Chapter 1

That was when Lumi White finally remembered me, her bridegroom. There was pain in her eyes as she looked into my bloodshot eyes, the cuts and bruises on my wrists, and the rags that were my tuxedo. When she hurried to me, however, Sirius Lynch stopped her and said, "If you let him win today, you'll have to let him win his whole life. As your bestie, I need to enforce your position in the family!"Lumi looked hesitant but stopped.Sirius then grinned as he walked up to me, clapping my shoulder forcefully. "Oh, don't worry—I am not interested in your house at all. The house Lumi bought me is way bigger."It's just a game anyway—just look, everyone's laughing themselves silly. If you want to marry into the White family, the most important part is your guts."I quietly looked at Lumi, who stood behind Sirius in silence.Suddenly, I started to laugh so hard that I was shaking. These games had never stopped since I started dating Lumi.During my freshman year, I was at a track meet

I didn't mind losing the ring, but that pendant was my grandfather's only keepsake, and I must take it back.As for Lumi, she finally panicked when she realized I was serious about calling off the wedding and grabbed Sirius' arm. "That's enough. Give it up!"Sirius pursed his lips as he grumpily reached into his pocket for the ring and pendant, complaining, "To think you'd snap at me over some nobody. Who matters to you more these days? There."As he threw both the pendant and ring at Lumi like it was trash, he made sure to miss Lumi. She scrambled to catch it but missed, and the pendant shattered into pieces on the floor.Seeing that, Sirius shrugged nonchalantly. "I've been meaning to tell you that it's cheap crap. I mean, how hilarious that it's a keepsake? Well, it's good that it's broken. I can buy you a nicer one as a gift for your wedding… Lumi even called me daddy in bed, so how about that, 'son'?"I wasn't bothered by Sirius' insults, as I kept staring at the pieces on t

Chapter 3

That very night, I packed all my belongings from the new house and moved to my office's employee quarters.Lumi must have called me a hundred times, but I never answered—I was serious about cutting ties with her and her clique. One day, Zac suddenly sent me a video of Lumi lying on a hospital bed, heavily bandaged but still bleeding.Bawling, Zac told me, "Help! Lumi chased after you in her car when you left the wedding, but her brakes were broken and she crashed! She's dying!"To make things worse, my parents are facing trouble in business, and their credit cards are frozen! Can you foot Lumi's medical bill for now? We will pay you back in the future!"My tears gushed uncontrollably upon seeing Lumi hurt. "Alright, just calm down! I'll send you the money right now!"I had an accident as a sophomore too and was admitted to the ICU.They were short on my blood, but Lumi luckily had my blood type and gave me almost 30 ounces of her blood, saving me from the brink of death. It rea

At our new house, Lumi had her head on Sirius' lap as they watched TV.When she saw me, she didn't even get up. She merely glanced at me once before turning away. On the other hand, Sirius' eyes lit up, and he excitedly pinched Lumi's cheek. "Pay up! I told you he'd come to apologize in just a day."I glared coldly at him. "I didn't come to apologize. I want my money back—now!"Sirius raised a brow and pointed at the kennel by the way. "What, that $20,000? Got a kennel for my dog. It's Hermes too. Do you like it?"My blood froze as I looked at it.That money was all my savings I had for five years. As the lot for my grandfather's ashes urn was rented, there was always the risk of the lot being taken back.I worked hard for that so he could rest in peace, only for Sirius to buy his dog a kennel with that money! On the other hand, my grandfather's remains would be left adrift without a proper resting place! And for what?!Hatred swelling in my chest, I dashed straight up to

Third-person POVHarry Smith, the leading officer, barked, "Man down! He's losing a lot of blood and has just passed out! Tom, Dick! Get him to the hospital, stat!"As the two officers who were summoned gingerly carried Hal outside, Lumi bellowed frantically, "Let go of him! What are you doing to him?!"As she stood in Tom and Dick's way, Harry watched her freak out, giving her the once over and laughed despite himself. "We're the police! It's our duty to protect and serve! Go, Tom and Dick! Don't let her waste your time! The rest of you, arrest those two!"And with that, Sirius and Lumi were both taken to the precinct, with Harry himself interrogating Lumi. "Hal Zimmer called, saying he was a victim of criminal fraud, with you and Sirius Lynch being responsible."We only expected some form of dispute, only to encounter attempted murder… Now, feel free to elaborate. Who is Hal Zimmer to you? Why did you steal his money? And why did you try to kill him?!""No I didn't!" Lumi excla

