They also made a list of things for Thea to ask the goddess. And so when they called Thea in for the ritual, she came to a large circle of witches, meditating and chanting, holding incense and different magical talismans, smoke rising from each of them, crystals in front and behind them, their hands in various signs and shapes. They had painted symbols inside and throughout the circle and set up crystals and incense throughout. Gaia led Thea to the middle of the circle, where several video recorders and phones were set up to record the whole thing. A few voice recorders were set up as backups. “You remember the list?” Gaia said. Thea rolled her eyes. “Enough people have been assigned to go over it with me enough times. It’s in there.” Gaia pinched Thea’s cheek. “Queen Sass. Remember to repeat everything that is said while you’re there. It
“Our queen won’t be joining us here this morning or for the immediate future,” Liam said to the people in the packed war room the next morning. “I think we can all agree she needs some time off to grieve. She was past due for some R and R anyway. It gives us an opportunity to get a headstart. We have a lot of footage to go through. I’d like to have things thought out and options laid out for her to go through when she’s ready to return, take pressure off—" The door swung open, and, to everyone’s surprise, the woman in question charged into the room. Liam saw her trajectory coming directly at him at the front of the room, and he quickly moved out of the way. “Fuck yeah!” Valerian, Aaron, Rei, and Lamont called out together. Thea stopped when she reached the center of the room, faced the crowd head-on, and immediately took command. “Here’s how this will go,” she said, voice strong. “We are going to watch this first video. Then I will explain to you the purpose of this task force. The
Someone knocked on their bedroom door early to drop off their mourning clothes Doris had made for them. Thea’s mourning dress was black with metallic silver and a little bit of turquoise. Conri’s mark was on full display. Kai’s and Alaric’s were on partial display. Their clothes were plain black suits with silver highlights. They dressed. All of Delta team were waiting outside their rooms, waiting. So were the Valkyries and all one hundred of their pups. Thea took a deep breath, and they walked out to the clearing where they held pack events. It had been set up for Conri’s funeral. Everyone followed them, taking up positions. Thea took the seat in front of the giant construction of wood and kindling. Kai and Alaric sat on either side of her, then Xavier, Arella, Ophelia, and Cassandra, the triplets’ parents and Thea’s parents, then all hundred of their pups surrounding them. The Delta team sat in mourning behind the family. The Valkyries stood in formation. Some packs buried their
Eventually, Kai and Alaric took Thea to their room for the night. She headed to their bathroom, stripping as she went. They joined her in the shower, slowly approaching her. “Thank you for keeping people away from me today,” she said. “No problem, darling.” Kai kissed her forehead and ran his hands up and down her arms. “We’ll always do whatever you want us to, my love.” Alaric kissed his mark on her shoulder, slid his fingers around her hips, held firm, and pulled his chest tightly against her back. Kai leaned forward, pressing his chest into hers. Thea laid her head against Kai’s shoulder. “Do you feel like I ignored you today?” Thea mumbled. “No. Why do you say that?” Kai said. “Because we hardly touched all day.” “You had pups crawling over you all day,” Alaric said. “What’s the pain you’ve been feeling?” Thea sighed. “I don’t know.” “Did the pups hurt you?” Kai said, rubbing her arms. “No. It was already there.” “Why didn’t you say something?” Kai said. “It won’t
“Let’s go outside,” Thea said. “Con would want us to play in the sun while we can.” Lyall, their oldest, shot her a look she ignored. He shifted his gaze to his fathers and mind linked them. “While we can? What’s that about? Has she really lost hope?” Alaric sighed, and Kai inclined his head, motioning for Lyall to lead the way outside. The family played tag outside for a while. Thea reminded her empath pups to go easy on their brothers since they were stronger, faster, and could anticipate the others’ moves, so it wasn’t a fair fight. “It’s just a game after all,” Thea said. “You only use those advantages if you’re fighting a bad guy.” After a while, Thea sat in the grass and watched as the younger pups kept playing out in the field with Xavier. Lyall led a group of the two oldest Alpha pup litters toward their mother. The second oldest litter, Jude, Cyrus, Roderic, and Theodore, would be shifting soon and could help in taking over some of the responsibilities once they could
Eventually, the sun came up. Thea knew she would be expected to deal with things soon—the impending influx of refugees from the east coast, reassessing strategies after going over the footage and what they learned about their enemy, even the pack’s and everyone else’s mourning of Conri’s death and his funeral—but first, she needed to see her pups. When she thought about it, all she wanted to do was be with her pups and mates. Spend the time they had left together. “Ric? Kai?” “Yes, my love?” Alaric lay beside her, nose to nose, one leg tucked between hers, holding her hand against his chest. “What is it, darling?” Kai spooned her from behind, his hand on her hip, face buried in her hair at the back of her neck. “Can we see the pups now?” “Of course,” they said together. Kai wiped the tears off his cheeks as he sat up and sniffed. “I’ll tell Davie to tell Bronson to get everyone gathered in the giant playroom.” Bronson was one of vampire John’s human servants that decided to
Thea didn’t speak after that. No one did. “Liam,” she mind linked him five minutes later. “Yes, Luna?” “How long before we can be in the air?” “We can be on our way to the tarmac in ten minutes, Luna.” “Make it so.” “Yes, Luna.” She mind linked Lyall, Ryan, Aldric, and Derek. “Sons, if you want to say goodbye to anyone here, do it now. We’re leaving in ten minutes.” When it was time, Thea stood and looked at her cousin. Everyone in the room stood with her. “I’m sorry it has to be this way,” she said. “Please give our best to everyone.” She gave a nod to her uncle, turned, and left. All her people followed. Xavier, Liam, her father, and her sons stayed the closest to her. Halfway to the SUVs, she slowed down and looked behind her for her sons. She reached for them, and they hurried to her. Lyall and Ryan each took one of her arms in theirs. Aldric and Derek each wrapped an arm around her waist. “It almost looks like you’re walking down the high school hallways again,” Xavie
They didn’t stop running until they were back with Delta team, the Alpha pups, Alpha John Lyall, and Full Moon’s warriors. “What happened?” Liam said. “We felt—” “It’s all recorded,” Xavier said, still holding Thea, limp in his arms. “Save your recordings to the cloud. They couldn’t have relayed while we were down there. We can go over details when we reach minimum safe distance,” he called out. Everyone took out their phones and complied. Cam had grabbed Thea’s tactical shirt on the way out of the Underworld, so he retrieved her phone, took care of it, and handed it to Xavier. Xavier put it in his utility pocket that held Conri’s phone. With his super speed, he had taken it from Conri as he grabbed him to toss him away from Thea. He discreetly stopped the recording on it, saved it, made sure it was backed up to the cloud, and tucked it back inside the utility pocket while keeping a tight lid on any feelings he had. Thea was oblivious. Unblinking. Limp. Arms dangling at her side
