Elena's POVCassian woke while I happened to be away. The doctors had just finished dressing his wound, and while he was still unconscious I went home to pack him a change of clothes. The call came from the hospital while I was at the house. Cassian himself had sent me nothing. He used to hate making me worry. Even stepping out while I was napping, he would leave a note first.Today my phone was silent, and I only knew he was awake because the hospital called. It puzzled me, but I didn't dwell on it.Maybe he was afraid I would rush back to him and be too upset to drive safely. When I got back to his floor and the elevator doors opened, the corridor was full of vampires I had never seen before. They had taken over the entire floor, watching everyone who passed with wary eyes. This was the edge of human territory. There was no reason for so many vampires to be here.Part of me found it strange and interesting. Part of me was uneasy.Cassian had never recovered his memory, and he rarely

Elena's POVI stood outside the door.Every part of me went cold at once. The husband who had sworn to love me all his life and to always be gentle with me was saying he would divorce me.Only because his memory had come back.I was so cold I almost believed I had misheard. Then what were the five years we had spent side by side every day?I didn't know how long I stood there.A memory from a long time ago surfaced. We had not been together long back then.I loved sneaking up and hugging him from behind.Cassian was a vampire, with far sharper senses than a human. So I never once succeeded. One time I took off my shoes, went around through the hallway, and crept up behind him.I had barely reached out before he turned and caught me in his arms.I smacked his shoulder in frustration."Did you peek?""No.""Then how did you know again?"Cassian looked down at me and smiled."If you're anywhere near me, I can feel you.""What if I'm in the next room, with a wall between us?""Of course I'

Elena's POVThe first time I saw Cassian, five years ago, he was lying under a tree at the edge of the forest. That tall body was curled up in the shade. My father and I were coming back from town that day.The car broke down partway, so we had to walk to the estate along the side road.I smelled blood, looked into the grass, and found him.His clothes were nearly soaked through with it.At first my father refused to take him home. Our family had been in decline for years. After my mother died there were only the two of us.We couldn't even afford to keep servants at the estate. If this vampire brought trouble with him, we had no way to handle it.Cassian couldn't even stand back then. But I begged my father until he brought him back. When he woke, he remembered his name and nothing else.I smiled and reassured him, "It's all right. You can stay at our house and heal."Once you're better, you can take your time remembering."That stay lasted five years. In the beginning Cassian was war

Elena's POVWhen I got home, my father was sitting in the living room waiting for me."How is Cassian?""He's awake."I bent to take off my shoes and tried to keep my voice ordinary."The doctors say there's nothing seriously wrong."My father was quiet for a moment, then asked me straight out, "He's got his memory back?"My hands stopped. I didn't know how to answer."Someone came asking me about it this afternoon."He sighed."News like that always travels fast, Elena. Don't try to keep it from me."I said nothing. He looked at me and said more gently, "They say he's the vampire prince's heir.""He is.""And they say Cassian is divorcing you to honor a betrothal that was arranged years ago."My hand tightened on the bag."His memory only just came back. He hasn't thought it through."My father didn't answer.I continued, "Once he's calmer, we'll talk again."He looked at me in silence for a long while."Elena."I knew what he wanted to say.Our family had come down in the world, and

Elena's POVWhen my father found out I was still going to the hospital, he finally said, "Elena, Cassian has his memory back now."I sat at the dinner table and said nothing. He looked at me and sighed."He's the vampire prince's heir. We were human nobility once, but that was a long time ago."And he was already betrothed before he lost his memory."I lowered my head and went on biting into my bread in silence. My father continued, "Have you considered that the two of you can't be together anymore?"And there's the fiancee."You don't know what they were to each other before."She may well have been the one he loved all along."That brought my head up."She wasn't."It came out fast.My father didn't argue.I looked down and said more quietly, "Cassian loves me, Dad. You don't need to worry about us. I'll have all of this sorted out soon."After I said it, I fell quiet too.The smile on my mouth had gone numb, and I didn't know what I was holding out for on my own.But stopping, actua

