His Curvy Obsession (BWWM)

His Curvy Obsession (BWWM)

I'm not promising that though 😅. AN: I want you guys thoughts on this question, *sigh*. I'm conflicted, very conflicted on how to describe Nathaniel's character because in my book where I've written the manuscript of this book although, it's a very short story with maybe 28 chapters. I described Nathaniel as a dark lover in my written manuscript but with you guys now, I'm having second thoughts of changing him to cheesy, lovesick guy yet possessive though I've already changed him to that.

Abducting The Mafia Romance Author

Abducting The Mafia Romance Author

Instead there will be action, technology and a few gore scene, not to forget explicit language romance (precisely erotica) 9) This is my first story in mafia romance pn Goodnovel.com and it is a stand alone novel. Although it will be splitted further into parts. 10) All chapters are 1.5k - 2k words. 11) As a reader myself I don't like unnecessary dragging, thus the chapters will be fast paced with fully developed characters. 12) Check out my other mafia themed narration imbued with tech and action on (Webnovel) ~ Femme Fatale: The Queen Of Chess

Marked by the Hot Trillionaire Devil

Marked by the Hot Trillionaire Devil

😂 So please, let others know how much you like Alexa and Elliot. Also, slow posting? Don't worry about that, it's just that a major national examination is commencing which can get me in college 😳 and it might delay in me posting but as I said before, you don't have to worry about it. Do you think the coins for each chapter of our book is too much? Let me explain something to you, I provide more words in a chapter and that means longer reading. Goodnovel expects me to make it 1.5k or something but as a reader myself, shorter chapters annoy me. Because I want more info in a go. I hope you understand what I mean?

Luna Clary~Mated To The Taken Alpha

Luna Clary~Mated To The Taken Alpha

Hi there, First of all, I want to say thank you to all the readers for being along on this journey with Clary. I love this book and the characters feel so real to me, they really matter to me. I am an international student that has to juggle school, social life, and taking care of my three nephews; so if I don't post for a day or two, I hope there is some compassion and understanding. As for the length of the book, I saw that someone complained that it was too long. Have you seen other books on this app? I have a set plan and plot for this novel and will not rush it.

My Secret, My Bully, My Mates. Series

My Secret, My Bully, My Mates. Series

I wish I could respond to the comments here on GoodNovel, but that is not a feature that is easily accessible for authors on the desktop. This chapter is a little over 1500 words on my end so I believe it will become 2 when it updates. As I get closer tothe end of the book, I am going back to clarify things for continuity. If you catch something...And I know you will, this story is over 550k words when it was originally supposed to be like 80k TOTAL LOL. Please let me know on my Face. Book page under my author name. I get and check those messages, and respond, more regularly.

this is one of the best novels that I have read. yes there were typos and a few blurbs but even with that and a proper publisher it would be an outstanding buy for my bookshelf. I would recommend this to anyone. my mind was so connected to the characters that I cried a couple times too many, lol.

Behind Their Veneers

Behind Their Veneers

Right now, the book will be drafted on Goodnovel, but unfortunately, until it's signed, you guys won't be able to read it so, I'll try my very best to get it signed ASAP. Keep in mind; Underneath The Mistletoe is a novella so I intend to not have it dragged out at all. It's going to be short, precise and concise, hopefully, so I could move on to the next book. It's going to be a bit fast-paced but not too fast–paced to make it unrealistic. I'll be letting you guys know when UTM is officially out, so no worries. Thank you to all of my readers for sticking around and being patient enough for updates, no matter how annoyingly slow they are. It really really means a lot to me and I'll try my bes

The Forgotten - Book One of the Chronicles of Faynon

The Forgotten - Book One of the Chronicles of Faynon

Draynon nodded and opened the book. He leafed through the book until he found the chapter that he was looking for. “Here we go. Now this was roughly 120 years ago, or four generations. It’s not so much a history book, but written similar to a novel to make the facts easier for the reader to remember, rather than just bombarding them with endless seeming names and numbers.” He coughed once to clear his throat and began reading from the book.

