Elyra’s POVI sat in the auditorium with my spine straight and my hands on my lap, conscious of the gap between my shoulder and Kaelen's. Since we were seated, neither of us had spoken. We both wouldn't.Mr. Halden was at the podium, making adjustments to his glasses as he prepared to address the packed room of students, coaches and both hockey teams. “As most of you are aware, it's the annual mating season,” he started. “ but before that there is inter-gender hickejy championship, and after it the academy will officially start its holiday period.”The crowd was filled with excitement. There was someone behind me who whistled.“But we are all gathered here not to teach you the importance of mates, or reading your books during the holidays," Mr. Halden continued, "the academy expects both hockey teams to remember, failure and losing are not accepted in this academy’s vocabulary.”I looked up at the banner above the stage, ACADEMIES CHAMPIONSHIP, HOSTED HERE and my heart raced.Mr. Ha

Elyra’s POVI held on to the resistance bands even tighter, doing another rep, the muscles still hurting from the game the night before. But I knew, Kaelen would smoke me the next time we meet on the ice. Sweat dripped down my temple as I pushed through my last set, counting under my breath.“Ten more,” I mumbled to myself. "Nine. Eight."I was so concentrating on my form that I didn't realize that there was a young lady standing a few feet away watching me. I completed my set and released the band from my hand, and faced her."May I assist you in anything? I asked, rubbing the back of my wrist on my forehead.“The name is Veyra Soren," she said. "I'm Darian's girlfriend."I blinked at her. "I'm sorry, what?""Darian," she repeated. "I'm his girlfriend."I placed the resistance band on the bench next to me, and said, "There's some kind of mistake. I'm Darian's girlfriend."There was some recognition on Veyra's face, not surprise, but confirmation of something she already knew in her

Elyra’s POV I gazed into the eyes of my best friend, suddenly feeling wide-awake after having felt very sleepy only a few moments ago.“Regarding Kaelen?” I asked. She nodded silently.I shoved the blankets off and sat upright in bed. “What happened?”She seemed awkward; she didn’t know if she ought to tell me or not. “I saw him in the hospital yesterday.”Confusion etched into my features. “In the hospital?”“Yes.” She spoke quietly. “I was visiting my mother in the hospital, and I saw him there; he was with a doctor, and he didn’t look well.”I recalled Kaelen standing in the pouring rain, the anger that radiated out of him when I asked how he was doing. “How did he look?”"I don't know. He looked pale, and he was clutching his chest. I wanted to ask him what was happening, but he left before I could talk to him." She answered, fiddling with her fingers.I looked at my hands.I had sensed that something wasn't quite right with him, too, but I had ignored it since I didn't think it

Kaelen's Point of ViewThe phone remained in my hands ringing persistently. The very second I spotted the letter "V" flashing across the screen, the little bit of warmth in me faded. She was still standing a few yards from me, observing me carefully."Who is it?" Elyra asked.I glanced at her and immediately made a stern expression. "No one," I said sharply. Her brows furrowed. "Then why do you look so serious staring at your phone?""It's not your concern."I didn't even bother to reply back to her. I moved past her, grabbed my phone from my pocket and made my way toward the front door."Where are you going?" she yelled from behind me."I need privacy," I responded without turning back.I stepped out of the door and made my way toward my car.It wasn't hard to feel the cool breeze brushing against my skin, however, I barely paid any attention to it. I went straight to my car, sat in it and locked it.The second I sat down, I picked up the phone. "What?"Veyra’s voice came right away.

Elyra's POV As I left the final class of the day, with my bag over one shoulder, my phone started buzzing in my pocket.I reached into my pocket to pull out my phone, and read the text on it."Come to the ice rink. Right now." Coach Iris.I frowned at the text message. Something about this message just doesn’t feel right. I replied to her: "Everything okay?"There was no response.I looked at the phone for a second, then put the phone back into my pocket and went towards the ice rink. The walk there seemed longer than it usually would. I could only think of different reasons why she wanted to see me there. As I entered through the doors of the rink, I saw Coach Iris standing by the boards, hands on hips, face serious."Coach," I called, approaching her. "Do you need to see me?""Have you told anyone about your meeting with Ronan Vale?" she demanded straight off."What?" I exclaimed, confused."Did you or did you not tell anyone about your meeting?" she repeated, stern."No," I said.
