I just finished reading 'The Beginning of Us' and the opening really surprised me. It kicks off with the two leads, Grayson and Chloe, already married but in a completely loveless, business-like arrangement. The prologue is this super tense scene at a charity gala where they're putting on a perfect public facade, but the narration makes it brutally clear they're basically strangers who can't stand each other. I thought it was another sweet college romance based on the cover, but nope, it throws you right into the deep end of a fractured marriage. The initial plot then jumps back five years to their first meeting in college, which is where the 'beginning' truly starts. Chloe is the scholarship student from the wrong side of the tracks, and Grayson is the legacy admit from a powerful family. Their first interaction is a clash—he bumps into her, spilling her books, and his apology is dripping with condescension. The early chapters are all about this push-pull, enemies-to-lovers tension in an academic setting, with a big class divide hanging over everything. It cleverly makes you wonder how on earth these two went from that spark to the ice-cold couple we saw in the prologue. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, knowing where they end up. It gives the whole 'meet-cute' a really bittersweet, almost ominous feel.
