CYNTHIA Eduardo arrived on a Tuesday with one bag and no ceremony. This was characteristic of him, she had learned over the months of Portugal and phone calls and his eventual appearance in her city life. He moved through the world with the specific lightness of someone who had long ago decided that things were more important than the impression of things and had arranged his life accordingly. He stood in the entrance of her fourth floor flat with his one bag and looked around with the evaluating eye he applied to spaces the way Petra applied it to structures and Clara applied it to buildings. "Good light," he said. "I know," she said. "It's why I took it." He walked to the window and looked at the courtyard below. "The tree will be better in spring," he said. "I know that too," she said. "I'm waiting." He turned from the window and looked at her with the direct uncomplicated attention that had been the first thing she had noticed about him on Patricia's terrace. Not the atte

SIMON She called on a Wednesday. I had been expecting it since Scarlett had told me about Sunday's conversation. Cynthia was a woman who completed things. She would not leave the conversation half finished. "Simon," she said when I picked up. "Cynthia," I said. "Can we meet?" she said. "Just us. Not at the mansion." "Of course," I said. "Where?" "There's a café near the flat," she said. "Thursday at ten. Eduardo will be at his language class." Eduardo was taking English language classes, apparently, three mornings a week. Cynthia had mentioned it in a text to Scarlett who had mentioned it to me with the specific expression of someone finding something deeply charming. "Thursday at ten," I said. "Good," she said. Then: "Simon." "Yes." "I'm not coming to fight," she said. "I want you to know that before Thursday. I've done my fighting privately and I'm done with it." "Okay," I said. "I just need to finish the conversation," she said. "For myself." "I understand," I said.

DAVID The European merger closed on a Thursday. Twenty-three months of work, four regulatory reviews, one hostile interference campaign from Marcus Reed, one personal scandal that had threatened to derail everything, and one board meeting that had gone precisely as Simon had needed it to go. Twenty-three months. It closed on a Thursday at three forty-seven in the afternoon with the signing of the final documentation in a glass-walled meeting room in the Laurent Industries building while David sat across from Simon and watched him sign his name with the same unhurried precision he brought to every document and felt the specific quiet satisfaction of something large completing itself. Afterward the room cleared and it was just the two of them. Simon looked at the signed documents for a moment. Then he looked at David. "Thank you," he said. "Twenty-three months of work," David said. "You're welcome." "Not just the merger," Simon said. David looked at him. "The year," Simon s

SIMONThe week after the merger closed was the quietest week Laurent Industries had experienced in two years. Not empty. That was the important distinction and I made it consciously on Tuesday morning when I walked through the building and felt the change in it. Empty would have been concerning, the specific hollowness of an organization that had spent its energy reaching a goal and now didn't know what to do with itself. This wasn't that. The work continued with the same volume and the same technical demand it had always had. The operational integration of the new European entities required significant and sustained attention from multiple teams simultaneously. The legal department was deep in the documentation that a deal of this scale inevitably produced, the contracts and compliance requirements and jurisdictional considerations that would occupy them for months. The financial teams were running integration audits. The communications department was managing the external narrative

SCARLETT November moved through the campus like weather. The studios got busier, the energy shifting from the exploratory quality of September and October into something more focused and pressured. Deadlines becoming real. Concepts that had lived comfortably in sketchbooks now having to justify themselves in three dimensions. Petra's textile piece had evolved into something genuinely extraordinary, a series of layered panels that changed character completely depending on how light moved through them, which she had achieved through a construction method she had developed herself over six weeks of trial and iteration and the specific stubbornness of someone who refused to accept that what she could see in her head wasn't achievable with her hands. "It's done," she said on a Tuesday, standing back from the finished panels with the expression of someone who had been in a long argument and had finally won it. I stood beside her and looked at it. "Petra," I said. "I know," she said.
