Chapter Fifty-One — Under His Direction

I came up the west line at ten to seven with nothing in my hands and nothing in my pockets, which is the first thing about that morning I want written down.Theo was already there. He had a lantern hung on the sound post at the top of the run and the tools laid out on a tarp in a straight row, handles all pointing the same way, which is not how I have ever laid tools out in my life. Folded in his glove was the work sheet, copied off the ordinary column in Ames's book, my initials at the end of the line where I had put them yesterday afternoon.Below us the ground fell away to the culvert. Two posts were down, snapped off at the frost line since the freeze, and about thirty feet of wire lay in the grass with ice in it, gray and stiff as a dropped rope."Kane," Theo said.He has called me a great many things over the years and none of them was that. He put no particular weight on it, and waited to see whether I would make him say it twice."Theo.""Before anything else." He opened the s

Chapter Fifty-Two — What Did Not Change Hands

At a quarter past ten the front office table had five actual things on it and one inherited lie.The day book, open at the fifteenth. The rota, folded twice, the week's changes in Cole's hand. The stores tally with a rubber band around it. The standing orders in their gray folder, thicker than it needs to be and always has been. The ordinary key ring, flat, tags out, where Ames had set it down.Beside all of it lay the old inventory sheet, copied forward from the last succession and the one before that, and its second line read KEYS / RECORDS AS HELD."Which keys?" I said."That is the whole of the entry," Ames said. "That line has come off the previous sheet every time. I have never been asked to expand it."Nobody in this valley has looked at that ring in thirty years, Nyx said. They have been handing over a sentence.Mara had her stick against the table leg and her book squared in front of her, and she got to the other thing before anybody could start being polite about it."Before

Chapter Fifty-Three — One Yes Is Not Two

I got back to Mara's a little after half past one, and Rhys met me at the door with the truck already rolling along the windowsill. Both wheels on, the pin holding, the paint worn soft at the corners the way it goes on a thing carried everywhere."It rolls good now," he said. "I want to show him. In the snow, where it's all bumpy." He tipped his head toward the gate — the road his father walks up to and not past."Show your father," I said, to be sure I had the shape of it."Yeah. In the yard."Rowan was already up off the bench by the stove."I'm not going out there," he said. He said it the way he tells me a sock is wet — a fact, handed to whoever deals with facts. "I don't want to see him. Rhys can."Two answers, arrived in the same minute at the same stove, and still two, because two children stood there and not a set of them."Rhys wants to go out and show him the truck," I said, so nobody could pick it up wrong later. "Rowan wants to stay in. Both are allowed, and nobody is fold

Chapter Fifty-Four — The Road He Closed

I reported to Theo at a quarter to seven on a fresh sheet — one day, one job, hauling feed up the west line to the stores keeper's shed. A fresh sheet, not yesterday's fence work run on into a standing place I could call mine; the ordinary book carried a new line for that morning, issued to Theo, and my initials sat at the end of it and nowhere else. The first loaded cart came up a little after seven, the driver at the horse's head, still short of the culvert lip when Theo's hand went up and stopped it dead.He had seen it before any of us. The bank on the culvert side — the hollow one, the void two feet in from the edge that I'd put my hand on in the freeze and he'd carried forward in the book — had cracked along the top of the frost overnight, a clean dark line the length of a stride, and the ground inside it had dropped two fingers' width under nothing but its own weight.Nobody was hurt. The cart never reached it. That is the whole of the danger, and I am glad to keep it that smal

Chapter Fifty-Five — Thirteen Ounces Is Not a Name

Ames had the three of them on the outer table by a quarter past ten, and he had them apart, which is the whole reason I let the morning start there.Cole's closure and reroute, in a sourced copy. Theo's bank findings on their own certified page. The stores keeper's counts, a third sheet, sacks and hours at a shed door. Three papers off one morning, and not one of them touching another."They can sit on the same table," I said. "They do not go into the same custody, and nothing on one gets read across onto another. If they meet, they meet in a line I write at the end, and not in a heap in the middle.""Say what you're looking at them for," Mara said, "before you look."That was fair. I gave her the question and only the question."This morning the first ration load came off the stopped cart and was split onto two pack frames for the stable road. The stores record counted sacks, hours and custody. It did not weigh what might ride inside any counted load." I kept my hands flat on the woo

