"The gel looks a bit too refined on your hair texture."Clara snapped her head up, her thumb still digging into the nervous lines she'd been tracing across her palm.A girl stood in the doorway, an expensive coat slung over her forearm. She had a thick mane of dyed ginger hair that looked bright enough to bleed, and her skin had that distinct, oily sheen of someone who had just survived a three-hour car ride without AC."Um-" Clara started."It looks nice, don't sweat it." She comments, walking over the chair in the room. "I'm Violet, but everyone calls me Vi. It's a love-hate relationship with my name, actually." The girl cut her off, dropping her bags onto the floor with a soft thud.Clara bit the inside of her cheek, tasting copper. Her face burned hot. How are you supposed to respond to a comment about your hair gel?"I'm, um. Clara. Clara Bellamy," she forced out. Her eyes darted around, desperately looking anywhere but at Vi's face. This was growing awkward as time passed.Vi th

Clara was awakened by the sound of the church bell. The loud vibration traveled straight through the walls and into the frame of her bed, rattling her teeth. She lay perfectly still beneath her blankets, staring up at the unfamiliar ceiling. The room was cold, faintly reeking of thick lavender water from the night before. Just across the room was Violet, who was already on her feet. She was half -dressed in a simple linen shift, standing before the thin mirror nailed to the wall, swearing under her breath as she fought to pin back a mass of tangled ginger hair."You're alive," Violet murmured, catching Clara's reflection. "Good. I was almost starting to get worried that you might have died."Clara pushed herself up into the cold air, drawing her blue hoodie over her knuckles. "They're really loud." She mutters, referring to the bells.Violet slammed an iron pin into her hair with an assertive click. "It's very annoying, I would say that. Give it two weeks, and you'll be hearing ghost

The dining hall was louder than Clara expected. It was everywhere, more alive than she had imagined. The students' voices softly resonated against the ceilings as students filled the rows of tables in the dining hall.Clara slowed near the entrance. The room itself felt impossibly grand for something meant for breakfast. Was this even possible? The chandeliers hung overhead, suspended by long black chains disappearing into the shadows above. The candles would flicker along the center of each table despite the daylight pouring in from outside, their flames bending gently whenever the doors opened behind students. The smell nearly overwhelmed her immediately."You look terrified."Violet appeared beside her, carrying two trays effortlessly. She was dressed in a charcoal-grey skirt that brushed just below her knees, paired with an oversized cream knit sweater whose sleeves nearly swallowed her hands whenever she moved. Her ginger hair looked slightly unruly this morning, falling in loos

"You do realize," Violet's voice came muffled from somewhere beneath a heavy mound of blankets, "—that this school feels like it was built by men who hated the very concept of joy." She says.Outside, the rain pressed steadily against the dormitory windows. It wasn't a violent storm, but it was enough to soak the campus grounds in a grey shroud.Clara had always loved the rain. When she was small, she used to run barefoot into the downpours back home, her dress turning grey with mud as she splashed in the ditches. Her father would watch her from the foggy glass of his study, eventually rushing out to shout at her for ruining her clothes. A small smile etched itself on her face when she remembered when she would offer a small, apology, only to do the exact same thing the next time the clouds broke.Eventually, he'd given up. He knew he couldn't fight the rain in her.Standing by the narrow window slips now, she wished she were out there. She wanted the cold droplets to sting her face a

(5:15 PM)Celeste Dean• (suh-lest)My palm dragged right across the textbook that lay open on the table, leaving a thick smear of ink over three lines of Latin I hadn't even read.I let out a low breath and pressed the heels of my hands into my burning eyes. The library had this golden cast today, and from where I sat, I could feel the heat from the fireplace that wasn't even close to me.I hadn't been studying for the past hour.Three tables over, sitting right in the path of the window, was Rosalie Sinclair. My eyes followed her, and I watched shamelessly as her spine was pin-straight. Her dark hair was gathered with a little cute pink comb, though a few damp pieces had escaped, curling against the side of her neck. Her pen kept running across the paper with full concentration. It was bewitching. Beside her sat a cup of sage tea, untouched, a thin skin forming over the cold liquid. I sighed under my breath. It was embarrassing how easily I noticed everything she did. The little ink s

