The rest of the week went on well, mostly because Nick and i have been doing things together.Eating together and most of the time he spend in my office.Lorry landed back from Geneva Friday morning looking like a man who'd slept exactly four hours and regretted every minute of the flight. He walked straight into the debrief without so much as a "good morning," dropped his briefcase on the table, and said, "Show me."Nick pulled up the Locate model on the main screen without missing a beat."Fully operational," he said. "we've tested it a dozen times over past three days. Facial recognition, camera cross-referencing, live location tracking ... all working."Lorry's eyes narrowed, like he was waiting for the a but."zero technical failures," Nick said, reading his face. "It works, Lorry."One of the engineers pulled up the test logs, walking Lorry through the search radius, the location filtering, the response times. Lorry watched in silence, arms crossed, jaw tight in the specific way

AMARA'S POVI spent Sunday morning pretending to pack a bag I had no intention of using, just in case anyone happened to walk in.Javey had texted back within minutes of my message the day before a string of concerned emojis and *call me when you land, I need details* and Nora had responded almost identically, demanding photos of wherever "home" was supposed to be. Neither reaction had felt off. If anything, they'd both seemed genuinely put out that I was leaving without more warning, which only made the knot in my chest tighten. If it wasn't them, that left a much smaller, much more complicated list.Nick hadn't texted at all.I was still turning that over in my head, deciding whether it meant something or nothing, when my phone buzzed with a message that had nothing to do with fake vacations.**Marcus:** We're in. Come to the safe house when you can. You'll want to hear this in person. The "safe house" was really just a nondescript townhouse two districts over, the kind of place t

Later that dayI texted them both the same message. Come over, I need you.Javey arrived first, bursting through my door like he'd run the whole way over, and Nora came in right behind him still wearing her work apron, hair pins falling out of the bun she clearly hadn't bothered to fix."Wait wait wait," Javey said, throwing his bag on the couch, "you're supposed to be at your parents house right now, what happened, why do you look like that""Sit down, both of you" I said, and something in my voice must have scared them because they actually listened without arguing.Nora sat first, eyes already narrowed like she was preparing for the worst. "Amara you're freaking me out, talk""I never went home""What do you mean you never went home""I lied, I had to, it's a long story but basically the company found out someone leaked our new tech to a rival and they think it's me"Javey's mouth actually dropped open. "They think YOU leaked it? You've been there for like a month""And that basica

When I got to the door I knocked and waited. A moment later it opened, and I found Lorry sitting on the edge of the bed inside, hair messy, tie long gone, looking nothing like the man who ran boardrooms for a living."Ohh wow, you look terrible" I said, stepping inside."I didn't call you here so you could comment on my looks""Umm yeah..fair enough.., my bad. So why am I here, Mr Lorenzo Pablo""I have a question for you. Why did you want to work at Pablo Innovations""What?""You heard me""Because I needed the money""Seriously""Yes""I went through your accounts, and I know you don't need money. I did a background check on you, and I know you're filthy rich. So let me ask you again, Amara Vale, why did you want to work with us""I don't know. First I wanted to do something instead of just being a nepo baby. I needed to learn about business, and I thought being your assistant would give me the experience I needed to start my own eventually. Then I started working with you, and I l

LORRY'S POVI hadn't slept this well in months. That thought alone should have bothered me more than it did, but I was too busy sitting at my kitchen counter with a mug of coffee going cold beside me, turning something Amara had said over and over in my head. Leave room for failure. Flag it or something. At the time it had sounded like the kind of soft, hopeful nonsense people said when they didn't understand how business actually worked. Now, three days later, it wouldn't leave me alone.Because what if it wasn't nonsense at all.Nick found me still sitting there when he let himself in that morning, tossing his keys on the counter like he owned the place, which, to be fair, he practically did."You're up early" he said, eyeing me like I'd grown a second head. "And you look... good, actually. Suspiciously good for someone who just lost billions of dollars to a rival""I had a great night""That's it, that's all I get""That's all you're getting"He studied me a second longer, clearly
