Hours later, the field was drenched in the enemy blood.I wiped my claws, breathing heavily as we marched back to the pack grounds after dealing with those pesky vermins. The Red Night’s group was slaughtered, but a gut-wrenching sensation remained in my chest the closer we got to the territory. As if something terrible was waiting there.‘Look at the sky,’ Azrael snarled, his tone alarmed.Thick, black clouds of smoke were billowing over the treeline.“What the hell...?” Mateo gasped behind me.We hastily ran through the treeline into the courtyard, and the sight made my eyes widen in appall. The grand manor was engulfed in roaring, uncontrollable flames.“No…” Smoke choked the air as warriors frantically threw buckets of water against a towering inferno. In years of my reign as an Alpha, my Manor never caught fire. And standing right in the center of the courtyard, drenched in dirt, clutching the hem of her stained dress, was Evelise. Looking completely dazed, shaking violently wh

~ EVELISE'S POV:I gripped the cold iron bars desperately, calling out to the guards, but my pleas were simply ignored.“Let me go! I am sorry!”“We apologize, Luna, but we are only following orders.” One of the guards spoke with a downcast gaze before turning away to return to his post.“Please… call Zarius. He’ll listen to me.”Pretending not to hear, they turned their backs on me and walked away, leaving me trapped in the lined-up cells.Darkness and isolation. It wasn't that I feared them—I hated them. They were the two things I resented from the very bottom of my heart, my absolute worst nightmare.“I didn’t mean for this to happen...” Tears began to dwell in the corner as my steps misbalance and I fell on the ground.“I just wanted the letter…”Strangled by his darkness, I no longer had the strength to move, or to call anymore.I curled tighter on the stone floor, my throat throbbing where Zarius’s fingers had left their mark.“I didn’t realize… I didn’t mean for this to hap

By the time I woke up again, he was still where I had locked him, hand over my head, reading a book.“Zarius.”He closed the book without a sound, setting it aside on the nightstand before turning his undivided attention back to me. “How are you feeling now?” he asked softly. “Better…” I trailed off, the ache in my body had soothed, the fever had gone down too.“You were out in the courtyard, near the wolfsbane and the silver boundary, for far too long,” he explained. His index finger idly tracing a path through my hair, pushing a stray lock away from my face. “Zarius.”“Hmmm?” “What happened to the manor?”“What else? It’s under reconstruction.” He let out a long, weary sigh.“I am sorry.”“Your apology and your tears won’t bring back the lives lost,” Zarius enunciated coldly.Forming my lips in a thin line, I looked down. “You carry responsibilities, Evelise, and the burden that your mistakes bring. Make sure you never disregard your duties again.”I swallowed the lump in my thr

~ EVELISE'S POV:“Zarius…”I hated how my voice called the man I least desired. I hated that despite him leaving me in the morning, I was still calling for him at noon.I hated that my eyes searched him.“Zarius!” The residual heat of the fever had finally faded but not the need.Would he come to see me now? During lunch? Or perhaps send someone?None of that happened and my painful optimism was shattered. Pissed off, I decided to complain to that stone-cold bastard directly for leaving behind a strange, empty ache in my chest. ‘I thought we didn’t want him.’ My wolf teased me.“We don’t.” I enunciated with a huff.Lying to both of us.Or maybe waking up to an empty bed only made everything worse. “Lingering effects of the wolfsbane and the mate-bond.” I announced once again, getting out of the bed.“Hmm. That. It turned me soft, needy, and desperate for Zarius’s familiar warmth.”‘I did not ask for an explanation.’ She chuckled, ‘Who are you trying to convince?’A crimson sha

“Stop avoiding me, Evelise.” His lips were against my ears.Zarius pressed his weight forward, securing his knee firmly between my legs and trapping me against the cold wall.“Za–Zarius?” I looked up at him in disbelief. My body abruptly turned numb when my thighs brushed against his knee.Giving me a heat I had never experienced before.“What are you doing?” My cheeks warmed at the sudden contact. “Why not? Isn’t that what you wanted?” He tilted his head slightly, hovering over me. “My closeness?” “Let go of me, Zarius!” “No,” he growled, leaning in until his breath fanned across my cheek. His golden eyes locked onto mine, blazing with frustration. “Don’t stay away from me. Stop ignoring me.”“Move!” I shoved against his chest, but he didn’t budge an inch. I hated how hot my skin melted merely from the heat of his body reaching mine. I hated how my body reacted to his proximity. How my body was already craving more of it. “You don't get to touch me like this.” I hissed th