Third-person POVHarry simply glared at Lumi and remained businesslike. "It's too late for regrets now. The law is fair to one and all, so this will be processed as it should."However, the police eventually treated the case as a domestic case considering my relationship with Lumi. After returning the twenty grand, Lumi and Sirius were remanded for three days before they were released. For once, she didn't go straight to Sirius after being released. Instead, she bought me my favorite food and rushed over to the hospital."Hal! See what I brought you!" she chirped happily as she opened the door, only to find herself staring at a patient she didn't know. She promptly grabbed the nearest nurse doing rounds, bellowing, "Where is Hal Zimmer?!"The poor nurse cringed in fear, her tears welling up in her eyes as she responded, "As in… Mr. Zimmer? He was discharged the same day he was admitted…"Lumi released her and promptly called Hal, only for a red exclamation mark to flash right a

Lumi's eyes were wide with disbelief as she finally understood why Hal snapped and was ready to kill Sirius. He must have found out about his grandfather!Forget Hal—she wanted Sirius dead for this! She had tolerated Sirius' pranks since they grew up together, and she presumed he was just being childish but never mean-spirited.She had never expected Sirius to go this far! How could Sirius be so vile, hurting Hal's late grandfather who had died so many years ago?!After she drove to Sirius, Sirius hurried to her, holding her cheeks in his palms as he frowned angrily. "Damn it, Lumi. I was locked up for three days, but you went straight to Hal once you were released? Where's the camaraderie?"Lumi frowned too and shook his hands off in annoyance. In the past, Hal had always jealously told her that she and Sirius were way too chummy and didn't have a sense of distance. She thought nothing of it, even thinking that Hal was being overbearing—she and Sirius had grown up together,

Lumi wasted no time shoving the receipt at his face. "I gave you everything you ever wanted! Why'd you have to steal Mr. Zimmer's grave too?!"Sirius closed his eyes, seemingly fighting back some swelling emotion. So Lumi knew everything he had done now… But didn't that also mean he could stop pretending? He didn't have to be the big-hearted man who always played it cool and definitely didn't have to lie that he never loved her. Those words and feelings were bottled up for so long, but he could finally say them to Lumi now.Not holding back at all, Sirius' eyes turned red as he roared, "Did you really give me everything I ever wanted?! I love you and I want to believe you, but you'd always give me that skeptical look! Treating me like a bestie and not a man! Playing off every confession as a joke!"I've stayed by your side for 21 years, but he's met you not more than a few years ago! He has no right to take you from me! And if he doesn't know his place, why can't I defend my righ

Hal's POVMeanwhile, I was living abroad for almost three months before I knew it.Everything and every face was new to me, but I didn't feel lonely—if anything, I enjoyed my life now.I'd be either at campus, the dining hall, or the dorms while I focused entirely on my physics research. Most of all, I didn't have to keep worrying about a certain clique's endless pranks. And it was wonderful. But one day, I was on my way back from the library when I bumped into a person.I was just about to apologize when I felt her arms wrapping around me.As I turned in panic, thinking I'd run into a molester, I realized it was Lumi. She had chased me all the way here!-It had only been three months, but she lost so much weight that she looked like a completely different person.Where she used to have the wind in her stride, she now looked horrible—her eyes were sunken like she had not slept for the longest time, and there were actually wrinkles on her face. Her voice was hoarse as she

Chapter 10

The hope in Lumi's eyes faded as she stood there, staring blankly like a lifeless husk.As I turned to leave, Lumi cut me off again. "I know what Sirius did to your grandfather now. My people had to look for a while, but we got your grandfather's ashes back. I therefore bought a plot for him at a coastal grave at South Joven."I felt a pang of emotion but soon calmed down. "Just give me the address. I'll head back in a few days to get my grandpa's ashes, because I refuse to let a sworn enemy bury him. I will work hard on my own to get him a safe final resting place."I hope this will be the last time I see you, Lumi. Bother me again, and I'm calling the cops right away."With that, I turned and started to leave again. "Hal…" She said my name once last time, her eyes glinting with myriad emotions. Her lips parted, but she couldn't speak her mind.Hanging her head, all she could muster was, "Sorry…"-Life returned to normal after Lumi left.As for me, three years passed qui
