ANMELDENThe Betrayal
POV: Karol Kensington
"Pack your bags. You are leaving for his island today."
My mother’s voice was as cold as ice. She did not even look up from her computer.
I stood in the doorway of her big home office. I was so tired. I had not slept at all. I spent the whole night in my dark office, looking down at the black SUV parked outside in the rain. I hoped I could think of a plan to save our clinic without selling my soul to Ciro.
I was wrong.
I walked inside but did not sit down. "What is happening, Mother? The bank called me at six in the morning. We are totally out of money. The power company is going to cut off our lights."
"I know," my mother, Esperanza, said. She finally stopped typing and looked up. Her eyes were hard and completely blank. "That is why I fixed the problem. You are going to Villa Altamira tonight. Ciro will let us have our supplies as soon as you step foot on his island."
"No. I told you yesterday that I am not taking his deal. I will not be his prisoner just to pay your bills."
"You do not have a choice anymore," my mother snapped. She slammed her computer shut. The loud sound made me jump. "Our clinic is dying, Karol! We have no supplies. We have no money. You made this mess by going against protocol and saving him at the derby. Now you will fix it."
"I am your daughter," I whispered. My voice broke. My chest hurt so much it was hard to breathe. "I am a doctor. I am a person. I am not a thing you can trade to our enemy!"
Esperanza stood up. She walked slowly around her large desk. She stopped right in front of me.
"You are a tool for this business, Karol," she said smoothly. Her voice was terrifying. "And right now, you are the only tool that can pay our debts. If you say no to Ciro, I will ruin you."
I stared at her, totally shocked. The room started to spin. "What?"
"I am on the national medical board," my mother whispered. "If you do not get in his car today, I will call the board myself and tell them you hurt Ciro's knee on purpose. I will take away your doctor's license. You will never treat a patient again."
My own mother. She did not care about my hard work or my dreams. She only cared about the money and the family name. She was ready to destroy my life to save her business.
I stepped back, shaking my head. I looked down at her desk because I could not look at her cruel face anymore.
That was when I saw it.
A thick blue folder was open on her desk. The paper inside had a big black logo at the top: Restrepo Conglomerate.
I pushed past her and grabbed the folder.
"Put that down, Karol!" my mother yelled. Her face turned red with panic.
But I was already reading the bold words on the paper. Private Care and Work Contract.
It was a legal paper giving Ciro full control of me. It forced me to live at his private house for a whole year. It meant he owned me.
I turned to the last page. There, at the bottom of the page, was my signature.
But I never signed this.
I stared at the blue ink. It looked exactly like my handwriting. Every letter was copied perfectly.
"You faked my signature," I whispered. My hands shook so badly the papers rattled in the quiet room. "You signed my life away to a monster, and you did not even tell me."
"I did what I had to do to save us!" Esperanza shouted. She tried to grab the papers, but I stepped back out of her reach. "The deal is done, Karol! The lawyers filed it a few hours ago. Its just a one year contract!"
I looked at the woman who gave birth to me. Finally, I saw the ugly truth. I was bleeding for a family that did not care about me at all. My sister Valeria wanted to ruin me in secret, and my own mother just sold me for money in broad daylight.
I dropped the fake papers. They fell all over the floor.
"I have no family," I said. My voice was dead and empty.
I turned around and ran out of her office. I did not listen to her screaming my name. I ran down the stairs, my heart beating very fast. I pushed through the front glass doors of the clinic and stepped out into the cold morning air.
The big, black SUV was still parked by the sidewalk. The engine purred quietly.
As I walked toward it, the heavy back door slowly opeNed.
