SCARLETTWe went to dinner after, the four of us, Simon and David and Petra and me, somewhere nearby that Simon had found and booked without announcing it beforehand in the way he arranged things that mattered without making the arrangement into a presentation. A small Italian place two streets from the warehouse, the kind of restaurant that had been there long enough to stop trying to be anything other than what it was, good food and reasonable wine and the kind of warm unhurried lighting that made everyone look like the version of themselves they actually were rather than the version they were performing. We arrived still carrying the particular energy of the warehouse, the specific heightened quality of an evening that had gone well and that everyone present knew had gone well and that nobody was quite ready to put down yet. The maître d' showed us to a corner table, which Simon had clearly requested, the kind of table that allowed a conversation to be its own thing rather than som

SIMONThe house was in a quiet street twenty minutes from the city center, the kind of street that had been residential for long enough that it had stopped being self-conscious about it, the Victorian terraces lining both sides with the comfortable solidity of buildings that had been doing their job for a hundred and fifty years and expected to continue.I had looked at it alone on the Wednesday, between a two o'clock call and a four o'clock meeting, forty-five minutes that I had used to walk through the rooms with the estate agent and form a preliminary view without the pressure of someone else's response shaping mine before I had finished forming it. That was the way I approached most significant decisions, get the unmediated impression first, let it settle, then introduce the other variables. The unmediated impression had been immediate and complete. This was the house.I had known it in the entrance hall, standing on the original tiled floor with the January light coming through t

SCARLETTThe Meridian meeting was on a Wednesday in the last week of March.Their offices were in a converted building in the center of the city, the kind of space that had been designed to feel both serious and creative simultaneously, which it mostly achieved—exposed brick softened by white walls, industrial windows filtering in gray spring light, a lobby that smelled faintly of cedar and fresh paper. I arrived seven minutes early and sat in the reception area with my portfolio and the Threshold documentation and the specific focused calm of someone who had prepared thoroughly and was now trusting the preparation. I had rehearsed nothing. Anand had taught me that rehearsed answers sounded rehearsed, and the work didn't need performance. It needed clarity. The woman from the preview, whose name was Catherine Holt, collected me from reception herself. She was taller than I remembered, dressed in the kind of understated gray that people wear when they've stopped needing to prove anythi

SCARLETTA year after the article.I stood in the Meridian studio in September and thought about that. Not because it required marking specifically but because the mind does that, finds anniversaries without being asked, lays them quietly beside whatever else you're doing until you notice.A year since Thomas Reeves had published his piece and the world had had its nine days of noise and moved on to the next thing, the way the world always did, hungry and indifferent and ultimately merciful in its short attention. The studio was mine for three days a week, the Meridian arrangement, the rest of the time at campus for my second year. Light came in from the north-facing windows Catherine had promised me in that first meeting, even, unglamorous, exactly the kind of light you wanted for real work rather than for looking good in photographs. The second collection was in its early stages, concept work, the sketchbook full of the new direction that had emerged from Threshold almost organicall

SCARLETTSimon proposed on a Sunday morning in November. Not with ceremony exactly. With intention, which was more Simon. He had never been a man for grand orchestrated moments—no restaurant reservations engineered for the occasion, no violin player hired to appear at the right table, no elaborate scavenger hunt through a city full of meaning he'd need to explain afterward. He was a man who understood that the right moment didn't need décor. It only needed to be true.We were in the kitchen. Sunday morning version, reading glasses and newspaper and two cups of coffee going lukewarm on the counter and the specific unhurried quality of a morning that wasn't going anywhere. Outside, November had settled into its grey and steady rhythm, the garden beyond the door stripped down to its bare structure, the fountain still running because Eduardo had insisted the mechanism could handle cold as long as we didn't let it freeze solid, and had shown Simon exactly how to check it. Inside, the kitch