Elena's POVThe day I brought that invitation home, I could hardly do anything at all.I shut myself in my room with the curtains drawn. My father knocked twice.I couldn't sleep all night and didn't want to talk.I just lay there thinking over and over about that emptied hospital room.Cassian hadn't even told me he was leaving the hospital. But he had remembered to leave me an invitation to his engagement party.I badly wanted to stay hidden in that room, never go out again, never try to win him back again.By then I had grown almost numb to the pain.Sitting outside the hospital every day waiting for him.Being talked about.Being taken for a gold digger who couldn't bear to give up rank and money.Even when I mentioned the three miscarriages, when I spoke about the children we never had, there was nothing on Cassian's face but distaste. He thought the same as the rest of them: that I did everything only to cling to him and get more money out of him.Five years of showing him my who

Cassian's POVAfter the engagement party, I expected everything to go back to normal.Elena had finally agreed to the divorce. And she had stopped coming after me.I even felt relieved. For weeks she had camped at the hospital, refusing to divorce me no matter what, pretending nothing was wrong, refusing the settlement I offered.I knew she was hurting.I had no intention of changing my decision. With my memory back, my real life had returned to me.My position as the prince's heir, my family, the Council of Elders, and a betrothal settled long ago.Set against all of that, five years in the human world was nothing. To a vampire, five years is barely an instant.I had decided that I only fell in love with Elena because I had lost everything I was. When I opened my eyes I had nothing.I didn't know where I came from, where to go, or a single person in the world. There was only Elena, the concerned girl who appeared before me and saved my life. She looked after me, stayed with me, let me

Elena's POVAfter the divorce papers went out, I didn't see Cassian for a long time.By the time the lawyer came to the house for them, I had signed everywhere I needed to.He seemed surprised at how easy it was and stood in the living room confirming my decision twice."The settlement. You're certain you're giving up all of it?""I'm certain.""Lord Cassian's figure is very generous. It would keep you and your father comfortably for the rest of your lives.""I know."He wanted to say more, and I handed him the documents."I don't take money that isn't mine."If there was no love and no future left between us, then at the very least I would protect my father's dignity and my own.He had no choice but to take the papers and go.After the door closed I stood there for a while. My father came out of the study. He didn't ask whether I was all right. He just came over and took the pen I was still gripping out of my hand."Let's eat."I nodded.I cried that night anyway. Not the way I had be

Cassian's POVThe old wound flared for the first time while I was in a meeting with the Council of Elders. We were discussing territory boundaries that day.I had been working through papers for a long stretch when the strength went out of my leg.If I hadn't caught the edge of the table I would have lost my footing in front of all of them. The people beside me looked over at once."Lord Cassian?""It's nothing."I settled myself back in the chair. The meeting went on.For the next half hour my left leg stayed numb.A doctor was called in as soon as it ended. The results were not good. The wound the hunters left had never healed completely. The last accident had restored my memory, but it had also aggravated the damage from my old injury."You may lose strength intermittently."The doctor watched my face, hesitated, and said it anyway. "The headaches will also become more frequent.""How long until it heals?""That's hard to say."I frowned. "Will it affect how well I can move?"The do

Elena's POVHalf a year on, I rarely heard anything about Cassian. The family business had begun to pick up.My father and I renegotiated the leases on several shops, and with the extra money we bought a farm from someone. With more to do, I was meeting a lot of people every day. That was when Julian and I got to know each other. His family had a long-standing arrangement with ours. My father and his uncle used to handle it, and now the two of us had taken it over.In the beginning we talked about almost nothing but work.As we got more comfortable he would stay for a cup of tea afterward.Sometimes my father was there too and the three of us sat around talking about nothing in particular.Julian knew I had been divorced. He never asked about Cassian, and he never asked why.Once someone brought it up in front of him and put it unkindly, and he simply dropped the contract in his hand onto the table."That isn't what we're here to discuss, is it?"The person shut up, embarrassed. He did
