Anastasia's POV “Did you hear? Her dad was executed.” Someone said as I passed a group of students staring at me.“Well, serves the traitor right.” Another answered among them.I kept my head down trying to block out the voices. Sarah and Amy, my only friends, stuck close to me.“Back off bitch,” Sarah sneered at one of them but it only earned us a louder laughter.“Just ignore them, Ana,” Sarah looked defeated. “They don’t know anything.”“Yeah, they’re just being jerks,” Amy added, her tone more aggressive than Sarah’s.I nodded, but my throat felt tight, and my eyes stung with tears that never seemed to fall. Not even when Dad was executed a month ago. This had been my life now. People mocking me when I passed by. The old me wouldn't have stood for it. But this me couldn't even bring myself to do anything. If the rumors were right, then Dad had betrayed the pack and was executed publicly as a traitor. I wasn't sure if it was true or not, but all I wanted to do was be away fro

Anastasia's POV For a second, I just stood there. My cheek burned. She actually slapped me.I was trying to process what had happened when she laughed.“That'll teach you to know your place,” she said, turning to leave.Something inside me snapped.I reached out, grabbed a fistful of her hair, and yanked her back. She barely had time to react before I slammed her against the nearest locker. The metal rattled from the impact.“You should've kept your hands to yourself,” I said as I slapped her across the face. She gasped, stumbling sideways.I stepped toward her, my anger boiling over. But before I could do anything else, her friends rushed in.“Get off her!”Hands grabbed my arms and pulled me away. At the same time, two girls dragged her in the opposite direction.I struggled against them, yelling, “Let me go!”But they didn't.One of them shoved me, and another struck me across the shoulder. Then another hit me.“Stop!”I tried to cover my face as the girls crowded around me, hitt

Anastasia's POVI froze, shocked.I looked up and found a girl standing a few feet away. She had soft features and a pair of striking eyes that somehow made it difficult for me to be annoyed at her.I wiped my cheeks.“Sure.”She sat beside me. “Hi. I'm Uriel. You're new, right?”I nodded. “Anastasia.”“Nice to meet you.”“Yeah. You too.”She studied me for a moment before smiling. “I'm guessing you're currently experiencing phase one of the newbie adventure.”I frowned. “What?”“Maisie.”I stared at her.She shrugged. “Everyone gets introduced to her eventually.”Despite myself, I let out a small laugh.“Is that actually a thing?”“Absolutely.” She leaned closer. “She's mean, everyone knows she's mean, and yet somehow nobody has managed to get her expelled.”I wiped another tear from my cheek.“That isn't why I'm crying.”Uriel's expression softened. “I figured.”I hesitated before giving her a small smile. “I'm Anastasia, by the way.”“You already told me.”“Oh.”She laughed. “It's

Anastasia’s POV The nurse cleaned me up as best as she could. Most of the ants were gone now, but my skin still burned badly from the bites. My arms were red and swollen in some places, and my scalp still itched no matter how many times I scratched at it. “It’ll calm down after a while,” the nurse assured me softly while rubbing ointment over one of the bites on my arm. “But try not to scratch too much.” she added, and I nodded weakly. Uriel stayed beside me the entire time, her face was blazing with anger. Sometimes, she muttered something under her breath about Maisie that I couldn’t quite catch. Honestly, I appreciated it… at least someone was angry with me. “Alright,” the nurse finally said after placing a few bandages over the worst spots. “You should be okay now.” “Thank you,” I murmured with a small smile that came out as a grimace. She gave me a sympathetic smile before walking back to her desk. I stared down at my hands, embarrassment still burning through me. Every

Anastasia’s POV The next day at school felt strangely normal especially after the bad days I have been having. There were just little whispers which were fairly manageable. I sat through my classes quietly, trying my best to focus on literally anything besides my life falling apart. Uriel stayed close to me the entire day, almost like she was scared leaving me alone for even a second would somehow summon Maisie from hell itself. “You’re staring into space again,” Uriel whispered during history class. I blinked and looked at her. “Hm?” “You’ve been zoning out for like ten minutes.” I sighed and leaned against my chair. “Sorry.” “Are you thinking about your dad again?” The question made my chest constrict a bit. “Yeah,” I admitted helplessly. Uriel gave me a sympathetic look but thankfully didn’t push further. Instead, she nudged my shoulder lightly. “Try surviving today first before becoming a detective.” A small laugh escaped me. “I’m serious,” she continued dramatically.
