Kael’s POVThe eastern gates opened just wide enough for the column to pass, then sealed again with a heavy silver bar that rang like a struck blade.I kept Elara at my right side, one hand locked around hers, the bond stretched wide and constant. Lucian walked at my left. The Warden moved two paces ahead, silver runes already glowing along both arms. Twelve of my best silver-marked warriors formed a tight ring around us. Another twenty held the walls and the immediate tree line. The rest of the pack remained inside under strict lockdown orders. Anyone who attempted to leave without authorization would be treated as an enemy. The forest accepted us in silence. No birds. No wind. Only the soft crunch of boots on damp earth and the low, steady hum of the Warden’s preparatory magic. Through the bond I felt Elara’s focus—sharp, controlled, and threaded with the same cold determination that lived under my own skin. The three voices had gone quiet since dawn, but the quiet felt deliberate.

Kael’s POVThe silver dome around the stone circle thinned like mist under a rising sun.I kept Elara locked against my chest, both arms banded around her, the bond stretched so wide I could feel every frantic beat of her heart. Through the fading light I stared at the woman standing just beyond the barrier. She was exact.Same dark hair falling past her shoulders. Same silver eyes that caught the dying ritual glow. Same crescent scar on the inner left wrist, glowing with a soft, steady light that matched Elara’s perfectly. Even the slight tilt of her head was the same. Only the smile was different—older, deeper, and utterly certain. The original vessel.Or what remained of her.Lucian’s voice snapped through the pack link, strained and urgent. “Alpha—perimeter is holding, but whatever that thing is, the corrupted are forming up behind it. They’re not attacking. They’re waiting for her.”I did not take my eyes off the woman. “Warden. Status of the barrier.”“Failing,” he answered, voi

Kael’s POVDawn of the last day arrived gray and airless.I woke before the light fully touched the eastern windows, Elara still curled against my chest, the hairline crack in the lock pulsing between us like a foreign heartbeat that refused to fade. Through the bond I felt her surface from sleep the moment my breathing changed. Neither of us spoke for a long time. There was nothing left to say that the bond did not already carry. One night remained. One ritual. One chance to close the crack before the original vessel, the entity, and the third voice aligned under the full moon and turned the little key for good.I pressed a kiss to the top of Elara’s head, then rose and began dressing in silence. She watched me from the bed, silver-flecked eyes steady, the crescent scar on her wrist already glowing with a faint, anticipatory light. When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet but clear.“The blood-binding. Tell me the truth about the risk.”I fastened the last buckle on my bracer and

Kael’s POVThe original vessel stepped fully into the circle and the air itself changed.Silver-black energy coiled around the identical crescent scar on her wrist like living smoke. The dome the Warden had held shattered into fading sparks. Outside the broken barrier the battle still raged—Lucian’s voice a constant roar of orders and pain through the pack link—but inside the stone circle the only sounds that mattered were Elara’s sharp intake of breath and the wet, wrong pulse of the crack that had just been forced open again.Wider than before.I kept both arms locked around Elara, our bleeding forearms still pressed together, the bond stretched so open that every thought, every spike of fear, every flicker of the three voices poured freely between us. The lock that had closed for one perfect second now gaped like a wound. Through it I felt the entity lunging, the old blood reaching with possessive tenderness, and the third voice simply waiting for the door to finish falling open.T

Elara’s POVThe gates of the pack house closed behind us with a sound that felt final and temporary at the same time.I walked under Kael’s arm, my legs barely steady, the bond between us still stretched wide and raw from everything we had forced through it. The lock was closed. I could feel the difference with every heartbeat—no foreign pulse, no layered voices leaning against the silver door, no cold hand reaching for the center of my chest. Only a deep, scarred silence that felt like the aftermath of a storm that had nearly torn the house down.Lucian limped ahead of us, one arm bound tightly to his side, barking short orders to the surviving warriors. The Warden moved more slowly, runes almost completely dark, supported by two silver-marked wolves who looked nearly as exhausted as he did. Bodies were already being carried in from the eastern path. Too many of them. The scent of blood and silver fire hung heavy in the courtyard.Kael did not release me until we reached the inner me
