All Chapters of Uncharted Destiny : Chapter 41 - Chapter 50

Hannah stood with her back to the ridge and the longhouse like a hinge that had been slowly forced. She wanted Marcus to find her in the dark because he wanted to, not because an elder insisted or a midwife needed steadiness. The desire sat under her ribs, warm and sharp; she could almost taste cedar on it and the echo of the hand that had first claimed her at the mating ball.Below, voices drifted up - linen scraping, someone humming a half-remembered tune - and Marcus moved through them, visible, intentional. She had watched him thread kindness with Cora like a seamstress repairing a garment, and she understood the stitch. But understanding hadn't lessened the ache of being a second hand. She remembered the weight of his thumb over the silver-scar on her wrist, the way it had steadied and stung all at once. It had been a promise then. Now she needed to know what that promise kept.He found her before she planned to find him, appearing at the foot of the ridge with a cloak half-buckl

Hannah counted breaths until the room stopped spinning; the quiet of the longhouse felt less like refuge and more like a court of stillness where she had to deliver a verdict to herself. The overheard words knifed at the place where trust and expectation braided: Marcus admitting the pull to Cora, his clumsy confession of owing steadiness, the neat way he’d tried to balance obligation and desire. Two weeks of proof hung in the air like a promise and a challenge at once. She wanted him close because of the bond, because of the way their names had snapped together at the mating ball when she was eighteen, but the bind alone wasn’t a life. It was a compass that could be ignored if the man it pointed to chose otherwise.Outside, a wind pushed through the eaves, carrying the smell of crushed thyme and smoke. Hannah pressed her palm to the silver-scar on her wrist, the memory of his thumb there still warm beneath skin. The scar was less a tally of pain and more a ledger of truths: they were

Hannah woke to an empty pallet and the heavy smell of cedar still clinging to the blanket where Marcus had slept. Two weeks had been a rubric in her head - pieces counted and weighed - but days slid past in the longhouse like slow-spun wool, each one leaving a faint lint of absence. He’d promised to find her between duties, to bring tea at dawn, to leave council for her when she needed him. The first week she believed him with an ache that made her movements careful; the second week she read silence like a slow burn.Cora’s labor edged closer with a steady insistence everyone could hear. Midwives moved through the longhouse with baskets and soft voices. Men shifted their watches. Marcus’s name was on every low conversation, threaded through in gratitude and expectation, and with each mention Hannah felt the bind between them loosen as if cut by degrees. The cedar scent that had been his signature faded into the ordinary smells of work and wet wool - and with it, the private claim she’

Hannah heard the cry before she crossed the border - raw, threaded with grief and anger, a wolf howl that ripped the thin night into pieces. It hung in the air like a wound and made her stop as if the sound had a hand on her back. The no-man’s land was quiet enough to hold one voice like that; the call traveled and then folded into the dark. Her chest tightened, the old pack-sense answering reflexively, but it was different now - no responsibility to act, only the ache of recognition. She stayed on the ridge until the echo faded, listening to the way the wind carried cedar smoke from a distant hearth. The bind’s splinters still throbbed under her skin where she’d pressed her thumb to the scar, and Marcus’s name rose and fell in her mind like a tide. You’ve got this, she whispered, and let herself believe it for the first thin morning. When the sun lifted, she moved again, boots sinking into thawing earth, the air bright with the metallic tang of frost melting. For the next days she wa

The mornings tasted like woodsmoke and possibility; Hannah woke to them and liked the feeling of starting small. She rose before the household stirred, padded into the yard with bare feet numbed by frost, and let the cold strip the last of the longhouse’s cedar and catalogs of duty from her bones. She wanted - needled, really - to feel the world press back at her in honest ways: the grain of the chopping block, the rough leather of a satchel strap, the refusal of a shovel when the soil was rock-hard. Those things answered without promises. Her mother’s kitchen became a map of new habits. She learned to fold pastry until it gave, to braid loaves that proved more forgiving than the longhouse’s exacting rituals. Hands that had once threaded wool under Marcus’s watchful eye moved with a quiet pride of their own. Hannah’s laughter started to leak into the house, small and surprised, as neighbors stopped by with gossip and jars of preserves. The scar at her wrist still burned sometimes - an
