Summer's POVThe morning was a painful quiet. I just couldn’t get the look on Mattias’s face when he answered that phone call out of my mind. It was more than a shock. It was ecstasy. "Somebody's important enough to get him to leave without a word. He forgot breakfast, the one meal he had actually praised in weeks. I silenced the dining table. Mrs. Hambert and Elena had returned to the living room, talking cheerfully, as if nothing had happened that was out of the ordinary. But I was still busy and alone. Around noon, the mansion heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. I wiped my hands on my apron and rushed to the door. 'Mattias is home,' I grinned and whispered. Maybe he'd been called away on business. Maybe I was doing too much. I opened the front door. Slowly, my smile died. Mattias climbed out of the driver’s seat.
