Elvina’s POVThe crashing of the ocean waves usually lulled me into a sense of peace, but today the tide was unpredictable. I stood near the shoreline, the cool salt water swirling around my ankles as i stared deep at the water for so long, long enough for my mind to wonder off. The thought of the hell i had been through in my marriage sneaked into my mind yet again after i promised myself not to dwell in the past anymore.I felt a sharp pain in my chest from the acceptance that i could never be enough. After years of dedication to my ex husband Felix, i was still torn apart by him. The start of our marriage was honestly filled with roses and sunshine. Felix was charming and loving, he made me feel special and he just understood me. I fell for his charm over and over, because i couldn’t just get over the idea of someone this perfect being mine. Our marriage was blessed with a beautiful girl, Iris. At first I doubted Felix’s ability to be a father, but he never seized to prove me w

Elvina’s POVI pulled into Helena’s driveway, the engine idling for a moment as I took a deep breath. Seeing Felix had drained whatever leftover relaxation I’d managed to cling to from the beach, but the moment I stepped out of the car and saw Iris running through the front door toward me, all of that tension melted away."Mommy!" iris squealed, throwing her little arms around my waist."Hi, sweetie," I laughed, lifting her up for a tight hug before setting her back down. "Go grab your bag, okay? We'll head home in a minute."Helena stepped onto the porch, leaning against the railing with a knowing grin as Iris darted back inside. "So," Helena drawled, crossing her arms. "How was the beach vacation? Did you actually relax, or did you spend the whole time worrying about work?""I relaxed," I admitted, following her into the kitchen. "A little too much, maybe."Helena eyes lit up instantly. "Wait. What does that mean? Elvina, did something happen?"I hesitated, feeling heat creep up m

(Elvina POV)The morning air was crisp as I dropped Iris off at her elementary school. Seeing her bright, innocent smile as she waved goodbye from the school entrance gave me a moment of clarity. Whatever storm was coming, I had to keep my head up for her. After parking my car at the hospital, I put on my white coat, draped my stethoscope around my neck, and officially stepped into my role as a general surgeon. Medicine was the one place where I felt in total control. The chaos of pack politics, ex-husbands, and mysterious Alpha strangers couldn't touch me inside an operating room. After finishing morning rounds and reviewing a few patient charts, I sat down at my desk to catch up on paperwork. After finishing morning rounds and reviewing a few patient charts, I sat down at my desk to catch up on paperwork. Thinking it might be an emergency regarding my family, I quickly answered. "Mom? Is everything okay?""Elvina," my mother’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and entirely

ELVINA’S POVThe question hit me like a physical blow.“Are you pregnant?”It rang in my ears, sharp and deafening. Of all the things I expected Arthur Thornridge to say in my private office, that was at the bottom of the list. My chest tightened. I knew the answer. Of course I knew. He was the only man I’d been with since my divorce. Before I could form a thought, another wave of nausea slammed into my throat.I dropped my head over the sink, turned the faucet on, and threw up into the drain. Immediately, a wave of heat hovered over my back. Heavy, steady hands reached out, gathering my hair back from my face. Arthur. His grip was gentle, but his presence flooded the small space, making the air feel thick. My hands trembled against the cool porcelain. I washed out my mouth, wiped my lips with the back of my hand, and turned to face him."I’m going to ask you again, Elvina," he said. His voice was low, clear, and stripped of any patience. His dark eyes searched every inch of my fac

ELVINA’S POVThe loud burst of applause and cheering filled the auditorium as the kids filed onto the stage.I sat near the middle row, my eyes locking onto Iris. She looked like a little princess in her white fairy costume, complete with tiny glittery wings. Today was her school’s spring play, and there was no way I was going to miss it.As the music started, I noticed her constantly tugging at her plastic headband. It was slipping down her forehead, making her squint, but she kept singing her heart out anyway. I made a mental note to head backstage the second her scene ended to fix it for her.A sudden wave of nausea rolled through my stomach, making my hands feel cold and clammy. I took a slow breath through my nose, fighting down the sickness while my heart hammered against my ribs.My phone vibrated in my lap. I looked down and saw a text from Helena.> Helena: Hey girl! How’s the play going? I bet Iris is stealing the show! Hope you're hanging in there with the morning sicknes
