The Veyr language was not designed for human mouths. This was the first thing Mara learned, and it was the most frustrating. The language operated on three levels simultaneously: the verbal — clicks, tonal shifts, resonant frequencies that human vocal cords could approximate but not fully reproduce; the physical — crest positions, body posture, the angle of approach that signaled intent; and the chemical — scent markers, pheromonal signals, the biochemistry of emotion broadcast through the air.A human could learn the verbal. The physical was imitable but limited — human bodies didn't have crests, and the postural vocabulary was calibrated to Veyr anatomy. The chemical was impossible. Mara could not emit Veyr pheromones. She could not broadcast her emotional state in a format that Veyr noses could read as language. She could, however, understand it. And understanding, she discovered, was more powerful than speaking. She carried her scrap of fabric

The lessons changed something in her.Not all at once — not a switch flipped, not a door thrown open. More like a tide coming in, each lesson adding another inch of water until the landscape she'd been standing on was submerged and she was swimming without realizing she'd left the shore. She was thinking about him constantly. Not the fantasy version — she'd spent five years with the fantasy version, and the fantasy version was a silhouette, a shape, a collection of aesthetic details assembled from hentai and imagination. The real Xyren was nothing like the silhouette. He was specific. He was the way his crest caught the light when he tilted his head to listen. The way his fingers — long, dark, tipped with nails that were harder than human bone — pressed too hard on book pages because he didn't know his own strength. The way he said "lonely" like he was tasting something bitter. The way he'd said *I see you* and meant it.She was thinking about him the way

The Genesis Sphere was in the chamber she wasn't supposed to be cleaning. She knew the rules. Dorthea had outlined them on her first day: keep your head down, do your work, don't touch anything that isn't cleaning equipment, don't go where you're not assigned. The rules were simple. The rules kept you alive. Mara had followed them for five weeks without deviation, because Mara understood consequences — she'd built a career on understanding consequences, on the precise calibration of what to show and what to hide, and she knew that survival in a hostile environment meant following the rules even when the rules were stupid. But the Spire was alive, and alive things grew, and when the Spire grew, it changed the layout. The corridor she cleaned every morning — Level Fourteen, the research wing, the section where Veyr scientists conducted work she wasn't cleared to understand — had shifted overnight. Elena had explained this: the Spire's organic growth could re

It started with the bath.He drew the water. The mineral pool in his bathing chamber — the one she'd cleaned, the one she'd refilled, the one she'd knelt beside while he stood shirtless in the doorway and said "wait." The water steamed and smelled of the deep minerals that the Spire provided, and the light in the chamber was amber-gold, warmer than the blue-violet of the corridors."Get in," he said. Not a command. An offering. She hesitated. Not because she didn't want to — because she wanted to so badly that the wanting was a physical force, pulling at her, and the pull was terrifying. She'd wanted things before. She'd built a career on wanting things. But this was different. This was wanting a person, a specific person, a being who was standing in front of her with his hidden arms exposed and his eyes wet and his armor on the floor."Will you —""Yes."She undressed. She hadn't been naked in front of anyone since the last stre

The claiming changed everything and nothing. In his quarters, they were themselves. He read Milton to her in his rough English, stumbling over the meter, and she corrected his pronunciation and he repeated the lines until they sounded right, and the repetition was a kind of intimacy — his voice learning to shape the words she loved. She taught him idioms and he taught her Veyr modal verbs and they lay on the sleeping platform with the indigo blanket wrapped around them and the vel-sark tracing patterns on her skin that she was beginning to understand as a language of their own. He touched her. Not always sexually — sometimes the secondary arms simply held her while they talked, the chemoreceptors reading her moods, transmitting her emotional state to him in a continuous feed that made conversation almost redundant. She could be sitting across the room, thinking about the dungeon, and the arms on his back would tighten and his silver eyes woul
