Chapter 1

"Mr. Hank Goodman, this is Curtis Snyder from HR at Westbrook Holdings. We've found serious discrepancies on your resume, so we're rescinding your job offer."The HR representative hung up before I could ask what he meant. I stared at my phone, my jaw tightening.I founded Westbrook Holdings during my sophomore year. To keep a low profile and finish college without drawing attention, I put our CEO, Emily Peterson, in charge of running the company while I stayed behind the scenes as its majority shareholder.Since then, Westbrook Holdings grew into an established company with formal hiring procedures. HR shouldn't have rescinded an offer without first looking into the allegations. The dorm room door swung open. George Owens walked in, pretending to look concerned."Hank, HR just told me they pulled your offer. Is that true?"He sighed and walked over to my desk. "You get such good grades. Why would you lie on your resume? You know this could ruin your career, right?"The room w

After sending the message, I opened my laptop. When I answered the call earlier, I noticed the screen was on, even though I left it in sleep mode.I checked the activity logs. Someone had connected a USB drive and copied my senior project, an AI model I spent three months developing.I looked over at George, who was playing a game on his phone. "You went through my laptop and stole my senior project."His fingers paused. Then he slapped his phone down and turned to me without a trace of concern."You'd better have proof before you start accusing me of stealing. Westbrook Holdings already caught you lying. For all I know, you copied that whole project from someone else. Good luck getting the department to sign off on it."He lifted his chin. "I only took a copy because I thought I could improve it. And now they're considering my version for this year's Outstanding Senior Project Award."He leaned closer and lowered his voice. "That's not even the best part. The VP of R&D at We

The day before the career fair, George brought Julia to campus and made sure everyone saw them together. Students quickly gathered around them, hoping to make a good impression.Wade rushed over before anyone else, nearly stumbling in his eagerness to greet George and Julia. I stayed at the edge of the crowd and watched.Julia enjoyed the attention. She looked around the group until she spotted me, and George immediately leaned in to whisper in her ear.She walked over and gave me a dismissive look."So you're Hank. The one who lied on his resume. You're not even out of college, and you're already trying to cheat your way into a job. We don't hire people like you at Westbrook Holdings."Then her gaze traveled over me, and her tone changed. "Still, if you make it worth my while, maybe we can work something out. Meet me at Nocturne Lounge tonight. Keep me company over a few drinks, and I might find you something. Reception, maybe. Or a job on the cleaning staff."George's face ti

At the career fair, George took the stage to present his senior project. The large screen behind him displayed the AI model I spent three months developing.Wade sat in the front row, cheering and clapping until his palms turned red. In the reserved seating area, Julia applauded enthusiastically, looking pleased with herself. She turned to the university administrators and company representatives beside her. "This is exactly the kind of talent we need at Westbrook Holdings."Then she spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear. "I'd like to offer George more than our one opening in the management trainee program this year. With talent like his, there's no reason to make him wait. I want him working directly with our core R&D team, under my personal supervision."A murmur swept through the audience. Students who watched George with admiration now exchanged envious looks. A place on that team, with the VP herself taking an interest in his career, would put him well ahead of the ot

I walked into the auditorium as everyone stared. George recovered from his surprise, and his expression hardened. Then he noticed my plain shirt and laughed. "You've got some nerve showing up here, Hank! You couldn't even scrape together enough money for a suit. How'd you get in?"He turned to the audience. "In case you don't know him, this is Hank. Westbrook Holdings pulled his offer because he lied on his resume."This guy counts every dollar he spends on lunch, but somehow he got past the door. What's the deal, Hank? Sleeping with one of the women in management? Is that how you got in?"Whispers swept through the auditorium. Some people looked disgusted, while others stared openly or tried to hide their amusement.I watched George laugh at his own accusation. He was barely recognizable as the guy I met freshman year.He came from a small town and was on his own in a big city for the first time. He showed up in faded jeans with his belongings stuffed into a battered bag.H

George's grin froze. Then he pointed at me and let out a harsh laugh."Mr. Goodman? Seriously? Since when does he deserve that kind of respect?"He looked from Emily to me, raising his voice. "Well, look at you, Hank. I figured you were sleeping with some security guard to get in. Turns out you've got the CEO paying your way!"He turned to Julia, suddenly confident again. "Now it makes sense. That's why she kept blocking my job offer. She's looking out for her boyfriend!"Julia's eyes lit up. She wanted an opportunity to undermine Emily, and George just handed her one."So that's your type, Ms. Peterson. College boys young enough to be your son," Julia sneered. "And you're willing to interfere with hiring just to keep him happy? Let's see how the owner feels about that when he gets here. You might be the one looking for a job.""Kick Hank out! Investigate Ms. Peterson!" Wade shouted from the audience.George gave me a triumphant look. I walked past him without a word and

As George and Wade piled on the accusations, students and university officials began exchanging uneasy looks. Several turned to me with open suspicion."That's disgusting. Having money doesn't give him the right to push people around!""So that's how he runs a business. Makes everyone else do the work and takes whatever he wants.""I wondered how Hank built that algorithm when he was barely ever around. Now we know. He made George do it, then put his own name on it!"Julia straightened in her chair, quick to seize the opening."You're all hearing this, right? This is the owner of Westbrook Holdings. I found out he was bullying students and stealing their work. That's what this whole performance is about. He's trying to discredit me!"The crowd grew louder."Get him out of here! Don't let him graduate!" someone shouted."We don't want a bully on campus!" Others joined in until their shouts drowned out everything else.Martin hesitated, then approached me. "Hank, owning West

Curtis stepped out from behind Julia and hurried toward us."Mr. Goodman, Ms. Peterson, please. Ms. Schmidt told me to do it! She wanted George to get the job, so she made me flag Mr. Goodman's resume as fraudulent and pull his offer. She's a VP. I couldn't just refuse!"Julia was slumped in her seat, trying to stay out of sight. The moment Curtis blamed her, she shot to her feet."That's a lie, Curtis, and you know it!" Then she turned on George. "He's the one who started this! He came on to me and told me he had connections at the top. I believed him."She faced me again. "Mr. Goodman, he played me. I was an idiot to fall for him, but he lied to me, too!"George clenched his fists. "Don't put this on me, Julia! You're the one who pressured me into sleeping with you!"I watched them turn on each other, then glanced at Emily. She took a document from her briefcase. "That's enough. Legal and internal audit have been looking into both of you."She looked at Curtis. "You used your

A few days later, the university issued its disciplinary decisions, and the police released an update on their investigation.George was expelled for academic misconduct and making false accusations against another student. He would leave without a degree.Wade faced disciplinary action for spreading the accusations and knowingly backing George's lies. The findings went into his disciplinary record, and several major employers dropped him from consideration.Julia and Curtis faced criminal charges that could put them in prison for years. That weekend, I went back to the dorm to collect the last of my things. I was packing my books into a cardboard box when footsteps stopped outside the door.George stood in the doorway with a battered suitcase. He looked exhausted, his shoulders slumped and his clothes hanging loose. The arrogance was gone. He opened his mouth when he saw me, then looked away. For a long time, neither of us spoke. Finally, he tightened his grip on the suitcase h
