Been browsing a lot of submission guidelines lately while trying to get my own manuscript out there. Most of the big agents and publishers still point to that classic 80k to 100k words for adult fiction. That seems to be the sweet spot for printing costs and reader expectations. Sci-fi and fantasy often get a bit more leeway, edging up towards 120k or so because of world-building needs.

But honestly, I've seen debuts all over the map. I picked up a literary fiction book the other day that couldn't have been more than 65k, but it felt complete. It's a target, not a rule. The real question for me is whether the story justifies its length—I've read 300k epics that flew by and 70k books that dragged.

So much depends on genre conventions, honestly. Publishers often talk about a 70-80k word sweet spot, which typically translates to something between 250 and 350 pages in a mass-market paperback. That's your standard thriller or contemporary romance. But that's just the industry baseline, not necessarily what readers think of as 'average'. I find the perception is shifting. In fantasy and sci-fi, readers now expect doorstoppers. A 400-page novel in that space feels normal, maybe even on the shorter side. Historical fiction also tends to run longer. I'd argue the 'average' is more like 300-400 pages if you're accounting for reader expectations across all genres. Page count itself is a messy metric anyway—font size, margins, and trim size wildly change the number. My copy of 'The Name of the Wind' is over 660 pages, but the text isn't noticeably denser than a 400-page mystery. The industry might have one definition, but my bookshelf tells a different story. Feels like everything's getting longer, or maybe I just gravitate toward series that need more room to breathe.

There's also a big split between literary and commercial fiction. A lean 200-page literary novel can feel complete and weighty, while a 200-page genre novel might leave you wanting. It's less about the absolute number and more about the narrative density and whether the story feels properly told. I've read 150-page novellas that felt like full novels and 500-page epics that felt padded. So, 'average length' is almost a useless term without specifying the context—are we talking printing costs, reader time commitment, or narrative scope? Most discussions I see in reader groups settle around the 300-page mark as a mental benchmark, even if the reality on our shelves is far more varied.

Romance novels seem to operate on a different economy of words altogether. I notice most contemporary romances settle around 70-90k words, which feels intentional. They need enough space for the emotional arc and maybe a subplot or two, but readers often binge these in a weekend, so excessive length can work against the genre's forward momentum. Fantasy and historical fiction, on the other hand, balloon to 120k+ as a rule. The worldbuilding demands it. A detailed magic system or a meticulously researched period setting simply eats up pages. You can't establish the rules of a secondary world in 80k words and still have room for a plot. Sci-fi can go either way, with some hard SF titles rivaling fantasy for length due to technical explanation, while near-future thrillers might stick closer to a thriller's 90k pace. I've seen some cozy mysteries that barely crack 60k, which makes sense for a lighter, puzzle-focused read.

Genre expectations from publishers and reader habits heavily dictate this. A doorstopper epic signals a certain type of commitment to a fantasy reader, who might feel shortchanged by a 250-page novel. Meanwhile, a romance reader picking up a 600-page book might wonder if the central relationship will get bogged down in unnecessary external drama. The length becomes a silent promise about the depth of immersion and the pacing of the payoff. It's less about absolute quality and more about meeting the specific intent of readers who come to a genre with certain cravings.
