ALPHA BRENTThe phone rang while I was in the waiting room, having been chased out of the room because Carolina didn't want to see me. My head was still heavy from everything that had happened with her and my chest still felt like fire. I wanted to be alone, to be in silence, but my secretary had other plans. I answered the phone with a rough voice. "This can wait." "Alpha, it really can't," he said quickly, almost out of breath. My jaw clenched as a bolt of anger careened up my spine. "I told you-" "It's about the earlier deal with Ms. Evangeline that fell through. I'm sorry for interrupting but I really wanted you to know what it's about." He cut in, saying every word in a breath. The sound of her name felt like a bucket of ice being poured down my spine. My angry, restless wolf stilled instantly and every nerve in my body settled, sharp and alert now. "What problem?" I asked, my tone shifting without me meaning to. My secretary cleared his throat and replied. "They sent us

ALPHA BRENT "Carolina," I called her again, firmer this time as I edged closer towards the edge of her bed, staring down at her. The last thing I wanted to do was allow this to go on for as long as possible. It would only sour our relationship even further and I wasn't going to let that happen. Her chest was heaving and her cheeks were flushed. I forced myself to keep my voice calm as I continued. "I assure you, there's nothing going on between me and Evangeline. I understand that you're angry but you need to hear it. Keeping quiet will only make it look like I'm hiding something from you or that I'm feeling too guilty to admit it. But now you're hearing it from me, there's nothing going on that you have to be worried about." She let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head as she continued. "Nothing going on? What do you take me for? You think I'm a fool? You expect me to believe there's nothing going between the both of you when you ran to her the second she ran away. And not just t

EVANGELINE The red was everywhere I looked. And I could feel it too. It was sticky, warm and soaking through the fabric. My hands shook as I touched it, expecting the pain as the panic struck me. "Oh my God," I gasped, my voice breaking. "I've been shot, I'm bleeding, I'm-" But I was interrupted when the man's voice cut through the panic. He sounded firm and calm despite the hell we'd just witnessed outside. "Stop." His hand caught mine before I could claw at my clothes. "You're fine. It's not your blood." I blinked at him, still shaking like a leaf that had been caught in a wild wind, but my ears rang too loud. I didn't believe him. The conviction was that the blood was literally dropping and soaking into my pants. I felt the hotness below, but there was no sting or severe pain that suggested a bullet had entered me. Despite that, my senses went berserk and I was shouting. "No, it's all over me-" He grabbed the edge of my ruined shirt and squeezed it hard. The blood dripped

EVANGELINEIt wasn't until after our lips touched that I realised what I had done. I panicked, then pushed at his chest, stumbling back and shaking my head as I tried to understand what the fuck I'd just done. "God, I'm such an idiot," I whispered, "I wasn't supposed to do that- I mean, I didn't mean-" Before I could finish, his hands shot up, then in a flash of a second he closed the distance between us and then his mouth was one mine. Hard. Fierce. Hungry. The kiss slammed into me and my thoughts shattered instantly. All the fear, all the anger and all the years of holding myself together seemed to vanish in an instant. I melted. My body betrayed me, pressing into him as my bands cling to his shoulders before wrapping around his neck. My chest heaved against his, as he stole my every breath. His mouth trailed down for the briefest second before claiming me again and this time it was deeper as if he wanted to devour every piece of me I had kept hidden. A whimper escaped my throa

EVANGELINE The phone rang in my hands for a few seconds before I finally took a shaky breath and answered, even though I was so conflicted."Hey," I said quietly, looking up to make sure nobody was around. There was a pause, and then his deep voice came through. "Hey." Just that one word from him hit me harder than it should have. It was low and steady but there was just this thing beneath it, a certain kind of roughness that felt like concern. For a moment none of us said anything. It was awkwardly soothing. I could hear the faint sound of him exhaling and the silence between us only got thicker, thick enough to choke on. He finally shattered the silence when he spoke. "I... I just wanted to hear your voice. I wanted to make sure you're okay." For a moment, I didn't know what to say. Before now, I was always quick to retort and bite back at whatever he said to me, but for some reason my mind went blank and all I could hear was the echo of his voice in my head. It had been a rea
