chapter 1

"The suppressant failed."Wren counted his pulse against the cold alley brick—four in, four out—waiting for the familiar, artificial calm to settle over his blood. It didn't come.Instead, heat climbed his spine, a dark, suffocating fever unspooling from the base of his neck and spreading into his limbs. His knees buckled, rough concrete scraping through his trousers as he dropped into the soot-stained alley. For sixteen years, the bitter white pills he swallowed every evening had done their job. They flattened his biology into something quiet, manageable, and thoroughly uninteresting. He was a Beta. He worked in a dusty shop three streets over, smelling of mildew, decayed leather, and yellowing paper. He was invisible, and invisible meant alive. Now, the alley turned excruciatingly loud. The distant rumble of delivery trucks rattled his teeth; the hiss of rainwater dripping from rusty fire escapes sounded like tearing silk. Underneath the city’s metallic stench, something new blo

chapter 2

The Rolls-Royce smelled like Kirill.Wren pressed against the passenger door, trying to escape the scent. Cedar. Smoke. Rain-soaked leather. It clung to the seats, the air, the man beside him."You're shaking," Kirill observed."I'm cold.""You're in heat."Wren's jaw tightened. "I'm not—""Your suppressants failed eleven days ago." Kirill's grey eyes flicked toward him. "Your body is compensating for sixteen years of suppression. It will get worse."The casual delivery made Wren's vision go red. "You knew. Before tonight.""I knew."The car pulled away from the alley. The driver was silent, a shadow in a dark suit. This was routine for him.Wren's fingers curled into the leather. "You've been watching me.""Protecting you.""Same thing."Kirill turned to face him. Streetlights carved his features—sharp jaw, hard cheekbones, eyes that had seen too much. "Eleven days ago, someone accessed your mother's sealed medical records. The ones that proved you weren't a Beta."Wren's breath caug

chapter 3

Wren didn't sleep. The guest bed was too soft, the silence too loud, the bond too insistent. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw his mother's letter. Every time he breathed, he caught traces of cedar and smoke—Kirill's scent, clinging to the fabric of the robe, the pillows, the air itself. He'd washed twice. It didn't matter. At 4:47 AM, he gave up.The estate was still dark. Wren pulled on the clothes someone had left for him—dark trousers, a grey sweater that fit too well—and slipped out of the guest room. The hallway stretched empty. Oil paintings watched him pass. The floorboards barely whispered under his feet.He didn't know where he was going. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he was searching for answers. For proof. For anything that might make sense of the past sixteen hours. The study door was unlocked.Wren pushed it open and stepped inside. The photographs of his mother still covered the wall. He crossed to them, studying each one.In some, she was young—barely older th

chapter 4

The car dropped Wren three blocks from the Council's administrative wing.He walked the rest of the way. The morning air was cold, sharp against his cheeks. He'd slept two hours at most, but adrenaline burned through the exhaustion, keeping him upright, focused. His mother's letter was folded in his inner jacket pocket. The key card Kirill had given him was in his right hand, its surface warm against his palm.He looked like a man who belonged here. That was the point. Grey suit, dark tie, polished shoes—clothes that whispered money and power without shouting. Kirill had arranged them. Kirill had arranged everything.Wren hated how grateful he was.The building rose before him, all glass and steel, its facade designed to intimidate. The Council's administrative wing was the heart of the city's legal apparatus—the place where laws were written, records were sealed, and bloodlines were judged.Wren walked through the revolving doors. The lobby was cavernous. Marble floors, high ceilings

chapter 5

Wren walked out of the Council building with the folder pressed against his chest and the bond burning in his veins. The morning sun had broken through the clouds, casting long shadows across the marble steps. He descended slowly, deliberately, forcing himself not to run. Running would draw attention. Running would betray fear. The black sedan was waiting at the curb. Kirill stood beside it, his grey eyes scanning the building's entrance, his body coiled with controlled tension. When he saw Wren, something in his posture shifted. Relaxed, almost."You're alive," Kirill said."Did you expect otherwise?""I expected the Council to try to stop you." Kirill opened the rear door. "Get in. We need to talk."Wren slid into the backseat. The leather was warm, the scent of cedar and smoke wrapping around him like a familiar weight. Kirill climbed in beside him, and the driver pulled away from the curb without being told."Who was in the stairwell?" Kirill asked.Wren's jaw tightened. "You were

