LOGINCHAPTER TWO
REIN Rein had forgotten how much Ravenclaw smelled like home. The moment the car passed the border, she leaned down the window, letting the cooling air rush against her face. It was the scent of the forest, something she had felt familiar with since she could remember. Maybe the trees Maybe the pack Or maybe the feeling as if she had returned to something that had belonged to her. She smiled. She was home. Not permanently. Three months. That was all she had planned to spend in Ravenclaw before returning to the life she had created for herself outside the pack. She had left Ravenclaw because she wanted to experience life outside the place where everyone knew her name. She wanted to work, build her photography and videography career, meet people who knew her for herself and discover who she was without constantly being introduced as Truz's younger sister She had not left because she did not like Ravenclaw, more like she had missed it more than she liked to admit. Especially her brother. Her phone buzzed in her hand. A message from one of her clients popped up on the screen. Did you get there safely? Rein smiled as she typed a reply. Yes. Finally, home. She slipped her phone into her bag and looked out of the window again, the Alpha Palace was waiting for her, but Truz did not know she was coming. That was the best part. She had decided to stay somewhere on the outskirts for a few days before showing up in the palace, she wanted to surprise him. Knowing her brother, he would probably stare at her for five seconds before deciding if he was going to yell at her or hug her. She was betting on both. The car eventually stopped near the small apartment she had rented before traveling. Rein paid the driver, pulled her luggage from the trunk, and stood there for a moment, taking everything in. The surroundings had changed. Not completely, but enough for her to notice. There were new shops along the road, a few restaurants she did not remember and more people moving around than she expected. She adjusted the strap of her camera bag and smiled. Maybe three months would not be enough. By late afternoon, Rein had unpacked and decided to explore, she took her camera with her, partly because she wanted to photograph Ravenclaw again, and partly because she had never gone anywhere without it for long. She had always loved finding beauty in the ordinary things. A woman arranging flowers outside her shop Two children racing each other down the road An old man sitting beneath a tree, watching the world move around him Click. Click. She checked the pictures on her camera and smiled. Some things had not changed at all. Looking around as she walked, she was suddenly faced with a group of people gathered outside a small restaurant. Their conversation was not particularly interesting to her. Until she heard a name. "Truz." Rein slowed. She had not intended to listen, but hearing her brother's name after years away made her curious. "He's one of the Shivers Brothers ," a man said. Another laughed. "You say that like it's something to be proud of." Rein frowned. The first man shrugged. "I'm just saying. You don't want to have problems with those four." "Especially Demin." Rein stopped walking. Demin. She knew him. At least, she remembered him. Truz had practically grown up with those three boys. Demin. She remembered him as one of the quieter boys, who had always been somewhere around her brother. But the way these strangers spoke about them made her wonder if they were talking about the same people. "What did they actually do?" someone asked. "Nothing you need to find out for yourself." The group laughed. Rein shook her head and continued walking. Apparently, the Ravenclaw she had remembered was not the Ravenclaw she had returned to. She had known the boys as Truz's friends. They were the Shivers Brothers in Ravenclaw. And according to the conversation she had just overheard, that name had significantly more weight than it used to. Rein stopped by a small café a little later, deciding she needed something to eat before heading back. She had just picked up her drink when someone bumped lightly into her shoulder. "Oh, I'm sorry." Rein turned. The woman standing in front of her seemed about her age and had a surprised look on her face. "It's okay," Rein said. The woman glanced at the camera hanging from her shoulder. "You're a photographer?" "Yeah, among other things." She smiled. "That's actually really cool. I actually love photography, too." Rein laughed. "Really? Thanks." "You're new around here, aren't you?" Rein smiled. "Just got back." The woman looked curious but did not press. "I'm Kiara." "Rein." They shook hands. Something about the conversation flowed easily after that. They talked about the changes around Ravenclaw, places to eat, photography, and the ridiculous price of almost everything. Their conversation was simple. By the time Rein finished her drink, she was smiling. "You should show me some of your work sometime," Kiara said. "I'd like that." "Well, if you're staying for a while, you're going to need someone to show you around." "Are you volunteering? Rein asked. "Maybe. Give me your contact information first. Then we will talk better." Rein handed over her phone. When Kiara was done saving her contact, Rein noticed the name. Kiara. For some reason, she had a feeling she would be seeing her again. They said goodbye outside the café, and Rein watched her walk away before turning around towards the apartment. The sun was already beginning to set behind the trees. She smiled to herself. Tomorrow. Tomorrow, she would finally be going home. And Truz had absolutely no idea she was coming.Chapter nineREINBy late afternoon, Rein had tired of the palace. There was only so long she could