POV: KarolSomeone in the hallway was pushing the door open. They were very strong.Ciro moved fast. The deep, burning heat in his eyes turned cold. He dropped my hand, grabbed my waist, and pulled me hard behind his back."Stay behind me," he ordered. His voice was firm. The heart monitor on his chest beeped fast and loud. But Ciro did not look scared. He looked ready to kill. He sat up, ignoring his bad knee. He grabbed a heavy metal tray filled with massage oils and tools. The space in the doorway grew wider. A black leather glove pushed the heavy desk away like it was nothing. Then, a man stepped into the room.He wore a dark, wet raincoat and a black mask. Rainwater dripped onto the clean floor. He held a black gun with a long silencer in his right hand.I stopped breathing. The man pointed the gun straight at Ciro’s chest. Before the killer could shoot, Ciro yelled and threw the metal tray with all his might. It hit the man right in the face. Glass bottles broke. Warm oil splash
The First SessionPOV: Karol Kensington"Get behind me!" Ciro yelled in the dark. His strong arm grabbed my hands and my waist. I quickly ran to his back and held my breath; I was scared to death. Then, the light came on. The bright white lights of the medical room flashed back on.I blinked and looked at the door. It wasn't the killer. It was Mateo. He was dragging a heavy steel desk across the hallway floor to block the door."Sorry, boss," Mateo was breathing hard, wiping rain from his face. "The power line was cut. I just put on the generator; I am blocking this wing. No one is getting in."I let out a breath and stepped away from Ciro. The killer was still out there in the storm, but we are locked inside."It is time," I said. My voice was cold and professional. "Get on the table."Ciro did not argue. He wheeled himself to the therapy table and lifted himself up using his strong arms.I grabbed a small black box with wires."What is that?" Ciro asked, watching me closely."A hear
Setting the BoundariesPOV: Karol Kensington"Lock down every single door in this house right now!" Ciro roared."I already did, boss," Mateo said quickly. He wiped the blood off his hand with a white towel. "The storm shutters are down. The heavy steel doors are locked. But the cameras are useless in this heavy rain. We are totally blind outside.""Then we wait for him to try and get in," Ciro ordered. "Put guards at every window. No one sleeps tonight."Mateo nodded and left. The heavy glass doors slid shut behind him, locking with a loud click.I stood in the middle of the room, shaking. My stomach felt sick. A man had tried to shoot me at the airport, now my old work badge is covered in blood. It was a message. He was here, on the island, and he was hunting me."Karol."Ciro’s voice was softer now. He rolled his wheelchair closer to me. I could see the worry hiding behind his dark, angry eyes. He reached out to grab my shaking hands.I stepped back before he could touch me.If I l
Welcome to Villa AltamiraPOV: Karol KensingtonStay in the car, and keep your head down," Mateo ordered. The rain fell so hard I could barely see. The storm had finally hit the island. The wind howled like an angry animal and shook the car.Mateo and three guards jumped out into the cold rain. They pulled out their guns. Some went inside first to make sure the house was safe. They had to find the stranger from the speed boat.Ten minutes passed. Finally, the huge front doors opened. A guard waved for us to come inside.Ciro opened the car door, with the support of his staff, we ran through the rain, up the stone steps and went inside the house. As heavy doors slammed shut behind, The loud noise of the storm instantly went away.I stopped and stared. Villa Altamira was beautiful, but it was scary. The floors were shiny black stone. The ceilings were very high. One whole wall was made of glass. Through the glass, I could see dark, angry waves crashing against the rocks far below. Every
Descent to the Rosario IslandsPOV: Karol KensingtonA loud gunshot cut through the noise of the plane. Before I could even scream, a big hand grabbed my sweater. Mateo pulled me down to the floor. His huge body covered mine completely. He hid me from the open door to keep me safe."Go! Go! Go!" He yelled.Outside, I heard two more loud pops. Mateo was shooting back. A second later, everyone was inside the plane, and the pilot hit a big red button on the wall. The metal stairs folded up, and the heavy door slammed shut. The plane did not wait for us to sit. It shot down the runway and flew straight up into the sky.I lay flat on the floor. My heart was beating so fast I could not breathe. My hands shook badly. Someone had just tried to shoot me."Karol." Ciro’s deep voice was right next to my ear. His hands moved all over my arms and back, checking me. "Are you hurt? Did the bullet hit you?""No," I gasped. I looked up into his wild, hot eyes. "I am okay."Ciro let out a heavy breath.
POV: Karol KensingtonMateo’s voice was low in the quiet room. We had hidden in a safe house since the car chase."We have ten minutes. The sun is coming up, and the reporters will be awake soon. We need to leave now."I didn't get enough sleep last night; I was thinking about a lot of things. I stood up and wore a plain black sweater and jeans that Ciro provided for me. I opened the door."I am ready," I said. My voice sounded flat.Mateo checked the hallway and told me to follow him.We walked down the back stairs and out into the cool morning air. The rain had stopped. The armored SUV was waiting in an alley. The engine was already running.I got into the back seat. This time, I was alone. Ciro had left earlier, according to Mateo, to handle somethings.Mateo hit the gas. We drove onto the empty highway.I rested my head against the window. I watched the sun come up over Medellín. The sky turned a pretty blue behind the dark green mountains. It was the most beautiful city in the wo
