JASON’S POVI hadn’t fully processed how completely I’d come to love her until I watched those monitors flatline.I sat now in the quiet aftermath, Ella finally settled into genuine, peaceful sleep after that terrifying crisis, and found myself replaying those endless, devastating seconds over and over, unable to fully release the raw, visceral terror that had gripped me watching Dr. Marsh’s team fight desperately to restart her heart.I had known, in some abstract, careful way, that my feelings for Ella had grown into something considerably more significant than the wary suspicion of our earliest weeks together. I had told her I loved her, had meant it fully in the moment, had built an entire future around that genuine, hard-won affection. But sitting there watching her chest fail to rise, watching the monitors display nothing but flat, terrifying silence, I understood the actual depth of that love with a clarity that felt considerably more absolute than anything careful, considered

JASON’S POVI left Ella’s bedside that evening with a cold, focused determination that felt considerably different from the raw fury I’d carried immediately after her rescue, something more controlled and strategic settling into place as I processed Vivienne’s difficult update about Cross’s continued elusiveness. He would not simply disappear entirely, I told myself, sitting alone in my study attempting to plot our next steps forward. A man who’d spent thirty years patiently constructing this elaborate scheme wouldn’t abandon it entirely simply because one particular attempt had failed. Whatever he was planning next, I intended to be considerably more prepared for it than we’d managed to be for the wedding day assault.I spent several hours reviewing every scrap of intelligence Aldric’s team had managed to gather, searching for any pattern or clue that might offer insight into wherever Cross had retreated to regroup, though the frustrating reality remained that his careful preparation

JASON’S POVI found myself, in the quiet hours after Ella’s exhausted sleep finally claimed her, sitting with Aldric’s confirmation that her financial breakthrough had indeed connected directly to Cross’s broader network, and processing an admiration considerably more complex than I’d initially anticipated feeling.I had known, in some general way, that Ella possessed genuine business acumen. She’d built an entire successful venture alone, in the human world, with no resources beyond her own determination and skill. But watching her work through that complicated financial documentation with such focused, methodical precision, identifying patterns our own trained analysts had struggled to fully untangle, revealed a depth of capability I hadn’t fully allowed myself to appreciate until confronted with it directly. It unsettled me somewhat, if I was honest with myself, sitting alone in the quiet aftermath of her breakthrough. Not because I doubted her capability, but because I understood,

JASON’S POVI convened an emergency security review within the hour, fury at the containment failure burning hot beneath my careful, controlled exterior as I demanded a full accounting of exactly how Sherwood had managed to escape custody despite what should have been comprehensive security measures.“I want to understand precisely how this happened,” I said, addressing the assembled security personnel with a hardness that left no room for careful diplomatic softening. “Sherwood Hawkson was a documented threat, already proven willing to collaborate with an enemy actively targeting my family. How did he manage to overpower guards during what should have been a routine, carefully monitored transfer?”The security captain responsible for the transfer detail, a normally composed man named Ferris, shifted uncomfortably under my direct scrutiny. “Alpha, the transfer protocol was followed exactly as specified. Sherwood exploited a moment when both assigned guards were simultaneously distract

JASON’S POVI found myself, once Claudia had been settled into a secure guest room under careful supervision, sitting with Ella in a quiet debate that carried considerably more complexity than I’d initially anticipated.“I don’t fully trust her,” I said, keeping my voice low despite our private setting, mindful of how thin these walls might prove given everything else currently threatening us. “I understand her fear seems genuine, but Ella, this is a woman who slept with your husband, who mocked you before you ever arrived at this estate. Her history doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in her reliability.”“I know her history better than anyone,” Ella said, her own expression carrying complicated tension as she worked through the same difficult calculation. “I’m not suggesting we trust her blindly. But Jason, her fear seemed genuine in a way I don’t think she could easily fabricate. And if she actually does possess information about Cross’s operation, however she came to learn it, we c
