I'm waiting for someone to post a full concordance. I know I missed half of them. It's the kind of book that makes you want to have a wiki open on your phone while you read.
I'd be curious to hear from someone who read it without any prior '80s knowledge. Does the story hold up, or does it feel like it's written in code? I suspect the core emotional beats—friendship, loss, fear, loyalty—are strong enough to carry it. The references are the flavor, not the meal. But I have to admit, the flavor is what made it a five-star read for me. It was like visiting a place I hadn't been in 30 years and finding it both exactly the same and completely different.
A huge part of the book's charm is how it weaponizes nostalgia. Think less about subtle Easter eggs and more about a full-frontal assault of '80s touchstones. It's not just mentioning 'Thriller'; it's about the social panic around heavy metal lyrics and backward masking. References to Jane Fonda's workout videos aren't just background—they're tied to the protagonist's insecurities. The book dives deep into the era's specific anxieties, like satanic panic and stranger danger, which were all over the news at the time. Even the technology becomes a reference point: landline phones with coiled cords, the sacred ritual of making a mixtape, the agony of a busy signal. It's a meticulously crafted time capsule that makes the horror feel more real because the world feels so tangible and lived-in.
The book treats its female-centric pop culture with respect. The things Abby and Gretchen love—like teen romances, fashion magazines, and pop music—aren't dismissed as frivolous. They're treated as important parts of their emotional landscape. In a lot of stories, the male character's action movie references are treated seriously while the female character's interests are mocked. Not here. The power of their friendship, and ultimately their weapon against the demon, is built on the foundation of these 'frivolous' things. It's a quietly radical approach that validates traditionally feminine cultural spheres.
My favorite deep-cut reference was to the 'Dungeons & Dragons' cartoon. It's not just a throwaway line; it ties into the era's moral panic about the game being Satanic. Having the characters reference a sanitized, kid-friendly version of D&D while actual demonic stuff is happening is a wonderfully ironic touch. It highlights the gap between what adults were afraid of (a game) and what was actually threatening (a real spiritual malaise). The book is full of these smart juxtapositions where the pop culture artifact and the real-world theme comment on each other.

From Best Friends To Secret Lovers!!
Rory and Todd have been best friends for thirteen years. They thought they knew every secret between them but a playful dare unlocked a lifetime of hidden feelings.
It strips away the pretense and leaves only a burning, undeniable truth: They’re in love.
But now they have to battle the outside world that is desperate to keep them as ‘best friends’
"Let's be clear. While I stay here, no kissing, no hugging," Aiden Anderson said without breaking his gaze at Jessamine, his best friend since third grade. "You're my best friend... You're like a sister to me and my only family. I don't want to be reckless and lose you in the end."
"I was only teasing you, Aiden. I'm not losing you as well. You're the only man I trust besides my father," Jessamine assured him.
Jessamine turned her back on him, fighting the tears, unsure why her heart was disappointed. A part of her brain said she would rather die with heartache than admit to him that she wished there was more to their friendship, but her heart screamed something else.
She wanted to be reckless with him and gave her heart the freedom to love him more than best friend, but how could she admit to him she loved him when Aiden assured her he would disappear from her forever if they crossed the boundary of their friendship?
I made a mistake that could ruin me. I fell for a man I should’ve feared.
At sixteen, I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Gianni Rossetti. My best friend’s father.
A ruthless billionaire. A cold-blooded villain. A man twice my age, who could destroy me with a single look.
For years, I was nothing to him—a silly girl with a foolish crush. But I couldn’t forget those icy blue eyes, the way his presence made the world feel small and dangerous. By the time I was twenty-one, I knew I should’ve walked away, left my fantasies behind.
But then, one night, Gianni noticed me.
And my world turned upside down.
He didn’t just see me—he ‘claimed’ me. Every forbidden fantasy I’d ever had, he brought to life. He touched me, possessed me, made me feel things that shattered everything I thought I knew. With him, I wasn’t just a woman; I was ‘his’.
But the deeper I fall, the darker it gets. Gianni’s world is filled with secrets, shadows that whisper of violence and betrayal. His past is more than just a dark history—it’s a deadly curse that threatens to consume us both.
I knew he was dangerous, but I never imagined this. Now I’m trapped, caught in a web of desire and deceit, and the deeper I go, the harder it is to find my way out.
But the worst part? I’m not sure I want to escape.
Not if it means losing him.
Weeks before Ariana goes to uni, she has to move in with Dax, her brother's best friend who walked right out from her wet dreams. The wild night between them was never supposed to have happened, especially when he broke her heart right after. After she left for uni, she promised herself to completely forget Dax— unfortunately, she ends up taking a part of Dax along with her, one which she swore to keep hidden from everyone.
Four years later, she has moved on—- or so she thought, and is now in a healthy relationship, but after she almost lost her life from an unexpected attack, she is forced by her brother to move in with him once again for protection. Ariana doesn’t want Dax to come into her life again cause she knows he’d undoubtedly leave it shattered once again, but isn’t left with any choice.
Dax never stopped thinking about Ariana, even though he’s now engaged to a beautiful woman. He knows he’s supposed to stay away and not blur lines this time. Too bad he just couldn’t, and worst, he doesn’t want a mere taste this time, he wants to claim every inch of her: body, mind and soul. Even though the baggage he carries is enough to bury her underground, he’ll protect her from it and kill anyone who dares to lay a hand on her.
But Ari can’t let Dax into her life again, she’ll be stupid to, especially because she has a secret she has been hiding this whole time, not just from him, but from her older brother as well… one that looks just like Dax, which must remain a secret forever.

I had a best friend who was sweet as honey but only with her mouth.
Behind my back, she was a demon.
She stole my boyfriend, the underboss of the Chicago Outfit. Her excuse? She wanted to keep me away from the darkness and the blood, so she'd take the suffering in my place.
She pawned her wedding ring and fed her husband some story about a limited edition bag for me.
She skimmed from her husband's company accounts and pinned it on my male escort habit.
She was pregnant and still wanted thrills. So she went to a full-blown orgy with her husband's uncle and a group of his associates. That's how she ended up hemorrhaging.
But somehow it was my fault. I was the one who organized that kind of party, according to her.
And her story? She tried to stop me, so I pushed her down and made her lose the baby.
In the end, her husband sent me to a cartel hellhole in Mexico to atone for my sins.
There, her lover sold me to the red-light district. First came the addiction. Then the streets.
I served every man in their outfit, one after another. My body rotted. I died slow, sick, and alone.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the night my best friend miscarried because of her own filthy party.
Asha has had a rough go of life, seemingly always ending up in situations that are the opposite of her namesake. She breaks up with her ex a few months prior to halloween and the day of the dead and takes a vow of celibacy that, little does she know, a dead ex has used to bargain his way out of hell. He didn’t come back to become her angel, just emerged from the shadows to drink her light and hopefully turn out her halo. She prays for a guardian angel to hold her through these difficult times but her gift is a territorial demon.