Chapter 6

The Council building at night was a different creature. During the day, it had been all marble and glass, polished floors and bureaucratic efficiency. Now, shadows stretched across the corridors. Fluorescent lights hummed with a tired, mechanical persistence. The security guards had been rotated, their replacements less vigilant, more focused on external threats than internal movement. Wren walked beside Kirill, his footsteps silent on the carpeted floor. The blood-key card was warm in his pocket, a constant reminder of what he carried—the proof of his heritage, the key to his family's secrets, the weapon he would use to tear down the Council's lies. The bond hummed between them, a low current of awareness that made Wren's skin prickle. He could feel Kirill's presence without looking, could sense the Alpha's controlled breathing, his steady pulse, the way his attention swept the corridor like a searchlight. Kirill had insisted on coming. Not as a chaperone, not as a guard—as a part

chapter 7

Wren didn't sleep. The evidence from the archive was spread across Kirill's desk—photographs, letters, financial records, surveillance images. He'd been staring at them for hours, his eyes burning, his mind refusing to quiet. The Council had sanctioned the massacre. His uncle had carried out the orders. Mira had been manipulating everyone for sixteen years. And someone else—someone who wasn't Mira—had been using Anatoly's credentials to cover it all up. Wren picked up the surveillance photographs of Mira. She was everywhere in the images—entering buildings, meeting with men in dark suits, handing over documents in shadowed alleyways. His uncle had been watching her, gathering evidence, building a case. But his uncle had died before he could use it. Or had he? Wren's jaw tightened. Anatoly's death was officially reported, but the details were suspicious. A car accident. No witnesses. A personal physician who later died under similar circumstances. Someone had been cleaning up

chapter 8

Three days of waiting, of planning, of the bond settling into something that felt less like a wound and more like a heartbeat. Wren learned the layout of the estate. He learned the guards' names. He learned the weight of Kirill's silence, the way the Alpha could fill a room without speaking. He also learned that Kirill noticed when he hadn't eaten, because food appeared beside him without comment. He learned that Kirill never asked if he was sleeping, because the bond told him. He learned that Kirill's protection wasn't about control—it was about presence. The evidence from the archives had been catalogued, cross-referenced, analyzed. But there was still something Wren couldn't shake. A pattern he'd noticed but couldn't explain. He was sitting at the desk, staring at the access logs, when Kirill entered the study. The Alpha was carrying a slim folder, his grey eyes sharp with something Wren couldn't read. "We have a lead," Kirill said. Wren didn't look up. "What kind of lead?"

chapter 9

The bullet came through the window before Wren heard the gunshot.Glass exploded across the desk. The bond screamed—a violent, electric jolt that sent him diving to the floor before his mind had processed the sound. He felt the heat of the round pass inches above his head.Kirill.Wren scrambled to his feet. The estate was under attack. He could hear shouting, the clash of metal, the wet sound of bodies hitting the floor. He grabbed the candlestick from the mantel and moved toward the door.He didn't think about running. He thought about Kirill. About the Alpha who had promised to protect him. About the man who had become someone he couldn't afford to lose. The corridor was chaos. Dark figures swarmed through broken windows, their faces obscured by black masks. They moved with precision—Council-trained, Kirill had said. But there was something distinctive about them. Silver rings on their right hands. A specific weapon—serrated blades, not standard issue.Kirill was in the center of t

chapter 10

The address led them to a district Wren had never visited. It was the kind of place that existed in the margins—old buildings, narrow streets, the kind of forgotten neighborhood where people went when they didn't want to be found. The building name matched the one on the paper, but there was no number, no sign, no indication of which apartment belonged to his father.Wren stood on the cracked pavement, staring up at the weathered facade. The bond hummed between them, warm and constant, a reminder that Kirill was beside him."He's here," Wren said. "I can feel it."Kirill's grey eyes scanned the building. "How do you know?""I don't know." Wren's voice was quiet. "But I do."They entered the building together. The stairwell was dim, the air thick with dust and neglect. Wren climbed slowly, his heart pounding, his senses on high alert. The bond was a constant pulse between them, guiding him forward. The door was at the end of the hallway on the fourth floor—plain, unmarked, indistinguis