"Emilia? Can I borrow the lipstick you had on this morning? I'm going to try on a new makeup look tonight." Violet asks. She ruffles her hair and scoots close to me. I stare at her, and I see her roll her eyes. "Violet?" "Yes?" "Where's the lipstick I gave you? You promised you'd return it." I fold my hands across my chest and tilt my head, showing her that I wasn't joking around. It's been three weeks since I arrived at St. Aurelia. Three weeks since my life gradually started changing, and three weeks since I met Violet. Needless to say, Violet was always fond of things like this, and it only happened to me. She would take my stuff and forget to give it back. Well, I don't know if she ever forgets, but she never returns them. I've been trying to be patient with her, but seeing as she was about to borrow Emilia's thing, I already knew where this was going. "Oh." She says with a small smile on her lips. "So about that, I don't know where I put them, but I promise to get you a ne

‎It had been exactly a week since the incident at the Candle Procession. Ever since then, I couldn't quite wrap my head around the whole ordeal. ‎ ‎That night, Emilia and Violet kept pestering me to answer their questions that I didn't have an answer for. It was a lot of pressure and confusion that was weighing on my chest.I hated being confused; it does a lot to my head. ‎ ‎ I remember the following morning, I had tried reaching out to my father. Turns out, we were only able to access our parents or guardians at the end of the term, which was very unfair, if you'd ask me. ‎ ‎I tried not to think about it as the week went by, forcing myself to believe it was a completely normal thing to have happened. But deep down, I knew better. ‎ ‎"She had a birthmark on her ass," a quiet voice snapped me out of it. I blinked and turned toward the voice. ‎ ‎ Violet was leaning sideways over her desk, and she had her hair sticking up in its usual messy knots. She doesn't necessarily spend

I had showered and decided that I was going to wash my hair. My hair hadn't always been this dark; I guess it just grew darker as I aged. My hair fell all the way down to my waist. Today, the washroom was empty, but I could still hear the faint voices of students in the hallway, which somehow made the anxiety worse. I felt my shoulders untense under the steaming water, eventually melting away the tension that had settled into my body. I started slowly by immersing my hair in a lot of shampoo before using the tips of my fingers to massage the roots, working my way to the ends. Hair day was my favourite day of the week because I got to enjoy myself under the warm water of the washroom, sometimes alone. It really depended on the kind of day it was on campus. The sound of the water hitting the floor mixed with the gentle hum that settled in my throat instantly made me relax slightly. I felt the warm water on my face. It continued down my hair, down my back and finally into the drain.

The first bell rang before I was ready for it.I slowly peeled one of my eyes opened, then the other. I had a very weird sleeping position where I would sleep with both of my hands over my chest and my body in a straight form. I don't know if I ever moved throughout the night, but I always woke up in this form.I feel another living thing close to me, making me pause in my thinking. I had a guess at the back of my mind. Slowly, hesitantly, I turned my head to the side to see a familiar face. Violet. For the past couple of days, Violet had been using my bed more than me. Sometimes, I would wake up to her squeezing me to her side or her little snores. However, she didn't snore every time. When I asked her about the sudden switch-up, she blatantly ignored my question, but I was certain it was because of the untidy space she had been ignoring for weeks.I gently lay upright, and on cue, the bell rang again, another ring to wake up the deep sleepers like Violet. It was always like this eve

"You always do this stupid thing when you get pissed and decide to shut the world out. It pisses me the fuck off, and you still wonder if I'm a good friend or not."Two hours. It had been two hours.Violet and Beatrice had been going back and forth. I didn't particularly know what was troubling them or why they were fighting, but Beatrice's voice was really loud. We had our room door opened for some odd reason, insisted by Violet.I sat quietly on my bed, silently listening to their chatter. It's not like I could avoid it either way. They were literally in the room fighting."The fuck you mean by that? Yes, I have issues of my own, but that doesn't mean you should try guilt-tripping me every time. I'm still human, and I understand that I have flaws. I'm working on it, I really am." Violet counters back, and for a second, I swear I heard her voice crack a little.Beatrice laughs. She gives a mocking laugh, almost like she didn't believe what she was hearing."Guilt trip?" she asks, tak
