I wake up with a deep gasp, my heart pounding so fast as if I’ve just run a marathon in my sleep. For a few seconds, I don't move. I just sit there, taking in deep breaths, trying to fill my lungs with adequate air. I'm warm. I'm in my bed. In my bedroom I glance around at the curtains, the dresser, among other framed photographs sitting on the nightstand, I focus on the one of me and grandma hugging each other. I register intense pain immediately. “Ouch,” I mumble under my breath as I slowly pull my hands out from beneath the covers and stare at my wrists. Red marks circle them. My eyes widen in shock. I kick the duvet away and draw my knees up to my chest. That’s when I notice the tiny cut on my knee. I examine my ankles. Red marks circle them too. My fingers tremble as they travel toward my throat. A thin, tender cut crosses the skin. “No. No, no, no, no,” I whisper, panic rising.
