Chapter 1

Under the dazzling lights of the banquet hall, I watched, powerless to stop it, as my own wife wrapped her arms around another man."You silly thing," Megan Louis said. "How could I keep you without a title any longer?"I wanted to ask her, then what about me? What were ten years of devotion and my best years worth? Before I could even open my mouth, a nurse beside me shoved a huge bouquet into my hands."What are you standing around for? Dr. Statham reserved these flowers ahead of time. Him asking for you by name to deliver them is an honor. Get up there already."My wife was about to announce her relationship with another man, and I was supposed to hand them flowers and wish their perfect romance smooth sailing. How pathetic could I possibly be?I threw the flowers to the floor and said coldly, "I've never heard of a husband delivering flowers for his wife's lover."The crowd stared at me, stunned. A few seconds later, the room erupted into laughter."What husband? That's ju

Megan just stood there quietly, listening to her lover insult me, nodding along every so often in agreement. She looked at me like I was some unforgivable criminal. That look of disgust on her face was the blade that cut deepest.I pointed at Drew, my hand shaking."Megan, is that what you think too?"She waved her hand, impatient."Enough. What right does a powerless nobody like you have to question me? I'm the deputy director now. Push your luck with me again and I'll have you fired.""But would you even be deputy director without me?"The question came out of me numbly. Megan couldn't hold back a laugh when she heard it."Have you lost your mind? I made deputy director because Drew's family pulled strings behind the scenes. What does that have to do with you?"Drew looked at me with something like pity."I doubt you'll ever know what it feels like to have a family lifting you up. Then again, you don't even know who your birth parents are, so of course you wouldn't underst

Chapter 3

I laughed so hard my eyes nearly watered. If I really cared this much about money, why hadn't I just gone home and let my parents arrange a marriage for me back then? Instead, I'd fought with them and walked away, choosing to struggle through hard times by her side.Megan denied every bit of what I'd given up over the years, twisting it into me mooching off her instead. She'd forgotten that back when we had nothing, I'd never once thought about leaving her. I'd never so much as lifted a finger before I met her, and I still took on three jobs just to lighten her load. I lost almost twenty pounds in a single month and ended up with a serious stomach condition.Seeing me laugh like that rattled her."What's so funny? Have you lost your mind?"I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and looked at her seriously."Megan, I don't care what you think of me anymore. But I am never staying by your side again. Just picturing the two of your faces together makes me sick."Her face fl

Chapter 4

The one thing my parents told me most, growing up, was this:"You were born to live a comfortable life. Your mother and I earn money so you can spend it."And it was true. Up until college, I had no idea what hardship even meant. I was used to a life where everything was handed to me.I'd assumed my path would follow exactly the one my parents had mapped out for me: graduate from university, come home, marry into a suitable match, then inherit the family business and live out a wealthy, comfortable life. But everything changed the day I met Megan. She was the first person I'd ever seen who could wear a white dress that beautifully. She smiled at me faintly under a cherry blossom tree, and I lost every ounce of reason I had.For the first time in my life, the obedient, well-behaved son picked a fight with his own parents. No matter what, I was dead-set on bringing Megan home.My mother shook with anger and gave me a stern warning."I looked into this girl's past. She's been dati

Chapter 5

After the call cut off, everyone's eyes darted back and forth between the two of us, gossip written all over their faces."What... what exactly is going on here?"It wasn't just them. Even Megan Louis herself looked completely lost."The Greenwoods? What does the Greenwoods have to do with anything? Weston's an orphan with no parents to speak of. What help could he possibly give me?"She muttered it to herself, unable to believe it.Before she could even finish the thought, the office door swung open.In walked Cindy Goodwin, one of the most celebrated genius physicians in the medical world, and the eldest daughter of the Goodwin family, a true dynasty of doctors. She had the genuine skill and training to back up her reputation, nothing like the fraud Megan had built her whole career pretending to be.The moment Cindy stepped in, her eyes locked onto me, and she broke into a brilliant smile."I knew you'd be here! I came straight over the second I got the call from your parents

Chapter 6

By the time I got home, my parents had already prepared all my favorite dishes. After all these years apart, the white in my mother's hair was jarring to see, and my father's frame had stooped considerably. The tall, sturdy father I remembered had somehow grown old without my noticing, and I'd missed the most important years of his life. The thought alone brought tears to my eyes.My knees buckled, and I dropped to the floor in front of them."Mom, Dad. I've been a terrible son."My parents' eyes had already welled up, though they'd tried not to let it show in front of me. Seeing me break down, they both stepped forward and pulled me into a tight embrace."You're home, that's all that matters. What parent in the world blames their own child? Just stay by our side from now on. That's all we need."It was true. The only people in this world who could love you unconditionally were family.Thinking about all the humiliation I'd endured at Megan's side over the years, I cried like a

My parents' people moved fast.Within a few short hours, everything Megan had been doing behind my back over the years had been dug up in full detail. Just the hotel receipts from her trysts with Drew alone filled several thick folders.Even on the day we got our marriage license, she'd claimed she had a surgery that afternoon she couldn't miss. In reality, she'd been rushing off to a hotel room with Drew.Drew's family hadn't approved of the two of them getting together, and Megan had needed a devoted workhorse to wait on her in the meantime. That was where I came in.She never expected that the man who spoke so elegantly and carried himself with such polish would actually turn out to be broke. But she hadn't had any other choice at the time. And I'd trusted her completely, never once suspecting she'd cheat on me.No wonder her attitude toward me had done a complete one-eighty the moment she heard both my parents were supposedly dead. She must have decided she couldn't just sett

Chapter 8

After years of me footing the bill and drawing a fat salary on top of it, Megan had long since gotten used to living large. Even now that she'd been fired and was stuck at home, she couldn't shake the habit of spending freely.Add Drew into the mix, and after a while of living it up together, their bank account balance ran dry fast. With only Drew bringing in any income, it wasn't long before he started complaining."Could you not go out and find some kind of job? You're buying stuff online every single day. The delivery boxes barely fit in this place anymore!"Megan shot him an irritated look."I'm pregnant. How is a pregnant woman supposed to go out and work? Besides, if you can't even provide me with a decent life, then what's the point of being with you?"Drew's temper flared."We're basically out of money here. Keep this up, and we're all going to starve together!"That set Megan off immediately."Go ask your parents for money! I'm carrying their eldest grandson. If anyth