Emperor Shadow

he chuckled in glee while revealing the notebook that had the world setting, the villains, and how it worked. “Depends. I have five scenarios at best which isn’t a lot considering that I can go more than 50 years in the novel in a single night.” He added. “But?” Smart and Smiley licked their dry lips. “These five are enough to torture them mentally for the whole night. Y’all will be the administrator.” They clapped, slow, to not attract attention. “Now, get comfortable. Prepare your mental.” “Yes sir!”

The Forsaken Luna

The Forsaken Luna

I like making my chapters at least 3k words because I pack a lot into one chapter and I am unable to do that with a word limit of 1500-2k (to keep my chapters affordable I need to keep them between that word count). This story is dragging on because I'm trying to figure out how to keep it at a good pace while also keeping the chapters short and sweet. I'm afraid I'll either make the story too fast or as I am making it now, too slow. I am unable to find a healthy balance and this story is starting to become more of a burden than a joy like it originally is supposed to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

I've always been fascinated by how size and shape change the way a story lands, and the difference between a 'book' and a 'novel' is one of those neat little distinctions that surprises people. A 'book' is the broad, packaging term — it refers to any physical or digital object that contains text (or images): collections of essays, textbooks, poetry collections, graphic novels, anthologies, and yes, novels. A 'novel' specifically means long-form prose fiction: a single continuous narrative that usually has a developed plot, characters, and themes. So every novel is a book, but not every book is a novel. In publishing and writing communities, length gets talked about in word counts. A handy rule of thumb used in many circles (especially speculative fiction) is: short stories under ~7,500 words, novelettes 7,500–17,500, novellas 17,500–40,000, and novels 40,000+ words. That last threshold is a technical low bar — mainstream publishers usually expect adult novels to be at least ~70,000 words for most genres, while YA often sits lower around 50–80k. Genre matters: romance and mystery can comfortably live in 50–90k, whereas epic fantasy often stretches 100k+ because of worldbuilding. If you prefer page estimates, a typical paperback page holds ~250–300 words, so a 90k-word novel is roughly 300–360 pages. Classics give good perspective: 'The Great Gatsby' is one of those slim novels at about 47k words, while 'Animal Farm' functions like a novella at roughly 29k, and epics such as 'Moby-Dick' or the combined 'The Lord of the Rings' clock in at many hundreds of thousands of words — totally different reading experiences shaped by length.

Length is about more than gatekeeping; it shapes pacing, character depth, and how complicated your plot can get. Shorter works force compression: sharper scenes, fewer subplots, and more implication. Longer novels let you breathe — multiple POVs, sprawling worldbuilding, and gradual character arcs are possible. That’s why a thriller at 70–90k can feel punchy and fast, while a sprawling fantasy at 120–200k can afford long-term payoff and atmosphere. For writers thinking commercially, traditional publishers and agents often have expectations tied to genre — sending a 40k fantasy novel to a house that expects 100k epics can hurt your chances even if the prose is great. On the flip side, the indie/self-publishing world is more forgiving: you can publish short novels or extremely long serials, and readers will vote with sales. Web serialization has produced monsters of length (some web novels pass a million words), which shows that audience appetite can vary wildly from the conservative industry norms.

My practical take? Treat length as a tool, not a rule. Pick the word count that your story honestly needs and then trim or expand with intention: cut scenes that exist only to show off craft, or add development where emotional beats land too quickly. Use genre conventions as guidelines if you want marketability, but let the story dictate pacing. Personally I love hopping between slim, intense novels and sprawling epics — each scratches a different itch. Whether you're reading for a weekend or settling in for a month-long immersion, the distinction between book and novel is less about a strict cutoff and more about what the format allows the storyteller to do, and that's endlessly fun to think about.
