The suspension lasted exactly one day before the house began to feel too small.Too quiet.Too tense.Max wasn't allowed to leave. His phone had been confiscated. His friends had stopped texting after learning about the suspension.By Wednesday afternoon, he was pacing his bedroom like a caged animal.Downstairs, Sarah sat at the kitchen table, trying to balance the household bills.Since Simon's death, money had never been abundant. She worked longer hours than she cared to admit.Micah helped whenever he could.Even Nate had quietly insisted on paying for groceries while he was staying with them.Still...Some months were harder than others. She rubbed her temples.Another overdue electricity bill.Another repair that would have to wait. The sound of footsteps interrupted her thoughts

Rain tapped gently against the kitchen windows. It had started sometime after breakfast, turning the sky a dull shade of gray and filling the Elsher house with the kind of lazy silence that only rainy afternoons could bring.Sarah had gone grocery shopping.Micah had been called into the rehabilitation clinic for an emergency consultation. For the first time since Nate had arrived home...The house belonged to only two people.Neither of them spoke.----------------------Nate occupied the dining room table, which had disappeared beneath mountains of medical textbooks. His notes covered almost every available inch of wood.Colored sticky notes stuck out from anatomy atlases.Flashcards littered the floor around his chair. His laptop displayed practice questions for his licensing examinations. He answered one.Deleted i

For the first time in weeks...There was laughter in the Elsher house. It wasn't loud.It wasn't constant. But it existed.Sarah nearly dropped the plate she was drying when she heard it drift down the staircase. She looked toward Micah."...Was that Max?"Micah stopped halfway through making coffee."No... It can’t be"Another laugh. This one unmistakably belonged to Nate. Then—"Oh, come on!""That answer is biologically impossible.""It is not!""It absolutely is.""You can't prove that.""I literally have three anatomy textbooks."Sarah blinked.Micah slowly smiled."I think..." He whispered. "...they're arguing.""They're definitely arguing."Another burst of laughter followed.Sarah pressed a hand over her mouth. It had been months since she'd heard Max laugh without forcing it.Months.----------------------Upstairs...Max glared across the desk."I still think the answer's B."Nate circled option C for the third time."The heart does not have six chambers.""It could.""No, i

The house settled early that evening.Rain had threatened all afternoon but never arrived, leaving the air cool enough for everyone to open the windows.Sarah had gone to bed shortly after ten.Micah was working another overnight shift at the rehabilitation hospital. That left only two lights burning in the entire house. One in the kitchen. One in the living room.----------------------Nate sat at the dining table with his laptop open.An untouched cup of coffee had gone cold beside him.He had spent the last twenty minutes reading the same paragraph in his pathology notes. He couldn't remember a single word.He sighed and closed the laptop."Hopeless."His exams were only a few months away.Ordinarily, that thought would have terrified him.Instead...He felt strangely detached.

The Elsher house had a habit of becoming impossibly quiet after ten o'clock.Sarah had gone to bed an hour earlier after reminding everyone—twice—that Max's suspension officially ended on Monday and that she expected him to "walk into that school looking like a young man with some sense."Micah had laughed.Max had groaned.Nate had wisely stayed out of it.Now, with the lights dimmed and the television off, only the ticking grandfather clock in the hallway interrupted the silence.----------------------Max couldn't sleep. He rolled onto his side. Then onto his back. Then onto his stomach. The digital clock on his bedside table glowed.11:42 PM.He sighed dramatically."This is stupid."He threw the blanket aside and padded downstairs in his socks. The kitchen was dark, lit only by the small light above the sink.He poured himself a glass of water.Still not sleepy
