Everyone talks about the fluffy domestic stuff, but I'm gonna go against the grain and say the best Magnus-centric fics explore his immortality as a form of trauma. Like, here's this guy who's watched everyone he's ever loved turn to dust, and then he meets Alec. Fics that don't just hand-wave that, but really dig into the fear—Magnus's terror of outliving Alec, Alec's quiet desperation to leave some kind of permanent mark on Magnus's endless existence—they hit different. They're less about grand demon battles and more about small moments: Alec learning a forgotten language Magnus used to speak, or Magnus finding Alec's old, mortal-age pension documents and just... staring at them. That weight gives the eventual fluff so much more meaning.
I also have a soft spot for the 'warlock Alec' trope, but only when it's done with consequence. Not the power-fantasy stuff, but stories where his magic is unstable or tied to his emotions, and Magnus has to guide him through a world that suddenly looks utterly different. It flips their dynamic in a fascinating way, making Alec the novice in Magnus's world for once.

Post-canon fix-its where they actually communicate. So much of the later show drama felt forced. I love fics where, after a fight, they sit down and talk it out like the centuries-old being and the diplomat they are, instead of storming off. It’s not a flashy trope, but it’s satisfying in a way the show often wasn’t. That, and any story where Alec gets to be a bit of a disaster—clumsy with Magnus’s potions, baffled by mundane technology—while Magnus looks on, utterly smitten.

Honestly, I just want them to be happy and a little boring sometimes? The 'established relationship solving a mystery' trope is my comfort food. Give me Shadowhunter Alec and High Warlock Magnus dealing with some weird magical disturbance in Brooklyn, bickering about case notes over Chinese takeout, and using their combined, vastly different skill sets to fix it. It showcases why they work so well as partners, beyond just the romance.
There's also something about 'Alec meeting Magnus's old friends' that always delivers. Whether it's a centuries-old vampire who tries to intimidate Alec and fails spectacularly, or Catarina teasing Magnus about his new 'responsible' boyfriend, it grounds Magnus's fantastical past in their very present relationship. Those stories make the world feel lived-in and big, even when the plot is small.

Sadie: Unrequited love is a b*tch, isn't it? I have been in love with Alec for as long as I can remember, but he never felt the same way. To him, I was just his sister's annoying best friend. I was sure he'd be my mate, but the moon goddess played a cruel joke on me because Alec found his mate, and it wasn't me. I thought nothing could be worse than seeing the man you're in love with happy with someone else. I was wrong. It took just one night for my life to change. Everyone turned against me. I was shamed, shunned, and tortured for a crime I didn't commit. As if that wasn't enough, Alec banished me, a fate that was worse than death. With a broken heart and soul, I left, vowing never to cross paths with him again.
Alec: With a curse hanging over my pack and time running out, I had my hands full. I thought nothing could be more difficult than trying to lift a f*cking curse but I was wrong. It wasn't as hard as trying to convince a woman you hurt deeply to forgive you. Sadie despises me and wants nothing to do with me or my pack. Not after the sh*t we put her through. I want a chance at redemption, but will she ever forgive me? Will she ever let go of the pain I put her through?
Turns out the woman I cruelly mistreated is not only my second chance mate but also the key to breaking the curse.
*** Cat shifter + three Alphas ***
Another year, another heat season, and another attempt to escape, but this time- for good. The secret I carry is almost as dark, sick, and twisted as my hatred for Alphas.
Running from my problems, I never thought I'd come face to face with my greatest fear in the form of three men. Three extremely dominant, possessive, and obsessive men. Three Alphas.
I've been warned- none of them is willing to give up or step aside. Each of them refuses to stop until they "claim" me.
Warning: This reverse harem book contains A LOT of mature content, triggering topics and sensitive themes. (Kinks/ BDSM/ strong language, etc.)
BOOK ONE IN THE ALPHAS SERIES.
The series:
Caught by the Alphas - completed
Claimed by the Alphas
Cursed, mated, and in for the fight of their lives…
Warlock Nate Hawthorne just wants a cup of coffee. Is that too much to ask? Apparently. Because instead of precious caffeine, all he gets is cursed by a pack of werewolves who want to use him for his magic. Now the only way to fix the damage is a mate bond to a grumpy and oh-so-sexy alpha in the rival pack, who happens to hate him. This is so not how he wanted to start his day.
Ian Armitage never intended to take Nate as his mate. The Hawthorne family can’t be trusted. Ian knows that better than anyone. The fact that he’s lusted after the way-too-gorgeous man for years? Totally irrelevant. Ian’s just doing what is necessary to protect his pack. This whole mating arrangement has nothing to do with love and never will. That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.
Nate and Ian will have to work together if they have any hope of staving off the pack’s enemies and averting disaster. That’s assuming they can stop arguing (and keep their hands off each other) long enough to save the day…
The Alpha’s Warlock is an explicit M/M paranormal romance featuring a snarky warlock, a brooding alpha werewolf, knotting, enchanted socks (long story), and a guaranteed happily ever after. This series does not contain mpreg.

