Honestly, it totally depends on my mood and lifestyle. When I was commuting two hours a day, I craved massive series—the longer the better—because I wanted that world to live in for weeks. Now I have a toddler. My reading time is in 15-minute bursts. If a novel is over 400 pages, I often won't even start it because I know I'll forget the details between sessions. My engagement is highest with books that respect my current attention span. A novella can be just as absorbing as a trilogy if it's well-executed.

I used to think bigger was automatically better when it came to novels. A huge page count promised a deep, sprawling world, right? And for certain epics, that's still true.
