Elara's POVWe moved in on a Saturday in March. Not all at once — that was the first thing I had to let go of, the idea that moving would be a single event rather than a series of them. The flat above the bookshop had been mine for eighteen months and had accumulated the specific density of a space where someone had lived rather than just occupied. Every drawer, every shelf, every corner of it held something that had been placed with a specific purpose at a specific moment in a life that had been built piece by piece from almost nothing.Moving it required several trips and the good-humored patience of people who had decided to help without being asked.Caden moved his things in two bags, which was exactly what I expected of him. He had the spare room — the same designation as in the flat but larger, with a window that faced north and a door that gave him the specific autonomy he required and that we had all decided without discussion was the right arrangement.Damian moved his things

Damian's POVThe house settled into itself over six weeks. That was the phrase Caden used settled into itself and it was accurate in the way his observations usually were. The east wall repointing was done in the second week. The kitchen window latch was fixed in the third. The third stair's creak was assessed in the fourth and determined to be structural rather than incidental, which meant it was going to be there for as long as the house was, and Renn had learned it by the end of the first week and now navigated around it with the specific automatic adjustment of someone who had incorporated a variable into their baseline. He was sixteen months old. He had incorporated the third stair.I was forty minutes north of the house for most of each week, at the pack house where the council matters and the administrative work and the daily governance happened. I drove it at seven-fifteen each morning and drove it back in the evening, and the drive had acquired the specific quality of a known

Bret's POVSix months after the tribunal, the pack had settled. The council was reconstituted. Dray had stopped filing procedural objections in March, which I attributed to his having run out of viable ones. Three new members had been brought in to replace Harwell and two others who had stepped back. One of the three was a woman who had been running the pack's eastern territory management for twelve years and who had opinions and the vocabulary to express them. The Keswick line had been quiet since the disclosure motion passed. Quiet in the specific way of parties who were reassessing their strategy rather than accepting defeat. I was tracking several indicators and had three hypotheses about their next approach, which I kept in my notebook and revisited weekly.Damian ran the pack the way he had always run it — directly, with the specific authority of a man who understood that authority was most effective when it was least visible. The difference was not in the running. The differenc

Elara's POVDecember arrived and the house became itself in a new way.The garden went quiet, just wintered, the four trees holding their shapes without leaves, the grass frosted some mornings and soft by afternoon. Renn stood at the garden door in the mornings and looked at this transformation with the focused attention of someone processing a significant update to a familiar system. He had known the garden in spring and summer and autumn. This was new data and he was taking his time with it, conducting his assessments of the frosted grass with the same thoroughness he had brought to the four trees in February. He was twenty-three months old.His birthday was in January.I had been aware of this for all twenty-three months and had been aware of it differently in the past few weeks, the way you became aware of something you had known and were now approaching. Renn at one year was an event I had been moving toward since he had walked four steps on a January morning and said "four" and
