This book is available through Kindle Unlimited, so you will need an Amazon account that has a current Kindle Unlimited subscription. You can access the KU section of Amazon through the Amazon website, or by opening the Kindle app on your phone or tablet and accessing Amazon through that. I was really pleasantly surprised by Dripping Forbidden: 100 Ways to Make Yourself Wet, an urban fantasy book in which the protagonist’s fight to stay alive hinges around her struggle to master a wet and extremely dangerous magic in a forbidden city. Each of the “100 Ways” that the protagonist finds to increase her powers is cleverly set up to create high tension as she edges closer and closer to meeting her goals.

After purchasing my Kindle, I was super stoked to check out Kindle Unlimited – an awesome resource for huge readers like myself. So, in order to access the plethora of available titles, all you have to do is ensure your device is compatible. As for me, I have access to Kindle Unlimited through my Kindle e-reader as well as on my Fire tablets. If you have an iOS or Android device, you can download the Kindle app and gain access to Unlimited as well. That “Also enjoyed by” feature on book pages is a treasure trove of KU book discoveries. Scroll down past the customer reviews on the Amazon page of any KU book and you’ll find a carousel of other books that customers who bought or borrowed this book also enjoyed. Many of those other books will be KU titles — especially the indie-published books in genre categories. So there’s this whole web of interconnected stories by different authors and within different sub-genres too. I started with a paranormal romance. Six months later I was lost in a completely different sub-genre of fiction. All along the way I’d been following recommendation chains from one book to another. And it seems to me that the path to your next favorite book is already mapped out.

This was a major problem for me until I figured out that the problem was not access but discovery. Kindle Unlimited books are not all the Kindle Store books. Rather, they are a regularly changing selection of them. Thus, you might search for some very famous bestseller and not find it to borrow even though you have Kindle Unlimited. But that book would be available to you to borrow if you looked for KU books. So, go to the Amazon website and click on “Kindle Unlimited” in the “Departments” dropdown. Or, in the Kindle app on your phone or tablet, click on the KU tab, usually found on the left. All the books that are available to you to borrow as a KU subscriber are there. And yes, when you “buy” and then “return” a KU book, it instantly appears on all your other devices, including your actual Kindle e-readers, as long as you are logged into Amazon with the same account and you have the Kindle app installed on those devices.

You can choose to have it stream, or you can download it for later listening over Wi-Fi or even by using data (but be aware that data can eat into your allowance quickly).

Just a note, check your device storage if a download fails. My Kindle Touch storage fill up unexpectedly and new KU downloads would fail with a generic error message. Had to go into settings and manually remove old samples and finished books to free up space. Also, verify that your Kindle is registered to the same Amazon account as your KU subscription. I’ve had strange issues in the past where I was logged into a family member’s account from the app and couldn’t see my borrows. Otherwise, download function seems to work just fine as long as the basic conditions are met (active sub, correct account, sufficient storage, and current internet connection at time of download).

Has BN ever explained why it does not sell DRM-free EPUBs? Many smaller stores do this and it would solve so many problems. BN could still create an app to read on your BN devices but users could also choose to side-load other EPUB readers to read their BN books as well. My hunch is that the big publishers require BN to sell their ebooks with DRM. However, Amazon is able to use their own DRM because they are so large and thus, B&N uses Adobe DRM (as does pretty much every other retailer that sells ebooks with DRM). In short, it is not entirely B&N’s fault here. The problem lies with the publishers and their fear of digital piracy. Until that mentality changes, we are stuck in these silos.

Your archived items are also archived on your old device (even if you deleted them from your downloaded books list to make room). Now that you have a device with more storage, you might want to re-download some of these archived books. Make sure you’re viewing your library as ‘All’ or ‘Cloud’ and not just ‘Downloaded’. I discovered that I have a complete history of all my purchases over the last years, and can even re-download books I’ve purchased on sale years ago (I found three such books from 2017 that I had purchased but never read). Transferring to a new device became a fun library excavation.

As someone who loves Kindle Unlimited, I have to admit that it has a strange hold on me. It has conditioned me to read things that are free. Recently, I really wanted to read the sequel to a really highly anticipated fantasy novel. I waited months for it to come to KU. It never did. I finally ended up buying it. And oh, it was worth it. My advice? Don’t let the subscription be the tail that wags the reading dog. If you want to read ACOTAR, read it. Just read it. Find the most affordable way to get it to you in a reliable fashion (library holds, used paperback, sale on Kindle, etc). My money was better spent buying it to read immediately than waiting for some uncertain slot to open up in KU.
The ‘hype’ for good reasons. The convenience of reading ACOTAR immediately when I wanted to is so much more valuable to me than waiting for months to find out whether it will be added to KU or not, and for what amount of time. Go ahead and read it, without the KU substitution conundrum getting in the way of your reading time.

I wanted to be able to read on my phone, but I didn’t want to be tied to my Kindle hardware. The Kindle app for your iOS or Android phone or tablet works really well. You need to have an Amazon account to log in to the app and download books that you have previously purchased. For new books, you can download them to read on your phone as well. I have even added borrowed books (from friends and from the library) to my phone. I use Calibre to convert the book to a MOBI file and then I email it to my Kindle address.
One minor obstacle I faced was with books that had DRM. To get around this I occasionally use the ‘Unlock Ebook’ functionality within Epubor Ultimate (I’m very aware this is usually classed as copyright infringement, and thus use it sparingly). Otherwise it’s very easy to organize your books with tags. The ‘Send to Kindle’ functionality from desktop applications works very well for me with my academic PDFs, just check the supported file types on Amazon first.

I have found many people to misunderstand this function because Kindle books are not simple files that one can email to themselves. Kindle books are protected by Digital Rights Management and are meant to be read within Amazon’s eco-system. Therefore, to download books previously purchased, one simply registers a new device to their Amazon account and all of their prior purchases will download. I find it is like having a Netflix account. One does not transfer a movie from one TV to another. Instead, one simply logs into Netflix on the new TV. This also applies to books that have been borrowed from Prime Reading or from Kindle Unlimited. Those books will only download if one currently has an active membership.

The 10 device limit is only for downloading books to read offline in apps.
