EVANGELINE Walking slowly back to my son's ward with the report folder close to my chest, it felt like the whole world was suddenly starting to look a bit more unbearable after all. My heart felt so light, lighter than it had been in days. "Mrs. Evangeline," he'd said with a smile. "Your son's parameters have stabilized remarkably. His response to the transfusion was excellent and there was no sign of hemolytic reaction or post-procedure complications. If this recovery trend continues, we can expect a full return to baseline function very soon." Those were his exact words, clean and very certain. And thinking about it now, I couldn't help the smile that kept creeping out of my lips every few seconds. I wasn't a doctor and neither did I fully understand the terminologies or medical jargon he'd spoken to me with but I understood what mattered. He was getting better. And that was why for the first time in weeks, I could finally breathe without feeling like there was an invisible wei

EVANGELINE The hallway outside Brent's hospital room was very quiet as it was just the both of us walking down. When he was done talking to my kids, I asked that we take a walk. I wasn't going to let it all slide because he'd given the kids a good laugh. Even though he was gone I could still hear the kids laughing, and I found myself holding onto that sound for a second before forcing my mind to stay focused. I needed to end this now. He was beside me, hands tucked in his pockets while carrying that veneer of calmness and steadiness as if he owned the ground beneath us. And that was one of the things I hated about him, or rather envied him for. He was the kind of person who could make you question everything you believed in, just by standing close to you. When we reached the end of the corridor beside the staircase and in front of the elevator, I stopped and turned towards him. He stopped too, but didn't fully face me. He turned his head slightly towards me, as if expecting we were

EVANGELINE After two days at the hospital, I was starting to get used to the faint antiseptic smell and the smell of coffee too. But when my phone rang and I saw the name of the doctor on my screen, my stomach tightened. He'd told me the day before that he had some information for me regarding Trent and I'd been expecting his call ever since. As you would expect, I'd been very nervous as well, wondering what he was going to say to me about my child. I couldn't stop hoping that it wouldn't be anything bad because the last thing I wanted was going from the frying pan to the fire. I'd had enough. Calls like this rarely brought good news- at least, not for me. "Mrs. Evangeline," his calm voice said on the other end, "could you please come to my office? I'd like to discuss your son’s latest reports." The way he said it was so measured, polite and unreadable that it made my heart skip because I didn't know what to expect from that tone. I grabbed my back, told my kids and the bodygu

EVANGELINE The phone was what woke me up that morning. "Evangeline." Brent’s voice was super deep, like he'd just woken up too. I could hear voices of men talking behind him. "What is it?" I asked before getting off the bed. "Don't you think you should have called at a later time? Isn't this too early?" My voice came out thin and a bit groggy but I felt very okay, having gone to bed early the night before. "There's been an incident," he said. "The sniper we were supposed to question and get information from." He allowed a small pause before he said those words that made the blood beat in my brain. "He's dead." My world narrowed. "Dead?" I felt like someone had pouted freezing water on me. "How?" He paused again before he answered. "The man bit off his tongue." He did not add anything. He did not have too. I could hear the anger in his voice. He was livid and exhausted. I felt sick as I cursed under my breath and walked out of the room, turning on the lights in the hallwa

EVANGELINE The woman nodded slowly before her eyes moved between us. The room was starting to grow very tense and I could feel that shift in the air. The shift from believing every nonsense Mr. Zane wasspewin to svrually believing hin. Now, they were listening. Time to twist the knife. Zane stood, tall and calm, pretending to have control. "Miss Evangeline," he said softly. "I respect your passion but your emotional appeal won't change economics." I looked straight at him. "Oh, I'm not emotional. I'm accurate. Your numbers are emotional. They are based on greed and ego. And the sooner we stop you the better for everyone out there. What you are planning doesn't have them their best intereat at heart. And that is very, very bad." "You don't understand how empires are built," he snapped. I smiled faintly. "Oh yes I do. Empires fall and cities survive." Zane's eyes hardened. "You've always been difficult, havwnt you? You fight everything. Maybe that's why you're still running a mid
