Kael's POVI stared at the envelope in my hand.AKIRA OWENS.The name was written neatly across the front, followed by three words that made my stomach twist. She knows everything. What the hell was that supposed to mean? I looked around the driveway again, nothing. Whoever had left it was already gone..I stepped back inside and locked the door. Then I locked it again. I stood there for a few seconds, trying to calm my breathing. This was getting too close, too personal. I took the envelope upstairs and dropped it on my desk. I didn't open it immediately. Something told me I shouldn't. But curiosity won. I tore it open.Inside was a single sheet of paper.I unfolded it..My eyes scanned the words. You think you're protecting her. My jaw tightened. I continued reading. But you're only making her a bigger target..I swallowed. Then I reached the last line.Ask her what happened to her mother.I froze. My hand went completely still..What did Milky's mother have to do with any of this?.I re

Akira's POVMy heart stopped. I stared at the picture on my phone. Mom. Sitting in our living room. The picture had clearly been taken through the window. I could see the curtains behind her, the cup in her hand, and the little vase she always kept beside the television. What could she be doing at home by this time, I thought.Someone had been outside our house.Watching her, watching us.“Akira?”Camila's voice sounded distant. I couldn't breathe.“That's my mom.” Camila's face changed immediately. “What?”. “My mom…” I turned the screen toward her..She covered her mouth.“Oh my God. My fingers were trembling. I immediately called Mom. She answered after two rings.“Hello, sweetheart?”“Mom!” She laughed softly. “Why are you shouting?”“Where are you?”“In the living room.” My heart dropped.“Are you alone?”“Yes. Why?”“Lock the doors.”.There was silence.“Akira, what's wrong?”“Please, Mom. Just lock the doors and windows.” I heard her sigh. “Okay.” I waited. A few seconds passed. “

Kael's POVI couldn't sleep. The photograph of Linda was still burned into my mind. You keep looking at the wrong people.Whoever was behind this wanted us to suspect someone.Justin.Linda.Maybe even people who had nothing to do with it, and the worst part? It was working. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone. I opened the photograph again. Linda was standing outside the school building.Alone. Nothing seemed unusual about it, but that was the problem. Why send me a picture of Linda if she wasn't involved? Unless… I zoomed in.The school building was visible behind her. The clock on the wall showed 6:17 p.m.I frowned. That was after school hours, why had Linda been there that late? I opened my messages and sent a text to Adrienne.Me: Are you awake? The reply came almost immediately.Adrienne: Unfortunately.Me: I need you to check something.Adrienne: I knew this wasn't going to be a normal conversation. I sent him the picture. The typing bubble appeared, then disappea

Kael's POVI stared at the photograph until my eyes began to hurt. The name on the ID was still visible, not clearly enough to be certain, but clearly enough to make my mind race..I zoomed in again. The image became blurry.“Kael?”.Adrienne's voice sounded distant. I didn't answer.“Kael.”“What?”“You've been staring at that picture for almost a minute.” I locked my phone.“Let's go.”“Where?”“To the classroom.” Adrienne frowned.“Why?”“Because whoever took this picture was there.”.He looked at the screen again.“And you think they're still there?”“I don't know.”“Then maybe—”“Adrienne.”.He stopped..I didn't know what I was expecting to find.A person?A clue?Anything? All I knew was that I couldn't sit there staring at a photograph while someone watched Milky from a few metres away. We rushed toward the classroom, the hallway was unusually quiet. Too quiet. I pushed the door open. Everyone inside turned, Milky looked up immediately. Her eyes met mine. She looked very confused.

Akira's POV I couldn't stop staring at the photograph, my hands felt cold. The person in the picture was familiar, too familiar. But the photograph was blurry, and the poor lighting made it difficult to tell exactly who it was. Still, there was something about the face that made my stomach twist. “Who is that?” I whispered. Kael didn't answer. He was staring at the screen as if he could somehow force the photograph to become clearer. “Kael?” “I don't know.” “You said you knew them.” “I said the face looked familiar.” I swallowed. “That isn't the same thing.” “No.” He zoomed in again. The image became even more distorted. “Damn it.” I took a step closer. “Can you recognize anything?” “The hoodie.” I frowned. “The black one?” He nodded. “I've seen it before.” “Where?” He didn't answer immediately. “School.” My heart sank. “Do you know who owns it?” “No.” “Then we still don't know who this is.” Kael locked his phone. “Exactly.” I released a breath. For some reason,
