River My head was banging the moment I chose to open my eyes. The lights here were too bright. I blinked several times trying to make sense of where I was. There was a dull ache in my chest. My throat was dry, my body was heavy. It was as though I had been sleeping for days. “River?” I turned my head slowly. Mira was sitting beside my bed. Why was she smiling?“Oh my God, you are awake.” She reached for my hand and held it to her face. “Are you okay?” I stared at her for a moment before I took my hand away from hers. I tried to sit up straight but I failed because my vision was becoming blurry. “Where is Zara?” “I think the question you should be asking is what happened to me?” “You can at least start talking since you know it all.” She rolled her eyes. “Well…you had an allergic reaction.” My memory began to come in fragments. I remember going to my room to get my allergy pills because Zara had been making something with cheese. I think I was not able to get the drugs. “H

Zara I was half way through packing when I realized I had no idea what I was doing. There were clothes scattered across my bed, two pairs of shoes sitting beside my suitcase, and a small pile of things I still hadn’t decided whether I actually needed. I picked up another dress and stared at it. Then I folded it and placed it inside. This trip had been the most anticipated things for me this week. I had looked forward to it for the longest. It will just be me and Elizabeth taking a break from everything and having real fun. Speaking of Elizabeth, I picked up my phone and dialed her number. She appeared on my screen and I immediately looked away. “Elizabeth.” She laughed. “What? Haven’t you seen my boobs before?” “Can you put some clothes on?” “No. I’m in my house and I can do whatever I want. And you could do the same too. Maybe River might just walk in on you and who knows, you guys might have a good time.” “That is not happening.” “You need to get laid, girl, it’s been w

Zara By the time I arrived at the resort, I had already decided that I was going to enjoy myself to the fullest. The lady at the reception welcomed me with a smile before handing me over to Ike of the resort attendants, who led me through a beautifully landscaped path toward my room. When the door opened, I stopped. “WOW.” The room was enormous. A king sized bed sat in the middle, surrounded by comfortable loungers and white umbrellas.“Okay..”Maybe coming alone wasn’t such a bad idea after all. I immediately grabbed my phone and called Elizabeth. “Finally!” “You need to see this.” I turned the camera around to give her a full room tour. “”Zara!” “I know.” “That’s your room?” “Apparently.” “Girl I would disappear if I had a room like that.” “It’s so big and beautiful.” “Make sure you enjoy every second of your stay there. Don’t think about anything.” We talked for another minute before I ended the call. There was a private pool at the side of the room. The view was

Zara I spotted River at breakfast, sitting alone at the table overlooking the ocean. As usual he looked completely unbothered by everything around him.I walked toward him with the resort brochure in my hand. “Good morning.” He lifted his eyes from his coffee. “Morning.” I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down. “I found something interesting that we could do today.” “What?” “The resort has activities and they all look interesting. So we will be doing all of them.” He shrugged. “I’m not interested.” “If you were not interested, why are you still here? You would have left before sunrise without a word, exactly the way you came.” “I will not leave because you want me to leave.”“That’s not what I asked.” I picked up the brochure and went through it for the third time this morning. “Since you are here, you might as well do something fun for once in your life.” I flipped through the brochure. “Let’s see….” “I said I was not interested Zara.” “There is kayaking, snor

River I woke up earlier than intended. I had barely slept. My thoughts were just all over the place. I had meetings with investors that I had to put on hold to be here. My mind went to what happened in the kitchen with Zara. I had never been particularly good at comforting people. I preferred solutions. Problems had answers but emotions rarely did. Yet when I’d seen her frightened, none of that had mattered. I had simply wanted her to stop shaking. I got out of bed to take a shower and get dressed. The minute I stepped out of my room the smell of eggs and toast hit me. Zara was sitting at the kitchen counter. Her eyes on her phone. Her hair loosely tied, a few strands falling around her face, one leg tucked beneath her as she ate. There was another plate covered beside her. “Good morning.” “Morning,” she said with a smile. “Is that for me?” “Yes.” Her eyes remained on mine. “I wasn’t going to make breakfast and not save you a plate.” I took the seat opposite her. “Th
