The weather is a bit too chilly, and snow has covered most of the roads, but there is no way I am going to miss this dinner, not in this lifetime. It is my birthday, and for the first time since Sam and I started dating, he has planned something for me. Sam has never been the type to plan dates or do most of the romantic things men do for the women they love, and that is one of the reasons Clare has never liked him. She has always complained about how little effort he puts into our relationship and would constantly tell me to leave him, but there was no way I was going to do that. Not when I had had a crush on Sam since high school and had spent years hoping that one day, he would finally become the kind of man I knew he could be. Maybe that day has finally come. Chapter 2.

I slip the orange gown on, wanting something that would accentuate every detail of my body, and this dress is doing exactly that. I smile at myself in the mirror as my hands brush over the fabric, admiring the way it falls against my body.I sit on my dressing chair and slick my hair back into a neat bun before applying my makeup, keeping it simple enough to let the dress and jewelry do most of the work.I have only an hour left before Sam gets here, and I don't want to keep him waiting.“Sophy…”I turn toward Clare. Chapter 3.

The tears keep flowing freely, refusing to stop. I know I have to pull myself together, but the pain is unbearable, and no matter how hard I try, I just can't. Where did things go wrong? My phone soon starts ringing, and I immediately sit up, hoping it is him. Maybe he has realized that he made a mistake. Maybe he has had enough time to calm down and has called to take back everything he said. My hands scramble through the things in my bag until they finally find my phone, but when I look at the screen, my heart sinks. It isn't him. It's Clare. I wipe my face with the back of my palm before swiping to answer the call. “Girl, where are you? Do you know how worried I am?” Her voice comes through the phone, and the moment I hear it, whatever little control I had left disappears. The words refuse to come out of my mouth. Instead, I burst into another round of tears. “Are you okay? What happened?” “Sophy, say something!” “He ended things.” My voice breaks as I struggle to speak.

Chapter 4.

He remains still, his face filled with complete shock and a hint of anger. “I’m sorry, sir.” “I’m extremely sorry, sir.” “She’s sorry, sir.” Mr. Festus, my CEO, joins in, pleading on my behalf. My eyes move from him to my boss, and the stern look on his face says it all. Oh my God. Unfortunate things have just been happening to me lately. What do I do now? “Sir, please, let me help you get it dry-cleaned. I can get you a new one—” “It’s fine. Just show me to the restroom.” He turns to his secretary. “Get me the spare shirt from the car.” His secretary immediately turns and leaves, and I quickly lead Mr. Sinclair toward the restroom. A few minutes later, he walks out with his shirt changed, and I have to force myself to keep my eyes on his face. Shit. Look at those arms. Chapter 5.

A scoff of disbelief leaves me.“Why would you marry me? You don't even know anything about me.”I stare at him, waiting for an explanation that will make any of this sound remotely reasonable, but he remains completely composed, sitting on the couch as though proposing marriage to a woman he barely knows is just another business decision that needs to be discussed and finalized.“Well, I think I know everything I need to know about you,” he begins, his voice calm. “This marriage isn't something that's going to be built on love. I don't need love. Chapter 6.

He exhales softly before his voice comes through the other end. “Are you certain this is what you want? There’s no pressure. I’m willing to wait until you’ve decided, and I’ll accept whatever your decision is.” The way he speaks, so careful with every word, makes me feel like he knows. He knows I should take more time to think this through because right now my mind is clouded with too many thoughts, too many emotions, and I don't trust myself to separate what I truly want from what I want because of what I just saw. “I’ll marry you. I’ll do it.” I repeat for the third time, forcing the words out again, as though saying them enough times will finally make them feel certain about it. “Fine. Come to the office by ten tomorrow. Let’s discuss everything properly and see if you’d like any adjustments made before signing,” he says evenly. “I’m on my way to your office now. We’ll discuss it when I get there.” Before he can say anything else, I end the call and gently slip my phone

Chapter 7.

“Done. So what next?”He draws closer, his voice calm. “We’ll go to the county clerk, get the marriage finalized, then we’ll move in together and live as man and wife.”“Today?”“Yes. Everything has been arranged. The license has been approved. It’ll be a private civil ceremony.”“After that, Henry will take you home, help you pack your things, and bring everything to the estate. We’ll be staying with the rest of the family.”But we just got married.“Wait, I thought we’d at least live together for a while first. Isn’t it too soon? The County Clerk’s Office looks nothing like a place where people come to get married.The large government building rises ahead of us, its faded beige walls and rows of dark windows looking more like an office where people come to settle paperwork than a place where two people begin a life together. Cars fill the concrete parking structure beside the building, while people move in and out of the entrance with folders, envelopes, and tired expressions.A few people stand outside smoking, while others hurry across the plaza with their eyes fixed on their phones. Chapter 9.

My entire body goes still. Sam. What is he doing here? I stare at the man as he closes the car door. No. It can't be. My heart pounds faster as I look at him more closely. The dark hair. NICHOLAS.A pile of emails to respond to, meetings to attend, documents to sign.