spend wandering the unfamiliar halls before she felt uncomfortably intruding on her own home. With a sigh, she grabbed her bag, slipped her camera inside, and exited without informing Truz of her intentions. She only wanted something to drink, and a few hours where no one would question her about the Moonbound Trials, her wolf, or whether she was enjoying her return. The little stand near the village square was always one of her favourite haunts. Unremarkable from the outside, with a small wooden building and a handful of tables beneath the faded canopy, the owner made the best fruit drinks in Ravenclaw.Rein ordered a chilled pineapple drink as she settled at a nearby seat, just barely within the shade of the canopy. She had just taken two sips when a familiar voice spoke from behind."I knew I'd find you here.''Rein turned.Kiara stood behind the seat, offering a small smile as
Chapter Eight DEMINDemin and Kanem rejoined just before noon at Waseber's office; the Alpha slouched at his desk, going through a stack of reports that had no doubt been waiting for him. He looked up as they approached, Demin striding forward, Kanem staying by the door, stretching a sore shoulder after the long patrol."The patrols have been doubled," Demin reported. "No other signs after following the tracks, but whoever it was came to a halt just before the second marker."Waseber gave a nod and set the paper down. "Keep the north watch standing tonight. I don't want anyone to think the issue is over just because they didn't return.""I'll talk to the leader."Waseber reached for another paper, but instead of handing it to Demin, he laid it flat on the desk."The council confirmed the date for the Moonbound Trials."Kanem straightened."Already?""Three weeks from now."Kanem let out a long sigh. "That's not much time.""You were moaning last month that they were draggi
Chapter sevenREINThe village was exactly as Rein remembered it, only busier.Truz walked beside her as they walked the market street, stopping to chat every few feet. Some stopped him to ask about increased patrols, others called out his name to wave as they passed, and Rein found herself smiling as he swept from one conversation to the next. He always had been popular in Ravenclaw. Everyone knew him, trusted him, and somehow, always found a reason to talk to him.Rein raised her camera again, the lens capturing the dozens of wooden stalls and the smiling women arranging fresh vegetables. She watched a small boy struggle to carry a basket twice his size before pausing to snap another picture."You're going to fill that memory card before we even get home," Truz said with a smirk. She lowered the camera and studied him. "Then I'll buy another one.""With what money?""I'll figure that out later."Truz chuckled and shook his head. "You really haven't changed.""I was hoping yo
Chapter sixREINBy the time Rein realized she had taken the wrong turn, she had already walked past three corridors that she didn't remember and found herself on the western side of the palace. She stopped beside an open archway and peered out, searching for something she recognized."This place certainly wasn't here before."A servant passed her, carrying bundled linens, and didn't give her a second glance, somehow, that made Rein feel less ashamed of her predicament. If no one was stopping her, then clearly she wasn't as lost as she was beginning to believe. She walked cautiously down the corridor, her footsteps blending with the sounds of the palace around her, until she caught the sound of a few murmured voices drifting from somewhere beyond the courtyard.Curiosity got the better of her,Rein moved closer to the archway and peered out and down the length of the courtyard.Demin stood in the center of the courtyard. Two guards stood a few feet behind him, and a young wolf
CHAPTER FIVE DEMIN Demin had been up since before dawn. Sleep had been eluding him lately. It came when it wanted to, not much more. It left him with long stretches of silence in which every sound in the palace seemed impossibly distant and magnified. Demin leaned against the balcony of his apartment, staring out toward Ravenwood as the sky began to lighten. The forest was silent. Demin's fingers curled around the balcony railing. There was something in the distance, something moving behind the trees. He couldn't see it. He didn't need to. His wolf had seen it. The strange sound that had come from somewhere deep inside the trees was repeated once more. Then, somewhere farther away, a bird's cry. Demin's eyes narrowed. For a long moment, the world seemed to sharpen around him. He could hear the rustling of leaves, the hush of animals moving beyond the trees edge, the distant swish of bare feet against the ground many miles from the palace. The sounds ceased. Demi
CHAPTER FOUR REIN Rein woke to the sound of birds outside her window and, for a few seconds, forgot where she was in the world. The room was unfamiliar in the way all good places were. Everything had been placed so beautifully that it seemed untouched. The bed was neatly made, the curtains swayed gently with the morning breeze, and the balcony overlooked a part of the palace grounds through the glass doors. It was then that she remembered. She was home. After years of living far away from Ravenclaw, she was back under the same roof as her brother again. A small smile appeared on her lips. She reached for her camera on the table beside the bed and glanced at the photographs she had managed to take the previous evening. Ravenwood had appeared differently through her lens. Perhaps it was because she was looking at it as an adult now, or perhaps distance had taught her to appreciate things. She had forgotten over the years. Rein went downstairs and into the dining room.
