AVIONNA’S POV The realization that Ivy was going to blame me for another thing I hadn’t done settled in my stomach with a heaviness that made it difficult to breathe. It had always been like this, even when we were younger. It had started with a cup she’d dropped when Mother had given us instructions to get her favorite set from the pantry. Afterwards, she blamed me when she lost father’s glasses. One incident after another, they stacked up, until Father stopped believing me and started to see me as an architect of destruction. AVIONNA’S POV I turned just in time to see another wolf leap over one of the stalls. It was much larger than the black wolf had been, with crimson that glinted with bloodthirst. I had heard of the many wolves that roamed the forestlands but had never seen one up close. Pack laws kept them away from towns and cities and there were border guards and patrols to keep them out. My chest was still heaving from the anger that had driven me down the hallway, but Alpha Fabian looked as calm as ever. The serenity of his gaze infuriated me more than I expected and the snarl I gave came from deep within my throat. How could he stand there like nothing happened, like he hadn’t let me hope in vain.
