CHAPTER ONE DEMIN The first thing that Demin notices about Ravenclaw every morning is the silence. It doesn't last for long though, as beyond the tall windows of the Alpha Palace, the village of Ravenwood stretches out beneath the pale morning mist, ancient trees posting sentry around the pack territory. By sunrise, it would be bustling with life, shops would open their doors, warriors would head for the Iron Grounds, and kids would scamper up and down the streets while their parents chased after them. CHAPTER THREE REIN By the time Rein arrived at the Alpha Palace the sun had already begun to set behind the trees leaving a warm golden glow across the great expanse of the structure. She slowed as she approached its entrance, taking it in properly for the first time. It was even more than she had remembered. The palace had always seemed impossibly huge to her when she was young, but after months away from Ravenclaw, everything seemed to dwarf her now. The tall windows caught the fading light while the dark stone walls gave the place an imposing feel that made Rein straighten her back without thinking. She adjusted the strap of her camera bag and took one more breath before stepping inside. She had imagined this moment dozens of times throughout her travels. She would knock Truz would open the door and it took him a few seconds to realize who it was before he would laugh at her. CHAPTER FIVE DEMIN Demin had been up since before dawn. Sleep had been eluding him lately. It came when it wanted to, not much more. It left him with long stretches of silence in which every sound in the palace seemed impossibly distant and magnified. Demin leaned against the balcony of his apartment, staring out toward Ravenwood as the sky began to lighten. The forest was silent. Demin's fingers curled around the balcony railing. There was something in the distance, something moving behind the trees. He couldn't see it. He didn't need to. His wolf had seen it. The strange sound that had come from somewhere deep inside the trees was repeated once more. Then, somewhere farther away, a bird's cry. Demin's eyes narrowed. For a long moment, the world seemed to sharpen around him.
