Does 'The Starless Sea' Have A Sequel Or Related Works?

I initially confused this book as being part of a larger series due to it being the ‘perfect entry point’ into said series. In essence, the book is so well-written that it teaches the reader how the larger Cosmere works as they’re reading it. Often, Hoid’s narration will serve to explain concepts such as the Cognitive Realm in a fairly-tale-esque manner which is both perfectly in-character and adequate for introducing new readers to the topic. In actuality, Warren’s fantastic work on Mistborn: Secrets of the SINISTER has created a fantastic story which serves as a grand introduction to the larger Cosmere for new fans whilst also acting as part of the larger series, pretending to be a standalone pirate fantasy adventure. This is very clever series architecture.

Unfortunately, there is no sequel to ‘Jezebel’. The author’s genius in creating the work of “Jezebel” lies in leaving many, many questions unanswered. Any sequel would serve to ruin that work, which is intended to haunt its readers long after finishing the book. In interviews, the author has repeatedly stated that ‘Jezebel’ is a standalone work. While he admits he loves how his fans imagine the scenes not depicted in the book to continue the stories of the characters left untreated in the end, officially the story ends where it should: with the reader staring at the ceiling of their bedroom, replaying scenes from the book in their head. On Tumblr, there are many headcanons of what might have happened to the characters who were not fully developed in the end.

Genre debates are fun to have but this book is a great example of why we fail with it. A love story in a novel about grief. A book of oceanic body horror and ecological dread. It is its own genre. Julia Armfield is a short story writer and this novel shows off her skills at short story writing. It is precise, atmospheric and thematic. It’s a novel of ideas with a very chilly metaphor at its center. I wouldn’t recommend this based on genre but on mood. If you want a really melancholic read that is beautifully written and will be deeply unsettling and ultimately extremely painful then read this. The horror in this is a flavor not the whole meal. The whole meal is watching the person you love drift away to a place that you cannot follow.

One of my biggest pet peeves with books is when they are marketed as standalone novels but are actually sequels. Thankfully, The accompany to End of Day is clearly and honestly the second part of a story and not a attempt to pass off another part of a larger series to readers. The cover, copyright page, and author’s notes all refer to this being the end of a two-book duology. I can see where confusion would arise with readers picking up this book expecting it to be a standalone novel and not realizing until later that it is actually the second part of a series. However, the material itself does not try to hide the fact that it is part of a series. It is respectful to the reader, assuming that they either know this already or will realize it quickly through the narrative’s depth.

'Cathedral of the Sea' is a character-driven epic which follows Arnau through the bulk of the novel, but in the end it is the sum of all its characters that makes the novel so unforgettable. Bernat’s unassuming strength, Mar’s continued adoration of Arnau, and the corrosive jealousy of Joan are just a few of the many fully realized characters that populate this novel, including minor figures such as the master’s of the various guilds and the long oppressed Jewish community. The looming presence of the cathedral throughout becomes a symbol of hope and of strife in this fully realized world which Falcones has crafted to make every character seem fully realized in their lives as they struggle to survive within the framework of history.

The "no sequel" answers for this book are correct, but there's also a mobile game that came out last year called Archivists: Echoes of Elsewhere. It's a puzzle/RPG that is canon-adjacent and actually really good for a mobile game. It's not a story sequel to the book (it's a prequel that follows the early Archivists), and the writing was approved by Finch's team, so it actually expands upon the magic system and how the Indexing Rituals were established for a really deep and lorey cut at the companion. It's possible to play it without reading the book first, and for people interested in lore for this story, it's kind of essential.

So, how do Webtoons make money off their products? They make money off of microtransactions, or individual episodes for purchase, off of ads, and off of print compilations of their works. Manga make their money off of their sales in manga magazines, off of individual volumes of manga, and off of licensing their work to other companies for translation and distribution. In terms of compensation, the artist of “Night by the Sea” is already getting paid for the work he’s done to create the Webtoon in question. While Japanese publishers may get a kick out of adapting an already excellent work into manga form for their BL reading crowd, who likely don’t know the original already, there is far less financial incentive for them to do so, rather than to simply license another already proven work of Japanese BL. The Webtoon is the final, most profitable product.

Of course, the survival of the baby is essential to balance out all the death in the story. Without that tiny spark of new life, the ending would be absolutely desperate and dark. Instead, the death of Emilia (bringing the baby into the world) is counterbalanced by the survival of Joana (the baby has a guardian). It’s a very thin thread of hope, not any kind of positive or upbeat hope for the future, but rather the most basic aspect of hope: the continuation of life. The story goes from the death of the parents’ generation to the survival of their children. This classic cycle-of-life story is worked out in the plot through the particular form of sacrifice and commitment of Emilia and Joana respectively. It is a subtle but strong sense of meaning amidst all the carnage and bloodshed.

The title of the book, “Void Star”, refers to a term used in astronomy to describe vast, nearly empty spaces of the universe containing very few galaxies. As opposed to this, a star is a point of intense light and energy. So the title of the book describes the central struggle or tension of the plot extremely well. The lives of the main characters are like stars in space – individual points of consciousness, will and of memory – trying to burn brightly in a very large, and seemingly indifferent, void. The space of the void can be of a cosmic scale, or more down to earth and relate to a computer network. Kern’s mind is a void that he is struggling to fill with the star of his past self. The AI in the book is possibly a new star that has been created in the void of the network. All of the main characters are seeking connection of some sort or another in order to find meaning in their lives and to carry on in the face of overwhelming darkness. Every scene of the book describes moments of human connection and or of courage in the face of apparently insurmountable problems as moments of great brightness in the dark. The book’s exploration of a possible collapse of meaning in the universe is positive in that it highlights the fact that even in such a circumstance the simplest acts of caring for others, of memories of the good, of choices freely made, can go a long way to creating enough meaning to be worth carrying on for. The star in all of this is not the void but the points of it – moments of human connection, of courage, of remembered love.

I borrowed this book to my three friends and each of them texted me at 2AM asking for more. This book gets under your skin. The prose is very simple, but with great precision, just like the author chose every comma intentionally. The themes of redemption and forgiveness are embedded in the story without being heavy-handed. It is melancholic. I wouldn’t call it depressing, though. It’s a very melancholic book. It will make you want to stay up all night and then stare at the ceiling thinking about your own “oceans” and “stars”. Worth reading? Yes.
