Lila’s grip tightened on the phone. Sonia’s eyes narrowed, her hand resting on Lila’s arm in silent support.“You must have some guts calling me.”Lila said, her voice rising. “Have you no shame? After you helped destroy my marriage? After you stood there and told me Daniel loved you more than he ever loved me?”Sophia let out a sob. “I know. I was wrong. I was selfish. But this baby… if something happens to it, I don’t know if I can live with myself. Please, Lila. You’re the only one who understands what it feels like to want this baby so badly.”The line went quiet except for Sophia’s soft, broken crying. Sonia leaned in closer, whispering, “Hang up. She’s manipulating you.”But Lila couldn’t bring herself to end the call. Not yet. The mention of the baby, the child that might somehow be connected to her DNA tugged at something deep inside her.The thought almost destroyed her. How had she suddenly become a terrible mother before even having a child? She had not called even once to c

Lila turned to the nurse, her voice trembling as she spoke again . “Who was Sophia’s midwife? Did she attend her clinic appointments here at this hospital?”The nurse hesitated, clearly uncomfortable with the line of questioning. “I’m sorry, ma’am, but I can’t disclose that information without proper authorization. Patient privacy laws—”“Please,” Lila interrupted, her voice cracking with desperation. “I was part of the surrogacy arrangement. I need to know. The timeline… it doesn’t add up. I thought the baby was supposed to be much more premature.”The nurse glanced around, then sighed softly. “Look Mrs Coleman, I can tell you that Sophia has been coming to this hospital for prenatal care for the past six months. Her midwife was Dr. Irene Ramirez. She attended most of her appointments here. The pregnancy was listed as natural conception.”The words hit Lila like a punch to the gut. Lila stumbled as she stepped back. Six months, not three months.Nothing had prepared her for this mome

At about 1:am, Lila was now certain that she was completely drunk. She saw an object in double and her eyes were dizzy. She belched and took the last drop of the alcohol, gulping it down. The club house was noisy and the dancers were having fun. But what mattered to Lila was completely different. She hadn't come for fun seeking but to forget her misery and heartbreak. She had come to celebrate her separation from the one man she had truly loved all her life.Lila was on her eighth or maybe ninth cocktail when she noticed a truly devastatingly handsome gent standing by the bar. He was slightly taller than Daniel, handsome in a way that felt immediately wrong. His dark hair was neatly ruffled revealing a sharp jawline that laid beneath beautiful grey eyes. The air around him screamed quiet confidence that made him stand out even in the crowded club. Their eyes met across the room. He smiled slowly, knowing, and undeniably attractive. Unbeknownst to her, he had had his eyes on her for

Lila woke up with a pounding hangover, her head throbbing as if someone was hammering nails into her skull. The bright morning light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows felt like daggers in her eyes. She groaned softly, rolling over in the large, unfamiliar bed, her body deliciously sore in places that reminded her exactly what she had done the night before. The memories came flooding back in fragments —the heated kisses, the intense sex in the shower and on the bed. She had let herself go completely, losing herself in pleasure for the first time in years. She turned her head and saw Alex still asleep beside her, his dark hair tousled, his muscular chest rising and falling with steady breaths. The sheet was draped low on his hips, leaving little to the imagination. For a moment, guilt tried to creep in. She had just filed for divorce yesterday. She was still technically married. But she pushed it away firmly. Gabriel didn’t deserve that. She slipped out of bed quietly, ga

Drew looked surprised by the question but shook his head. “No. I haven’t spoken to her at all since the gala. I can’t even look at her right now. Why?”Lila shook her head, forcing a small smile. “No reason. Just… trying to piece everything together.”“Sophia has been sending me a series of voicemails and messages. She’s been apologizing nonstop — saying she never meant for things to go this far, that she still loves me, that she made a terrible mistake. She’s begging me to forgive her and give her another chance.”Lila’s eyebrows rose. “And what did you say?”“I haven’t replied to any of them,” Drew said, his voice hard. “I can’t. Not after what she did. I told her I needed space, but she keeps sending more. Some of them are about the baby — how she’s scared and doesn’t know what to do without me.”Lila felt a strange mix of emotions. That wasn’t what she saw the other week at the hospital. Sophia didn’t look like a woman who regretted her actions. For what it was worth, she looked e
