The next seven days dissolved into a blur of aching muscles, bruised skin, and the relentless, high-speed hum of hard drives. Joanna had promised a brutal routine, and she delivered without mercy.Every morning at five o'clock sharp, the chilly warehouse floor transformed into a grueling combat academy. Jake proved to be a quiet, uncompromising instructor. He didn't coach like a gym personal trainer; he taught them how to survive, disable, and kill with absolute efficiency."Again," Jake’s voice would ring out, flat and steady, over the sound of heavy breathing and the sharp slap of limbs hitting the mats.Under his watchful eye, their progress was measured in bruises and split-second reactions. Joanna quickly learned to channel her newly enhanced stamina and speed into precise, lethal joint locks and rapid knife transitions. She held off on her strength ability though since it seemed to stay stagnant at level 1. Joanna knew she needed zombie cores to upgrade it so she could just wait

"Now," Joanna said, her eyes flashing with sudden urgency. "We have less than ten minutes before the police dispatch gets here. Jolie go turn on the lights. Raven, Step back."Jolie and Raven quickly retreated toward the exit. Joanna stood in the center of the massive floor, extending her hand. Her mind connected with her vast, upgraded pocket dimension. With a silent, invisible pull, the air vibrated. One by one, the massive, multi-ton shipping containers vanished into thin air, sucked instantly into the safety of her spiritual space. 40 of the shipping containers disappeared in a matter of seconds.Joanna left exactly one container sitting in the corner—an empty, unmodified shell they had purchased earlier. To any investigator, or thug, it would look like the thieves had only targeted a single, ordinary shipping container, leaving no trace of how many they had actually possessed."Let's go," Joanna said, turning toward the exit.By the time the blue and red lights of the police crui

"So," Jolie said, draping her legs across the backseat and resting her head on a soft duffel bag. "If the world is ending in six weeks, do we get to stop paying taxes now, or do we have to wait for the actual grid collapse? Because I have a very annoying internet bill due on Tuesday.""I think the collection agencies might be a little busy dealing with the flesh-eating virus and the undead, Jolie," Joanna said from the front seat, her voice carrying a dry humor that made Jolie laugh."Shame," Jolie sighed. "I was really looking forward to telling them a zombie ate my router.""Don't worry," Jake chimed in, eyeing her in the rearview mirror. "With your talking speed, you could probably bore the zombies to death before they even reach the router.""Hey! My talking speed is highly efficient and intellectually stimulating!" Jolie retorted, throwing a stray piece of crumpled paper at the back of his head. It bounced harmlessly off his shoulder. "Besides, if a zombie comes near me, I'm just

Joanna didn't blink. "I knew the collapse was coming," she said, her voice a calm, unwavering anchor. "And I'm glad you made it here.""Wait, back up," Allen snapped, marching into the living room with a dish towel slung over his shoulder and a half-peeled potato in hand. He glared at Joanna, his sarcastic guard masking genuine, exhausted frustration. "A car packed with bats, clothes, and MREs? That wasn't a hunch. You knew. And you let us sit in Felton while the government prepared a zombie buffet?"Jolie followed him out of the kitchen, her nervous energy completely vanishing. She gently took the potato and knife from his tense hands. "Don’t pretend you would have believed us if we mentioned zombies, Allen," she said softly, her eyes holding his with a rare, grounded warmth. "But you're safe now. Let's get some food in you."Allen's grouchy posture melted slightly under her touch. He let out a defeated sigh, muttering, "Fine. But if the chicken is dry, I'm joining the other side.""

Joanna’s heart hammered against her ribs, the sheer magnetic pull of him threatened to scramble her focus. Annoyed at her own physical reaction, she abruptly slapped his hand away from her chin and stepped back, breaking the spell."Sit down, Julian," she ordered, her voice curt as she gestured toward the sofa.Julian blinked, momentarily surprised by her sudden coldness, but he complied, throwing his overcoat over the back of the chair. As he sat, his sharp eyes instantly swept the room, taking in the tactical rigs, the state-of-the-art communication equipment, and the heavy-duty crates stacked neatly against the wall.He raised an eyebrow, looking back at her. "So, is this it? The end of the world?""You could say that," Joanna said, crossing her arms and staying a safe distance away. "But you shouldn’t have come here, Julian. You still have to go to that mountain in your grandmother's hometown."Only she knew the truth: that mountain peak, during a freak storm, was where he would b
