obligations. The whole evening belonging to something that didn't have a category yet and I'd stopped needing one.He made coffee.Badly.I watched him put too little grounds in and not let it bloom long enough and I waited until he was reaching for the cups before I just. Took over.No comment. No explanation. Just moved him gently out of the way with one hand on his arm and did it right.'He let me.'That small thing. The way he stepped aside without making it a thing. I filed it somewhere. We didn't sit on the couch. I don't know who decided that. It just happened the way things happened between us sometimes, without discussion, both of us arriving at the same conclusion before anyone said anything. The floor. Cross-legged, side by side, backs against the couch. Cof

Morning

POV: JaxonI woke up wrong. Not bad wrong. Just different. The apartment had a vibe to it, it didn't usually have in the morning and it took me three seconds lying in the armchair with my neck at an angle it was going to complain about later before I understood what it was.Someone else was breathing in it.Callum. On the couch. On his side with one arm under his head and his face completely unguarded in the way faces went when the person wearing them had stopped managing everything for a few hours.'How long have I been awake.'Long enough to have noticed the breathing. Long enough to have just. Sat here.'Embarrassing.'We'd talked until three in the morning. That was the thing about last night that kept arriving in pieces, not just the kiss, though the kiss was its own category of thing that I hadn't finished processing, but the three hours after it. The talking. The specific quality of two people who'd been performing around each other for months finally just. Not performing. Abou

Elena Whitfield

POV: JaxonShe picked up on the second ring. She always picked up on the second ring. Not the first, which would've felt desperate, and never the third, which would've felt like she was managing me. Just the second. Like she'd been available the whole time without making it a thing."Jax."Her voice.'There it is.'Something in my chest did what it always did when I heard her voice, which was loosen slightly, the specific release of a tension I carried so consistently I'd stopped feeling it until it wasn't there."Hey, Mom."We talked for forty minutes.I told her about the brand deal first because it was the easiest entry point, the most legible version of what was happening. The meeting in the corridor. Fenn. The morality clause language and what it actually meant underneath the warmth Fenn had wrapped it in. Richard negotiating for months without telling me there was anything to negotiate. She listened. She made the small sounds that meant she was tracking, not performing tracking,

The Documentary Crew

POV: CallumThey arrived at seven fifty.Four of them. A van in the lot, equipment cases, the particular organized efficiency of people who did this for a living and had learned to set up without disrupting whatever they were setting up inside of.I clocked them from the practice field entrance and ran a quick assessment the way I ran assessments of new things in spaces I occupied.Four people. One clearly in charge. Professional. Practiced at making themselves small.'This is going to be interesting.'Petra introduced herself to the team before warmups. Early thirties, calm energy, the kind of person who'd learned to communicate authority without performing it. She said authentic four times in under three minutes, which told me she was either genuinely committed to the concept or had been in enough of these situations to know that authentic was the word that made athletes relax. The team performed being unbothered.I watched that too. There's a specific way people move when they know