Chapter Fifty-Six — The Mark at the Other Door

Ames came back to the outer table at half past one with the two of them in separate covers, which is the only way I would have let either one onto the wood. One held a certified copy of the old repair request, the job number on the flap. The other held a certified extract of a single post-book page, its own envelope, its own line of custody down the side. Both source originals remained in their own keeping — the building-repair record and the old post book, each down its own chain — and neither came to this table. He set the two covers a hand apart and opened neither, because the order we read them in was going to matter more than anything printed on either page."Before we start," I said. "A road to check is not a road proved. Whatever these two say, at the end of the afternoon I want to be standing exactly where the paper leaves me and not one step past it."I ruled a clean sheet into three and headed them. PLACE. PASSAGE. CONTENT. The first two I might add to today. The third I dre

Chapter Fifty-Seven — The Mark After the Bell

Ames set it on the outer table at ten past eight — one cover, one seal, the index lettered across the flap in his own hand: the book by its plain name, the folio the cross-reference gave, the shift beside it.I left the flap alone and took a clean sheet first.MOVEMENT? I wrote. BOTH ENDS? SAME MOVEMENT?Below them, spaced wide so nothing could drift across, three more headings with white under every one.CART. LOAD. HAND.The coal-and-cart record itself stayed where it lives, down its own chain and in its own keeping. What lay in front of me was a certified extract of one page, signed at the foot by the wolf who made it before it left that room. One folio. One shift. The whole of what the morning had been given."Those three stay empty unless the page fills them itself," I said. "The book on that flap is called the coal-and-cart book. That is the name of the shelf it sits on. It will not answer any of the three, and if I let it try, I will have proved a cart out of a label.""A book

Chapter Fifty-Eight — One Open at the Bell

Ames set the second certified cover beside the morning's extract before noon."Same day. Same handover count. Necessary headings; open, carried, received, closed; this movement tally. The source stays in its own custody. The certification was signed at the foot before the extract left the room."I left the flap sealed, ruled *BELL* down a clean sheet, and wrote *STATUS? COUNT? RECORD RESPONSIBILITY?* on both sides. Below them: *OBJECT. PERSON. CART. LOAD.*"None of those four gets answered by handover," I said. The request had gone down at half past ten; the answer was on the wood inside the hour."That word will be all over this sheet. It is the name of a procedure at a desk. It will not tell me a thing went from one grip to another, and if I let it, I will have proved a pair of hands out of a heading.""A procedure is not an act," Mara said. "You wrote this morning that a book title is not a load. Put this under it, in the same ink, before you open anything."I put it under it.Ames

Chapter Sixty — The Floor She Never Left

Bram's old page and narrowed page were sealed in their own file and taken off the outer table. The certified extract returned separately to the day file. What remained was the sealed TESS folder, blank record pages, and four empty headings on my sheet: HEARD. SAW. STOOD. MEANT. Ames entered the hour and the wolves present. The guard brought Tess by the outer way, which did not pass the room Bram was in, then left. Nothing on the table could tell her who had answered first or what any book had said."Four things," I said. "What you heard. What you saw. Where you stood. And what you meant."The folder was opened in front of her. Ames broke the seal while she watched, then read the questions in the order they had been written earlier that day, before either sheet was sent or either wolf was re-questioned. I did not add one. I did not move one up. A question asked out of turn because of an answer given in another room is a question I have leaned on, whatever words I dress it in.She had t

Chapter Fifty-Nine — The Step He Did Not See

Ames came back to the outer table at ten past two with a narrow certified extract and the two folders from the day file. The source post book had not left the chain it entered when it came off the stair-head on the night of the seventh. He set the folders a hand apart. BRAM. TESS. Both had been sealed earlier that day and neither had been sent. The record envelope and the BRAM folder would be opened. The TESS folder would not.I ruled a clean sheet into four before anything was unsealed.BOOK? RELIEF MARK? PERSONAL SIGHT? INFERENCE?Ames read the scope off his own index, the way he does. The seventh of January. The stair-head post book, that watch and no other. Page headings where the entries cannot be read without them. Whether the Elder's mark at ten past four stands on it as it was described. Whether the specified watch page runs continuous. Whether any mark of relief, transfer, or post handed appears within that window. And, separately, whether the custody index lists an independe
