All Chapters of The Velvet Spire: Chapter 1 - Chapter 10

Mara Vale was not born prudish. She was made prudish. She was constructed, piece by piece, from the raw material of a child who'd wanted to be seen and been taught that being seen was dangerous. She grew up in a town two hours north of the one she'd eventually settle in — a smaller place, a colder place, the kind of New England town where the houses had narrow windows and the people inside them had narrower opinions. Her mother, Diane, was a woman who had grown up believing that women were meant to be looked at and then resenting the looking. Her father, Carl, was a man who worked at a distribution center and came home smelling of cardboard and diesel and something Mara would later recognize as the chemical signature of quiet rage.Diane Vale had opinions about clothing. Specifically, she had opinions about her younger daughter's clothing. Mara had been an early developer — breasts at eleven, hips by twelve, a body that arrived before the mind inside it was ready. And Diane, who had h

The first hour was confusion. The second was fear. The third was panic.Mara cycled through them like a woman trapped on a carousel, each emotion replacing the last, each one worse. She paced the dungeon — fifty feet of space, cathedral-high ceilings, her creation pressing in on her from every wall. The silicone pieces hung limp on their rigs, powered down, silent. The cameras were dead. The lights were amber emergency strips that gave everything the quality of a submarine at depth. She tried everything. The door — sealed. The override — denied. The biometric — accepted but irrelevant. The ventilation shafts — too narrow, angled, designed to move air, not people. She stopped pacing. She forced herself to sit on the velvet platform — her stage, now her bed — and she did what she did best. She assessed. The mini-fridge. She opened it and catalogued. A case of water — twenty-four bottles, each sixteen ounces. Three quarters of a sleeve of granola bar

Day seven. She ate the last of the trail mix. She drank her last clean bottle of water — she'd been stretching the case for a week, and now it was gone, and the only water left was the recycled water from the bathroom filtration system, which tasted worse every day.Her body was running on fumes. She'd been eating roughly 300 calories a day for a week, and the deficit was catching up to her. She was dizzy when she stood. Her vision grayed at the edges. Her hands trembled when she held them up. She slept in long, broken stretches — not restful sleep, but the heavy, coma-like sleep of a body that was conserving energy. She talked to the props. She couldn't help it. The isolation was worse than the hunger — the complete absence of human contact, of conversation, of any voice but her own. She'd always been comfortable alone, but this was different. This was the kind of alone that pressed against you, that filled the room, that made the silence into a physical weight.

She woke to the sound of footsteps. Not human footsteps. The rhythm was wrong — too heavy, too long in the stride, the impact of something larger than a human walking on a surface that wasn't designed for things its size. The steps sent vibrations through the pavement where she lay, and she felt them in her spine before she heard them with her ears. She opened her eyes. The gray sky was still there, still wrong, still filled with shapes that moved in ways that defied gravity. She was lying on a street — her street, she realized, or what had been her street. The houses were still there, but they were wrong too. Roofs caved in. Walls missing. Gardens overgrown with vegetation she didn't recognize — deep purple, almost black, growing in patterns that were too regular to be natural. And the footsteps were getting closer. She sat up. The world tilted. She gripped the pavement with her bloody fingers and waited for the dizziness to pass, and it did, bar

She was assigned to the prince's wing in her third week. She didn't know why. The assignment came through the servant hierarchy — a reassignment from general cleaning to specific duty, and the specific duty was the residential wing of Prince Xyren Vossk. She suspected it was random. The servant assignments rotated, and she'd been due for a rotation, and the prince's wing needed cleaning, and she was a cleaner. That was all. That had to be all.The prince's wing was in the upper levels of the Spire, accessible through corridors that grew more ornate as she climbed. The walls here pulsed with a deeper blue, and the organic texture was more refined — smoother, more deliberate, the Spire's growth directed and shaped by Veyr aesthetics. His personal quarters were vast. A sleeping chamber with a platform three times the size of hers. A bathing chamber with water that steamed and smelled of minerals. A training room with weapons she didn't recognize. An