“Why does everyone assume I need a tragic backstory to justify what I am?” Adrian said, strolling slowly toward me like he had all the time in the world.
His eyes locked on mine as he continued, “Oh no, honey. It isn't because mummy dearest died giving birth to me. Or because dear old dad was too busy to tuck me in at night"
He stopped when he was directly in front of me. So close that his tall frame was towering intimidatingly over me.
I lifted my chin stubbornly to look him in the eye, refusing to cower.
He smirked at that, his hand going to swipe a stray strand of hair from my face.
“Some of us,” he murmured, “are not broken.”
His eyes darkened.
“Some of us are just simply… evil.”

I was dragged to the execution block in chains, accused of being a monster the world had erased.
Then the Alpha's wolf claimed me as mate and forced him to halt the execution.
In a world where hybrids were hunted to extinction, I was the last mistake left alive. The last thing Lucien Dreadmoor wanted was his mate being the single weapon that could completely wipe out wolves from existence. The bond tied us together anyway, trapping me in his keep, his rules, his control.
He called it protection.
I called it a cage.

The Alpha wants to break the bond.

The sheer number of 'Domestic Fluff' fics out there tells you something about the audience's hunger. We watched these two battle demons and Shadowhunter politics, so of course we want to see them bicker over interior decor in the loft or who gets to pick the takeout. It's a natural progression. The 'There Was Only One Bed' trope gets a warlock-and-Shadowhunter twist too—forced proximity in a safehouse after a mission gone wrong, with Magnus trying to maintain his elegant composure while Alec is all practical, prickly tension. It's a classic for a reason.
One trend I keep clicking on is 'Alec Lightwood, Head of the Institute' fics. They explore the weight of duty versus desire in a way the show sometimes glossed over. Seeing Magnus navigate the formal, stressful world of Idris through Alec's ascension offers fantastic political world-building and soft moments of support when Alec's shoulders slump after a long day.
Then there's the darker, more speculative stuff: 'What if Magnus never got his magic back?' or 'Alec as a vampire.' These alternate power dynamics or supernatural shifts dig into their core identities, asking if their love is conditional on what they can do for each other. It's angstier, but the payoff in devotion fics is huge.
Oh, this is my jam. Honestly, most of my finds come from diving headfirst into Archive of Our Own (AO3) and using the filters religiously. You've got to lock down the 'Alec Lightwood/Magnus Bane' relationship tag, sort by kudos or bookmarks, and then just start scrolling. The 'post-canon fix-it' and 'established relationship' tags are treasure troves. There's this one called 'A Consuming Fire' that absolutely ruined me—it deals with Magnus's father issues in a way the show only hinted at. A lot of the best writers have migrated there from FF.net, honestly.
I'd also recommend checking out Tumblr, weirdly enough. A lot of authors will link their masterlists, and you can find threads dedicated to recs. It's less organized, but sometimes you stumble on a WIP (work-in-progress) that's updated weekly and has a fantastic comment-section community. Just be prepared to lose a whole weekend.
