The sound of his voice through the thick wooden door sent a violent shockwave straight through my chest.Max.How had he found me? Rochelle swore she hadn't told a soul. This cottage belonged to my late grandmother, registered under a forgotten maiden name that Jeffrey didn't even know existed. Yet here he was, standing on the creaky wooden porch in the middle of a dark, rain-drenched forest two hours away from the city.I held the heavy brass fireplace poker tightly in my hand, my knuckles turning white. "Go away, Max," I called out, forcing my voice to sound cold and unyielding. "Go back to Alice and your mother. You got what you wanted.""Leslie, please!" Max pleaded, slamming his palm against the door. The sheer desperation in his tone was terrifying—there was no trace of the cold, arrogant billionaire CEO. "Open the door! Let me explain! You don't understand what happened in that study!""I heard everything I needed to hear!" I shouted back, tears burning the backs of my eyes. "I

The cold night air on the balcony felt as if it had instantly turned into sharp ice.I stared at the photograph in Max's trembling hand. The red laser dot was centered perfectly over baby Daisy's chest as she slept peacefully in her white wooden crib back at our coastal estate."No..." I gasped, a horrific, suffocating wave of nausea washing over me so fast my knees buckled. "No, no, no! Daisy! Max, Daisy!"Max caught me before I hit the floor, his broad arm wrapping around my waist like an iron bar, but his face was completely drained of color. His dark grey eyes were wide with a wild, terrifying fury I had never seen before—not even when he was fighting for my life at the docks."Logan!" Max roared, his deep voice slicing through the evening music drifting from the ballroom inside. The balcony door burst open instantly, and Logan stepped out, holding his phone to his ear. "Max, what's wrong—"Max shoved the photograph directly into Logan's chest. "Call the house security team right

The words hit me harder than the storm outside. Arthur was alive. For several seconds, I could not move. My hand remained over my pregnancy bump while Max stood beside me, his face hardening as he stared at Logan."How long ago?" Max asked."Five minutes since the satellite confirmed the jet entered Minnesota airspace," Logan replied. "We lost the signal after that. The aircraft may have landed somewhere already."I looked down at Daisy. She was still smiling at us from my arms, completely unaware that the man who had caused so much pain in our lives was coming back. My stomach tightened."Max," I whispered, "he knows where we live."Max's eyes immediately moved to me. "No." His voice was calm, but I knew that tone. It was the voice he used when he was trying to control something dangerous. "He doesn't know where you are going to be," Max continued. "Because you are not leaving my side."I swallowed hard. "What if he comes for Daisy?"Max stepped closer and placed one hand over my bum

The room was quiet after the camera hit the floor. Max stood between me and the door while Logan inspected the broken device. Rochelle held Daisy close, whispering to her until she stopped crying. I sat on the couch with the medical file resting on my lap. My hands were still shaking. "Leslie," Dr. Harrison said gently, "we need to talk about this." I looked at him. "Tell me everything you know." He sat across from me. "I don't know everything. That's the problem. These records were deliberately hidden." Max came and sat beside me. His hand found mine. "Then we'll uncover the rest." I opened the file again. There were pages about my childhood, hospital visits, blood tests and treatments. Some of the dates were familiar, but the reasons for the appointments were completely different from what I had been told. "My parents knew?" I asked. Dr. Harrison was quiet for a moment. "It appears your father signed several documents." My heart hurt. "Why would he do that to me?" "I don't know." I

The drive back to the estate was completely silent. The heavy rain had returned, beating hard against the black windows of the SUV. Max kept one arm firmly around my shoulders, his thumb softly stroking my arm to calm my shaking nervous system. In my lap, I held the old leather notebook we had found inside the box. I was afraid to open it, yet I knew I couldn't run from what was written inside. When we finally arrived back home, the estate was on maximum security alert. Bright floodlights washed over the gates, and armed guards stood every ten meters along the perimeter walls. Inside, the grand house felt quiet and solemn. Rochelle brought Daisy down to see us as soon as we stepped through the front doors. When I saw my sweet baby girl's bright face, tears filled my eyes again. I reached out and pulled Daisy into my arms, holding her close against my bump.'Is everything alright, ma'am?' Rochelle asked gently, seeing the pale color of my skin.'We found what we were looking for,' I sa
