OLIVIAThe cold stone of the pillar felt like ice against Olivia's back. She stayed hidden in the shadows, watching the man who had destroyed her life.Vulcan looked so... different. The terrifying Alpha who had leveled her home was gone, replaced by a son who leaned in to listen to his mother with genuine care.He almost looked soft. Sweet, even.See? Yara let out a wistful sigh. He's a softie. Imagine how he'd be as a lover.Olivia rolled her eyes so hard it hurt. Get a grip, Yara. He's nice to her because he loves her. I'm just a trophy from a war he won. He'll never look at me like that. Suddenly, Vulcan's head snapped toward the pillar. Olivia's heart nearly stopped. She pulled back instantly, pressing her spine against the cold stone, chest heaving. If he caught her spying, she was dead. Or worse. She didn't wait to find out. She turned and bolted down the hall, slipping back into her room just as the door opened from the other side."Oh, there you are, my lady," Trisha said

OLIVIAThe morning preparation went by without any drama. Paula had been surprisingly quiet, and Trisha had dressed Olivia in practice clothes, fitted black leggings that moved with her body, a sports bra under a loose blue tank top, and sturdy boots that laced up to her ankles. Her hair was pulled back into a tight braid that hung down her back. She looked at herself in the mirror and felt a pang of longing. This was what she was used to. This was who she really was and not the silk-draped princess pretending to be Luna, but a fighter her father had trained.Don't get comfortable, she reminded herself. You can't show them what you can do.She arrived at the training ground just as the sun was climbing higher in the sky. The space was massive. It had an open courtyard surrounded by stone walls, with weapon racks lining one side and sparring circles marked out on the dirt floor.Maeve was already there, stretching in the center of the largest circle. She wore black training gear that

VULCANVulcan was seething. He'd been standing in the emergency room, speaking with the head doctor, when he'd heard Paula's laugh. Light, genuine, completely unguarded. It had stopped him cold. He'd never heard her laugh before. Not once since she'd arrived at the packhouse. And she was laughing with Kieran. He'd moved to the window and watched them with his jaw clenching as Kieran smiled at her, as she smiled back, as they talked like they were old friends. When did they get so close?Dak had growled low in his mind. I don't like it. Get him away from her! I don't trust him.Neither do I, Vulcan thought darkly. And now here she was, standing in his arms, her body pressed against his chest, her auburn eyes wide and startled. He'd caught her without thinking. One second she was falling, and the next his body had moved with alpha speed, pulling her close before she could hit the ground. She steadied herself and pulled back slightly, but as his arm brushed over hers, she winced.Vulcan'

Kieran Kieran walked through the front doors of his mansion and didn't say a word to anyone. The servants nearest the entrance saw him first. They scattered like leaves in the wind, bowing low, pressing themselves against the walls as he passed. Kieran didn't even look at them. His mind was elsewhere, turning over the same thing it had been turning over since he'd left the hospital. The way Vulcan had appeared out of nowhere and caught Paula before she hit the ground, wrapping his arms around her waist protectively. That was the second time. The first had been at the council meeting, when he had looked at her and Vulcan's entire aura had shifted. Kieran had noticed then. But he'd filed it away as a possessive alpha instinct of being territorial nothing more. Now he wasn't so sure. Why would a man like Vulcan care so much about a traitor's daughter? He climbed the stairs slowly, hands clasped behind his back.He was halfway down the upper corridor when he heard quick footsteps beh

OLIVIA"Yes, Alpha." She gave a slow, slightly off-kilter bow from the seated position, her voice completely flat, like she had absolutely no energy left to perform anything more.I thought you were going to say something dramatic? Yara mocked. I might just say it and die. No Ollie, we have a mating ceremony to attend! Yara laughed. Olivia didn't wait to see his expression. She pushed the door open and stepped out. Vulcan followed her shortly. She fell into steps beside him as he led the way to where they'll be having lunch. They walked around the central garden of the pack house till they got to a clearing and in the centre was a beautifully set lunch table under a large well tendered oak tree. Olivia felt an unexplainable sense of warmth as she saw Vulcan's mother setting the table with the maids. She wore a pink apron over a white floral dress and her graying hair was pulled into a tight bun. Almost like a scene in a painting. Olivia drank in everything around her and couldn
