How Does 'A Dangerous Deal And The Girl Next Door' End?

Spoiler alert of sorts: I'm not going to write up a whole review of the finale of “A Dangerous Deal and the Girl Next Door” in case you want to avoid spoilers for it, but the big twist about the girl next door wasn’t that she was a bad guy, as it could have been. Rather, she was working to try to keep the main characters safe from getting hurt as well. We get to see bits of her past in the final act, and it makes sense of all of her previous behavior, like the way she would suddenly disappear for hours at a time.

I loved how the ‘deal’ got resolved in a completely underwhelming manner. Rather than a shoot out or a prolonged court case that wraps up in a bow, the two main characters realized that they had done enough to outsmart everyone. The final scene is of them sharing takeout on the fire escape of the girl’s apartment, laughing at the absurdity of it all. The ending is the kind of thing that grows on you, much like a favorite sweater. There’s no grand confession or sweeping romance, just a very real understanding of the mess that they’re in, and how they’re stuck with each other for better or for worse.

The end of this book was so great in destroying me that after all those chapters of suspense, the book just wraps up. The main character figures out he has to leave the whole situation, but the girl next door won’t let him go. To force his hand, she quietly shows him that his sacrifice would have hurt a lot more people than helped them. It was a really messy and imperfect resolution, but so very relatable. In the end it was just a really good book and I felt like I was right there with them through the whole story. We don’t get to decide who stays in our story.

This is a bittersweet ending to “A Dangerous Deal and the Girl Next Door”. The hero fights off the dealmakers in a very intense confrontation to finally reveal the rather dirty organization behind it all. Of course, it’s not all good for him and there are some sacrifices to be made. But thank goodness the girl next door turns out to be a nice heroine as well and plays a large part in uncovering the truth. There is an almost grueling confrontation between the two leads in the climax to determine if there is something more between them than just friendly dealings as neighbors in a crisis or if there is nothing between them. I rather like that it is left open at the end for them. The ending was quite sweet and tender in some scenes, as well as bittersweet in others. Very human all in all and I rather appreciated the way the story was handled.

My main takeaway is that the author manages to balance a good amount of action with a lot of quiet moments between the protagonist and his love interest (who is a daughter of one of his neighbors, a sort of girl next door). In one particularly nice scene, under the streetlights, they both admit that for them the other has been a safe harbor from the dangers of their world. The way the story is told, it doesn’t tie up every loose end for you; some of the supporting characters are left somewhat unknown, and the larger conspiracy is left unresolved as well. But that’s life, after all. Sometimes the greatest battles leave the most loose ends. I would like to go back to the end of the book and read it with my eyes open for all the clues that I must have missed.
